Thank you for this! I’m up on Vashon island in Washington and needed some schooling badly on just this topic for personal guidance! What a lovely farm you have and great teaching skills!

Hi @Flower Hill Farm I'm betting they get bigger than that😉 Gotta watch the freezing winter time temps though some varieties are tougher than others.

So cool! I hope it worked out well for you guys this summer with tons of regrowth. On another video I saw, they shared that due to the plant having a "lignotuber" they can resprout even when cut right to the ground. I had one 15' tree freeze kill this past winter and then resprought right from the ground! It was a happy accident. :) Additionally, I think the leaves of some species can be allelopathic.

Thank you so much for the video, I've been waiting for a flower farmer to put one out about eucalyptus. Wasn't sure it would be hardy enough in my zone 8a but after this I will plant my seedlings out with the rest of my flowers. Great job Tony!! Keep them coming.

I love this plant, I like this video I found it useful. I have a euc. " silver dollar" in the yard, (approx. 10 feet tall, 3 years old) and I would love to make little ones and put it all over the garden. Is it possible to make baby euc. from cuttings or what is the best way of doing it other than seeds?

Awesome video! I assumed the euc needed to be in a greenhouse. Could I ask what temps they withstand in your area?
@BareMtnFarm
@BareMtnFarm 3 жыл бұрын
Hi @mk wats Our Zone 8B temps typically bottom out most winters at about 20F. We have upon occasion had winter freeze events taking us near zero. We have found that Silver Gum and Silver Drop get damaged severely but don't die outright if the plant is healthy. Dwarf Blue Spiral or Blue Florist typically perish at those temps. Most years our Eucalyptus make it through winter just fine. I'd think that folks in colder climes Zones 6-7 or lower would be advised to have them in a tunnel with some supplemental heat to ensure winter survival.

Hi, Great info! Thanks for the video. Curious how your silver drop "hedge" is coming along at this point (almost time for your 2023 trim). I'm in zone 7 and probably borderline of whether this could work or not without frost protection, but I have been trying to identify things that could work both as a cut and as a hedge row for our near constant wind/breezes here. I'm very intrigued by your wanted the silver drop to create a hedge for you.
@BareMtnFarm
@BareMtnFarm Жыл бұрын
Within one season we were able to harvest again. The hedge needs to be coppiced again this year as the eucalyptus is now over 10 ft.

Thanks for the great video! Did you say you put down the wood chips and then add the "ecualyptus mulch" or did you put the chopped euc before the wood chips?
@BareMtnFarm
@BareMtnFarm 3 жыл бұрын
Hi @Linda Bradley Yeah I was a little confusing here. We are chop and dropping smaller branches and leaves around the plants then top dressing with about 3/4" or so of rotted wood chips. So in essence it will be a mix of both.

1 year later ( will look to see ) is there a follow up on this. What have you learned? In in Vegas and about to start my eucalyptus seed. I have over 10 varieties, mostly for the floral business. I would like to know how you spaced them, how many feet you grow and harvest ...I have a quarter of an acre URBAN home lot...with most of my area to plant is in front over 2k sq ft and West facing. Any hints or info is most welcome! Thank you Be Blessed.

Thank you for sharing this video with us. I'm a bit confused on why you did not harvest more from the plants last fall/early winter. Does leaving all the stems provide extra protection to the plant through your winter? Or are you trying to develop a super strong plant/root system before harvesting heavily? I too did not think euc would survive your winter, are these in a heat sink area or any special siting?

I have same question about harvesting. And damn, it seems I trimmed too early...:(
@BareMtnFarm
@BareMtnFarm 3 жыл бұрын
Hi @Kathy Yearwood and @Angelina Survilaite We could have harvested more but due to the downsizing of our business due to the pandemic we just didn't have the market to sell more. A side affect is that it did allow the plants to grow a little stronger. The siting of the plants isn't in a warm micro climate. For us our winters are generally not freezing cold for extended periods. Our last Arctic event that killed all our Eucalyptus was back in 2009. So we in a sense are always playing roulette but the percentages are in our favor.

Hey thank you for the great video :D. What spacing did you use initally to plant them. I did hesitate to plant mine out for the winter last year so i kept them potted in 15cm pots in a frostfree Greenhouse. I sowed mine December 19 an im in zone 7a/b
@BareMtnFarm
@BareMtnFarm 3 жыл бұрын
Hi @Maximilian Martin The initial planting in these beds was 12" intra-row and 18" between rows. This was done intentionally tight with the thought that as the plants grew we would thin these out eventually to around 24-30" between plants over the years as more larger plants gain dominance. Not sure if we would do it this way again. Our process in our next planting was single row 24" spacing with a thinning to 36" after the first coppicing in year 3. One thing about eucalyptus is that prolonged freezing temps will severely damage or kill most species. 10 years ago we had an arctic freezing event that lasted about 10 days. The temps at night dropped to near zero and daytime temps never hit 30F. By five days in the ground had frozen at least 10" deep and when the event was over we had lost all our eucalyptus

Hello, Do you cut stems any other times of the year to market?
@DeborahLandry

I planted a silver drop from seed 4 years ago and it is 20 ft tall I want to copious it. The trunk is huge. Can you send me a picture of what your tree looks like this year. I am trying to decide what Hight I want to cut it. There are almost no low branches. I feel like if I cut at 24 in. I might just kill it. I had lots of failures from seed and feel this one is my baby.
@BareMtnFarm
@BareMtnFarm 2 жыл бұрын
Hi @Deborah Landry Admittedly making a coppice tree cut is a big shock to the tree and with a Eucalyptus it forces it to sprout around the cut. Given the is your only tree you might try making pruning that lowers the tree height but leaves some of the lowest branches in place to give the tree a source of food as it regrows.

We have never done that. We understand that it is difficult to root. We love experiments, so go for it. Probably a lot of starts to get a couple of plants. Good luck and thank you for watching.
