I thought Etsy was for all hand created items until I started seeing items in there that were not hand created like selling embellishment type items that you can buy in the store. When did they allow this? Not back when I was in Etsy seller and I will no longer partake in Etsy because of their pricing policy and crazy amount of questions I've got to answer when I'm listing an item for sale

As a buyer, it is so frustrating to know there are probably thousands of sellers I will never see because they are small. I wish we could search by newest stores but all my search results seem to contain are ads, huge sellers and people who pay to be seen. I can’t afford the time to scroll through crap in the hope of possibly stumbling onto something I might want.
@BeeBee-gi2zr6 күн бұрын
Unfortunately unless you pay to be seen you simply aren't seen....they penalise sellers for everything... I've left a comment above regarding how they put reserves on sellers accounts preventing them from accessing 50% of their money until the tracking updates on the system, this left me in a ridiculous situation at Christmas time of not being able to afford to send out international orders....they do this with no warning & with no reason whatsoever....it lasts I think for three months, they then have the ability to put an account straight back on reserve afterwards! I now have had to tell international customers that for the foreseeable I can no longer sell to them
@jordanwhite54706 күн бұрын
Searching for Newest Stores would cause you to miss a lot of hardworking artists who have put in YEARS of time and effort. Not that people shouldn't be encouraged to start, but I personally would find more credibility and respect for hard working Sellers that have withstood that test of time.

I stopped selling on Etsy several years ago because it just wasn’t profitable for my art type anymore. That kerfuffle with the Indonesian boat furniture lady was the beginning of the end. They had a chance to stay true to the business model of being for artists and handmade and they failed. Now, with “imported” items and print on demand, I think the last few handmade artists such as yourself are finally calling it quits. They should just change their name to Etsy Express since it reflects their actual business model.

@johngriffiths48743 күн бұрын
Yes indeed, I am a retired guy who sold wood-turned art beginning with the pandemic, sold about as much as I wanted to create as a hobbyist and was happy, did not need to buy their advertising. Then Etsy began their star seller program and I was in it, until they made claims of late shipping (once a year earlier when a customer changed her order and was in agreement) and my orders dropped to zero while their fees increased. And star seller status required about four times the sales I was willing to produce. So I fired Etsy.
@KathyMyersMinkBears9 күн бұрын
What excellent advice. I am now retired but I successfully sold my art from 1988 to retirement in 2021. Your advice to “take control of your own sales” is exactly what I did. Yes, I had an Etsy shop from the time of their creation to my retirement but I used my Etsy Shop more like “an advertisement” to direct people to my Blog and Website where I sold my custom work directly to customers. So I had my own website, blog, I used Social Media, I did local shows, I got involved with art communities in person and online, I wrote articles for magazines in my field which lead to my work being featured in several books. My work sold worldwide. So, in my opinion your advice to take control of your own sales is what made my business success for over 30 wonderful magical years 😊❤🎉

@KathyMyersMinkBears6 күн бұрын
@@carollynt actually I paid Etsy monthly to be on their platform. I sold items from my Etsy shop and Etsy got their cut but if someone requested a personalized item in the early days of Etsy their platform did not accommodate for personalized items like they do now. I didn’t need Etsy to advance my business which I started in 1988 and Etsy did not start until 2005 and I already had a successful business. I was a very early seller on Etsy and it was a very difficult platform in the beginning. So to reply to your objection to how I ran my business I did play by the Etsy rules of that early time period and I am very proud to have run a successful business as an artist. One reason I retired is because unfortunately there are people online that can be so unkind and judgmental. 💕

Hi Emily, really appreciated your thoughts on what’s happened to Etsy over the last couple of years. It’s very similar to what happened to eBay some years ago and we small creators only have one option really that makes any sense and that is to leave. I quit eBay when they allowed mass production to overwhelm everything and prices for art plummeted. For awhile I thought I might be able to make it work on Etsy but recently it has dried up completely. So now I think I’m going to take your advice to heart and actually close my Etsy shop and focus on selling to people who know and care about my art. Thanks for producing such a thoughtful and careful video. Best of luck with everything you are doing, Diane x

I completely agree with what you have said. I started selling, a few years back, from the UK, bespoke necklaces made from ancient artifacts, ancient coins and fossils amongst my own artwork in oils and acrylics. All pieces and artwork were one-off and unique. I also sold artifacts, ancient coins and fossils as individual collectors items. At first I was amazed at how much I was selling. Then, after some time, almost overnight it slowed right down and about two months ago sales stopped. Needless to say I dumped Etsy. As I am retired I did not choose to find an alternative way of selling my items. I feel sorry for all those sellers who are in the same position and rely on platforms like Etsy for their income - Greg

This is a sad tale. So disappointing that artists and their works are being devalued by greedy internet marketplaces, AI, and theft. Part of your story reminded me of an annual fall festival here in central Indiana. Years ago, original art and products were the primary offering. We’d walk and browse booth after booth and always come home with a bag or two (or three 😊) of original, handmade items (tole-painted wood, carpets, ornaments, etc). In the last 5 or 6 years most all of the products offered have been mass-produced, imported from China (says so right on the tag). What was once an awesome fall festival experience, a great venue for artists and creatives, has degraded into a glorified flea market of cheap, machine made products or “art” imported from the Far East. These things are priced so low true artisans can’t compete, so they no longer attend the events. So, we no longer attend either. Always hopeful that one day this will change back to its origins, but it likely won’t be anytime soon. I’m sorry to hear about the challenges you’ve had, but you’re so talented and creative, that I’m confident you’ll continue to find a course with success. BTW, I hope one day you have a paint getaway here in the US. I’d love to attend.

Ai steals, so do original artist. Think artist back then stole ideas and even traced. I do miss craft fairs though, every craft fair my family went to had mass produced stuff and sometimes people selling same stuff. Don't think people want to put in the work anymore on crafts. I also left Etsy! I started my hand stamped jewelry shop after getting laid off from my job because i was "more focused on being a mom" in 2015. I had a $45k year my first few years, and then came China. My original jewelry designs were copied and mass produced, and you can still buy them on AliExpress, amazon, etc. I also had to have a few awkward talks with people who were reselling, and also people just flat out copying (bound to happen, unfortunately). Etsy support never helped. Last year, i was getting like one sale a month 😂 everyone bought laser engravers, so no one wants the "imperfect" hand stamping that costs more. I couldn't compete, and it was exhausting trying to. I'm also sad about what the website has turned into. It used to be wonderful. Heres to new beginnings that we can feel at peace with! 🎉 and having our freedom in our art!

I'm an artist and have had Etsy shops but I experienced the same frustrations that you talked about so I no longer sell on Etsy. I'm enrolled in your Watercolor Mastery course and I'm just glad I found you! You're a wonderful painter and teacher!

As a buyer etsy has always been my go to for gifts. I love how unique everything is. As much as like it I will not support a business that treats their people like this

Good decision, did the same a couple of years ago because the writing was definitely on the wall -- one can hope something else may emerge but, as you said, we need to find ways to remain in control of what we are making. I'm focusing on in person sales/shows, I don't do social media so that's the best option for me -- it's a shame but, as you said, we know enough not to 'fund' what Etsy has become with our creative energies. Best wishes in your new endeavors.

I've sold my art on Etsy for over 12 years and have done moderately well. I sell horse and western art so my customer base is probably smaller than most sellers. So far I'm sticking with them but I agree that they've become very commercial and need to take notice of videos like this one or they'll just be another Amazon. But..... maybe that's what they're motive is.

You are so creative! These painting are just awesome. I'm so very sorry for the bad experiences...as well as happy you started out on top. But I can't say as I don't blame you for dropping them, after all the issues you stated. Etsy seems to more and more just keep slitting they're own throat!

Your art is amazingly beautiful ♥️ I had part of my shop (junk journals) cloned on Etsy by another person in their shop. Obviously the journals in their shop didn’t exist …They were charging 5 times the amount I was. I told Etsy they did nothing …didn’t even bother responding to me.

I was about to open a store on Etsy, but seeing the future that was approaching and that for artists it would be unpromising, I backed out... Etsy in the end will be a bazaar of everything for 1 dollar. they will know... Thank youuuu!!!

When I opened my 1st Etsy shop, the fee was 3%, and ONLY on your product; shipping $$ were not part of that fee. You weren't told that your shipping price was too high (although it was the actual price, not even counting packaging & time handling), you weren't coerced into having "sales" that really weren't, just to keep up, there weren't as many clueless people selling items for less than the cost of their materials , etc, etc.

Find a small Art Gallery to sell your work or even a Craft Market. Some of these charge only 10%. Even a Farmers Market would do well especially at the holidays. You're VERY TALENTED! Don't give up.

I’m a Watercolor Mastery member and am very glad that you are continuing to teach! I will probably never sell anything, I don’t know that I have a desire to, but I enjoy creating for my sled and friends and family. Thanks for taking me on the wonderful watercolor journey!

Same, I had 3 great years 2019-2022 for my custom art 25-60k a year to a point I was considering to quit my day job. In some point 2023 they flagged my shop, hold 75% of my income which was almost 2k a month because I was considered “high risk” not having fast shipping. My work takes 3-4 months to finish and every customer knows about it. At this point I only accept deposit listing on Etsy and direct them to my own website.

I've found Etsy frustrating to purchase on because all the listings seem to be corporations or the same products from "different" sellers. I've purchased a lot of art from artists directly and your advise is spot on. There's also something nice about buying art from someone you can connect with or have a story behind rather than on the art version of Amazon. Also there are more and more technical tools that support shops on websites at a low cost - especially on wordpress.
