My head canon was the healer running from the FOE while scribbling for the future, Bravely Default style... This games are not beginner friendly! But I bought all three cuz I love challenge. First of all, a lot of us really like that there isn't a whole bunch of story with active characters interrupting your dungeon crawling. The adventure that you experience *is* the narrative. Believe it or not, there are people who prefer the classic mode over the story mode in Untold. That said, I think that sometimes the first stratum feels like an introduction and whatever story there is doesn't get started until after that. I was just browsing for EO V footage since it's new and I want to see a bit of it, and I found someone's video of a boss fight with level 25 characters (so not that far in). There was a ton of story stuff both before and after the fight with characters talking to each other and reacting to the boss. The player had a choice to respond to a question, and a guest character joined the party for the fight. I didn't read much and just skimmed through most of the footage to get an impression, but there seems to be a lot going on there. I think you might be underestimating how much story you would find if you did keep playing.

Etrian odyssey's story has really never been about the characters you control but everything happening around them, and exploring monster infested labyrinths uncovering secrets

The motivation for the etrian has always been more about the spirit of adventure and the mystery aspects rather than story. There is an amazing story but it is late into the game.

This is one of my top V games ever. Hollow Knight, Terraria, Etrian Odyssey V are some of the best games ever.

It's all about dungeon crawling, it does not need a lot of reading, it needs good class system and difficulty spikes. If after the first stratum you are done, you really don't get a genre that is all about pushing forward and developing your party. Btw this time we have really different healing possibilities, and two tank options, with many ways to have a character be half of each.

The game is not likely to go down in price.... most atlas games stay at their retail price.... or go up. So to anyone that wants it, buy it whenever you want

@@sgrantle I'd be carefull if I were you. Like OP said, these games usually go up in price, not down. When I look up alot of my more niche Atlus games, I see them beeing sold at about double the original price. For example, I bought Stella Glow for about 40 bucks. Now a new copy of the game costs 99.90€ on amazon. Granted, I live in the EU and that could play a part in it, since prints are probably more scarce than in america, but I think this will only get worse, now that the 3DS era is slowly comming to an end.

I get you probably were introduced to this series through the Untold games, but it's good to know that the original series contained very little story. The story mode was only added in both Untold games to "remake" EO1 and 2.

Unless you LOVE Etrian Odyssey, then it's a throwback all the way to the brutal difficulty of the very first (non-untold) game and it's worth the tag price. That said, Atlus games RARELY fall in price, they usually go UP in price as they become more scarce. So better to get it now if you actually want it.

Umatsu Obossa true. I got lucky and got Etrian 4 though for $10 on the eshop. Was also my introduction to the series as a whole.

Umatsu Obossa Personally I think EO3 have the perfect balance of the originals difficulty while having the overworld exploration gameplay similar to EO4. Also the appeal of EO is using your imagination with creating your own adventure and party unlike the untold games which have a generic story that is ether hit or miss. EO5 is a must have for veteran of the franchise.

Paradoxical Nexus Both EOU 1 and 2 have remade EO 1 and 2 in classic mode but it felt easier compare to the originals, maybe because they were my early EO games just like how the first souls game you play is the hardest one.

Frank Tse I actually did have much difficulty in DS. My only hard fights were gargoyles, seath, nito, and Gwen. Bed of Chaos is on a different level.

Apricot Games like these do have an amazingly long timer just because of the design but I do feel like the map-making is something they really should market more. These are the types of games that adding a simplified mode could possibly spoil things. I'm kinda torn on the idea but a simplified mode might not be the right fit here.

I was disappointed by the marketing lead-up to this release. They did mini-trailers highlighting each class, but that isn't important. What makes Etrian stand out is drawing your own map. There's nothing else like it, and they should really play that up because it's the most obvious differentiating feature for the series. They should have done a really in-depth video about exploration and the cartography options, maybe talking about how you might use the tools in different situations. Certain kinds of people (like me) would instantly recognize that this is a game for them when seeing that stuff, so they should put it front and center.

I got two reasons to buy it: 1. Its ETRAIN ODYSSEY. (who needs a big ass story? It was never the main point of the series) 2. It has a class called DRAGOON, the name alone makes my Final Fantasy Fan-Heart go crazy!

Except for this time Dragoon is not a jumping glass cannon with a lance. It's a freaking tank with shield and gun. Sadly their MO requires summon slots and my Necro takes priority,

Yuubi Timberwolf you probably will like Granblue Fantasy, (unless you don't like gacha games) the mc can change class and the game has a class with the Red Mage outfit AND the Dragoon class. it has the same composer and artist that worked in many FF games but the game is MUCH more grindy than EO itself, I mean, it is basically a turn-based lite-MMO for mobile/browser with a gacha

I loved it for the necromancer they useful and the actual summoning are the best (ok other summoning exist for other class I know) their promotion are even better but I remember I basically rely on poison in the beginning (really screwed me up on when foe resist poison)

These Otrian Odyssey games are similar to the Dark Souls games in that there is a minimal story and the focus is on your own adventure as you progress through what are hard games (with no hand holding).

also like dark souls youre made to believe youre mostly on your own and have to constantly put your life on the line , with FOEs and whatnot , especially with the older games and 5,... The narrative can sometimes send chills .

I knew it. I knew that someone will understand me. I LOVE Persona Q gameplay a lot, so I tried to play EO4 and EO5, but 5-6 hours into the game, I always find myself demotivated by a pretty severe lack of purpose. People dont come to EO for the story, yes. But for me, PQ nailed it. It has that grindy gameplay (which were pretty exhausting if you are not familiar), but the story kept me going.

I still have to beat IV (which is my first Etrian Odyssey game actually), but I really like the look of the characters in this game a lot more. I know it's a small thing, but to me it's a big deal. There also looks to be a much greater variety of classes, and the races thing is interesting too. Honestly thinking of just dropping IV and getting this one.

Dude, the fun just starts after the first stratum. These games demand quite an investment from the player. If you quit after one stratum, you're not willing to invest. The payoff gets better and better once you activate and improve more skills. I think either you're missing out or you're just not interested. Imagine the fun you'd have nuking FOEs once a masurao can equip and attack with four katanas or your necromancer wreaking havoc with an army of wraiths. One thing you didn't even point out is the soundtrack, which for a lot of players is one of the main reasons to keep coming back to EO.

Quick tip the first foe in this game is toxapiede its the one he put a pic on screen ya dont fight it u can fight the next foe just not toxapiede it poisons so even if you made it to like lv 15 it still has a chance of one shotting you

I got it for $25 XD but yeah I’m loving it and lowkey making a head cannon, having all my characters crazy like my warlock and my Masurao being insane, my botanist being pod head, my harbinger being crazy about her hair color (because I’m always changing it) and having my necromancer just looking and everyone like “what did I get myself into...”

Well to each their own. I really like Etrian 5 way more than persona q. The game focuses more of world building for me than an actual story. Makes it feel like your exploring a world and not just saying. "Why is tidus alive after all these years" (yes I know what's actually happened to him but when you start the game that's the question at hand.) Eh I'll get persona Q2. But I'm not as excited for it as I was when this one was announced for the west.

I tried the demo and was admittedly disappointed... Don’t get me wrong I love dungeon rpg’s but... Let’s just say the “rpg” of the dungeon was... lacking... IE... no story (which was my favorite part of EO) And besides that... (which is something I could honestly get over) The map drawing portion drove me nuts. No I don’t hate drawing maps, on the contrary, it’s my favorite part of the series and I love it to bits. My problem with it in this game however is that I feel like it changed the interface of the map so much that it was no longer enjoyable for me. And wether you liked the new interface or not, that one was the dealbreaker for me. And I know what you’re already going to say “but you do know that you can turn on auto map right...? Duh.” Yes I’m aware of the auto map feature. And it may be a solution for someone who HATES map making, for someone like me who got into the series BECAUSE of the feature, not doing the map at all kinda defeats part of the purpose of the game. The other redemption would be a good storyline but in this game it’s simply not an option. It’s simply a dungeon crawler for the sake of being a dungeon crawler and I’m sorry but I’m really not into it all that much. And added, that he’s right about the random difficulty spike, even at the very beginning of the game. It made it very difficult to play and even level up at all as many of the monsters where simply one shot killing my teammates at every turn, forcing me to either keep healing or return to town WAY too often. My point being, (and this is my opinion of course) I’m not getting this one. Sorry. I just wasn’t a big fan of the new changes, and the last thing you want in a new game is for it to start annoying you right off the bat. (Unless you’re intentionally playing a rage game.) Of course from the many comments it’s clear to see that many DID like the new changes/or had mixed feelings on it. And I’m not putting anyone down for liking the game. In fact, I’m sure it offers up a nice change of pace to new and old comers alike, not filling up your time with immense amounts of dialogue or map making and focusing on just the dungeon crawling aspect of the game for those who like it (which is very unique and refreshing in its own right) however it’s simply not enough for me and compared to the previous installations, I’d have to give it, 🌟🌟🌟/5 on the overall game. With that being said, I really did enjoy the adventure logs and the side quests really where on par with high expectations, considering it’s predecessor. And if dungeon crawling, hard bosses, and fantastic (dare I say some of the best in the series) side quests is what you’re all about, then I actually couldn’t recommend this game more to ya. Just keep in mind what I’ve said above and maybe try the demo for yourself if you’re not sure. You’ll get a real feel for the game there. And depending on your tastes, you might actually not be disappointed. Yes it’s not really like the previous installations, but different doesn’t always mean bad. Like I said, it could actually be a refreshing change of pace if you’re willing to give it a chance.

Mango 3DS Game Question: So I was wondering.... I started playing SMT Apocalypse and I liked it. Lost my save and was wondering, better to start that over or get this game, another SMT, Persona, or other one I haven't mentioned to start dungeon crawling? (The ones I mentioned are labeled DC type games right?) Thanks ahead of time to anyone willing to help with their personal advice. Cool vid by the way.

If you liked SMT Apocalypse, I would first recommend checking out the original SMT4. Soul Hackers is also good for that. If you're looking specifically for a dungeon crawler, Etrian Odyssey games are about the best you're gonna find, Persona Q if you liked Persona 3 or 4. If you just like exploring and don't care much about traditional RPG's, you can try a Mystery Dungeon game, and if you just want a dark RPG game I like Devil Summoner. Also, check out Fire Emblem: Shadows of Valentia. Highly underrated.

the big difference between the etrian odyssey games and persona q is that persona q was WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY easier than the etrian odyssey games. it felt significantly easier to level grind in persona q as opposed to etrian odyssey, easier to fight battles in persona q, everything felt easier in persona q. by comparison, i am playing etrian odyssey 4. i'm taking a lot longer to grind and defeat bosses when compared to persona q.

Depending on the way you're playing and your team they might have to go on the front (well i prefer using a fencer since their dodging build make them untouchable)
