In today's Europa Universalis IV (EU4) video we will be uniting the Holy Roman Empire, the HRE of Germany in 1444. With such a strong nation at the start date it's no doubt they'll be a force to be reckoned with throughout the game, but we may run into some other interesting, slightly more Roman tags along the way..

I think the culture converstions in europe were done by the HRE and not the other nations I can see that the polish culture is an accpected culture in the HRE so instead of converting the province to their main germanic group, the HRE decided to culture convert by using the the accpected culture in the adjection province which gives an extra 25% culture conversion cost reduction. Same for the lombard, francien and hungarian. Also the French had no reason to culture convert provinces with the same culture group since it's accpected culture anyways, the HRE don't have infinite culture accpectance slots so they culture convert using the accpected culture.

14:54 The Toledo War (1835-36), also known as the Michigan-Ohio War or the Ohio-Michigan War, was an almost bloodless boundary dispute between the U.S. state of Ohio and the adjoining territory of Michigan over what is now known as the Toledo Strip. The single military confrontation of the "war" ended with a report of shots being fired into the air, incurring no casualties. The only blood spilled was the non-fatal stabbing of a law enforcement officer. During the summer of 1836, the United States Congress proposed a compromise whereby Michigan gave up its claim to the strip in exchange for its statehood and the remaining three-quarters of the Upper Peninsula. The northern region's mineral wealth later became an economic asset to Michigan, but at the time the compromise was considered a poor deal for the new state, and voters in a statehood convention in September soundly rejected it. But in December, facing a dire financial crisis and pressure from Congress and President Andrew Jackson, the Michigan government called another convention (called the "Frostbitten Convention"), which accepted the compromise, resolving the Toledo War.

My mom is a yooper from the UP and I visit there from time to time because she still owns my deceased grandma's house up there. Yoopers basically do their own thing in the UP and they make a point of doing everything the opposite of what the state government of Michigan wants. Its sort of a joke for Yoopers to stick it to the state government in Lansing. The UP would probably prefer to be its own state but it can't for the obvious problems of low population and low economic status. If anyone ever gets to go I would highly recommend my mom's old hometown of Lake Linden. Its very isolated and very Americana with old turn of the century buildings. A very small town with lots of local shops and a LOT of local history as it used to be a major copper mining town. You can actually still see the ruins of massive copper mines, mining equipment, and factories scattered all over the place slowly being reclaimed by nature. Its pretty cool because Lake Linden is a modern town with what is left of the old late 19th/early 20th century either being repurposed, preserved, or left to be slowly engulfed with nature. They have a massive parade every 4th of July to celebrate Independence Day with the local fire department, sheriff, and veterans all participating in it and fireworks in the evening but I would highly recommend going in the autumn times around October because that's when all the leaves change color so you get a mosaic of yellows, browns, reds, and greens all over the area because its mostly all still forest. There is also little noise and light pollution so clear starry nights most nights and almost all the pollution from the mining town area has been cleaned up or fixed naturally by nature so the air up there is super fresh

I KNOW ABOUT THE UP SITUATION! I’m up here for college and have already discovered how much it effects the environment even if it seems rather minor! It’s kind of strange to think about how it’s a ‘limbo’ of who even wants the peninsula as there is basically nobody up here compared to the lower peninsula.

The culture conversion was done by the hre. The ai will convert to neighboring accepted cultures. I once saw the ottomans convert half of persia to khaleeji and russia converted the other half to uzbek

Michigan received the UP (upper peninsula) as a "consolation prize" as agreement for letting Ohio keep Toledo (long story about bad map making and political ambitions). Michigan actually really really loves the Upper Peninsula (mostly as a nice vacation destination) and the Upper Peninsula is rich in mineral resources as well.

Michigander here. Like someone said, the US gov handed the UP over as a result of the 'Toledo War' between Michigan and Ohio, which was really just a really riled up dispute where a couple over zealous Michiganders injured themselves in. Ohio got to keep Toledo, an established city with great connections, and Michigan got the UP, which was basically a frontier that was very unexplored. The UP used to be part of Wisconsin Territory, so they lost the most in the dispute despite never even being a part of it. In the long run, Michigan probably got the better deal due to the nice amounts of iron and copper later found in the UP, as well as a ton of lumber and later tourism. Toledo just hasn't been doing so well for quite some time, but that's the case with many major midwest cities really. I do know there is a small independence idea in the UP to become the state of Superior, named after the lake, but I don't know how prominent that really is and honestly it's not that good of an idea given how tiny of a population they are.

It's just how the game works, I united it with console commands so who knows
