Here in Colorado, RTD began replacing old OBI V's with these Gilligs all the way back in 2007. All of their fleet now consists of Gillig 29' and 40' buses and our 60' NFI Xcelsiors. I've always wanted to get behind the wheel of these things and drive, so having these POV videos is amazing and they're so much fun to watch. Thank you.

I’ve noticed RTD is starting to replace the 2006-07 models with newer ones. That’s too bad, I like the older models.
@UahUahUah2 жыл бұрын
@@Mrcharles. Yeah, most of the original 5000 series models from their first 2007 order have been retired. the 5200 series is still going strong, for now. I believe those may go away now that RTD is taking delivery of 6580 and up.

Well hopefully I’ll get to ride the old Gilligs before they retire.

Very nice! I’m sure many enjoy riding along! Three years ago, we converted a 29’ 2009 into a camper, with the same ISL engine, but with an Allison B400R transmission. 30k miles later, we visited all states from Maine to Florida to California. I absolutely love driving it. As the Europeans never cease to point out, Gillig’s design is stuck in the 1980s but I’d pick this model over any other any day of the week.

Man, that's an old bus. I was driving one similar to that one, but it had steps at the front, and this bus was the "if you can drive this one, you cab drive any of them." Bus as a support and maintenance crew member that bus was a load of fun to drive... but when the power steering would kick out mid right turn, things got very interesting

Another great drive, my friend. Just curious: Is there a way the drivers can turn those annoying exhaust fans off? This particular bus's engine sounded GREAT, save those exhaust fans. I know what I have noticed on OUR buses is that when these fans are running, the buses tend to run real sluggish. But, sounds like you didn't have that problem here. :-D
@ItalianMamba4003 жыл бұрын
I noticed that once the temp gets to 220 It gets sluggish

In my experience, some vehicles have the fan running all the time, which may be an indication of a fault. This seems to be the case for this vehicle and it did not affect performance, so I indicated on the driver's log and continued driving. Quite loud, eh?
@gsm199113 жыл бұрын
That noise is the radiator fan. Once temperatures reach around 210F, it turns on. Sometimes the relay would go bad and the fan would be stuck on. There was a way you could manually turn it on to stay on all the time. I would do that on really hot days but it would slow me down alot. They use a lot more power as they are hydraulically driven and again, really slow the bus down and make a lot of noise. Where I use to work (CDTA), the 2014 models and up switched to electric fans. They cooled just as well and much more quiet when they turned on.

Great video. I noticed, at some road junktions there is stop sign for every direction. Then who's got the priority? Here in Hungary the is no crossing like these.
@eugew233 жыл бұрын
People traveling straight have priority. If there is a vehicle to my left or to my right, whoever arrives and stops first has priority. If the arrival and stop is simultaneous for all vehicles involved, then the vehicle to the right gets priority. A bit confusing, eh?

What´s the purpose of this high idle mode you switch on before doing the walkaround?
@eugew233 жыл бұрын
High idle is for building air pressure quickly after the air reserves have been drained. It is also good to have on when accessories such as the climate control are on full blast, as well as if you need to idle for more than 5 minutes at a time. It was not necessary for me to do that in the video but it is a force of habit.
