5 years later… I enjoy watching multiplayer batters with commentary. Chris is such a natural color commentator. Johan is good with behind the scenes details. There is no secret that there is a great chemistry when they go full Scottish. 1 1 1 for Trin is unfair. I wonder if these players know how good he is so he tends to get hit early and often. Bratyn turns out to be a stellar player with a very quiet dominance. His dip is so amazing that players don’t even make him fight for land, or get mad when he breaks alliances. Daniel and Groogy are a bit underrated. I won’t put the SS tier with KJ or Starnan, but they are really good players. D9 and Groog also make some exciting moves. Anyways, thanks for the entertainment, historical and alt historical. ❤️

So far so good. Just from personal experience, I'm part of a large group (30ish players) and often we host games with 15-20 players. We have EXCELLENT players mechanically. They can perform very well and DDRJake reminds me of these players. But often, the best players tend to be players who can read the interplayer diplomacy best. Strong mechanics don't win over good diplomats. So, in general, games like this never turn out as expected. Players that aren't too aggressive, but cunning, tend to do the best and often the best players, are very strong diplomats.

AI Ming eventually almost always falls apart. First it's a small amount of rebels, but when the civil war comes around, many tiny Chinese nations form off from Ming and the Ottomans surpass them as the #1 great power of the world. India and Japan are usually a bloodbath in the game, because all the clans want to unite Japan and in India tiny nations don't last long and there is the expanding Bahmanis, Vijayanagars, Delhis, Bengals and Timurids all fighting for either Hindu or Sunni India, or their own empires. Although, the Far East Siberian Horde nations get pretty rowdy too I find, like Manchu, Jianzhou, Korea [Which usually gets invaded by the hordes] and Yeren.

Oh and I just want to share my recent pain in regards to Steam achievements (I love challenges and I love playing as minor nations): Played Kuba up until almost 1650. Rank 5 great power. Wanted Kuban Cigars achievement. Had to delete the save (was no point continuing). What happened? Well. Colonized and expanded towards the Ivory Coast to get Printing Press and Renaissance (and Colonialism). Got Feudalism through the Kilwa/Mutapa area (colonizing). Took loans to embrace them, cause I had about 7 tech while even my primitive neighbours had around 10, needed it ASAP. So where is the problem? .... I'll give you the short answer: *CORRUPTION*. Don't you EVER forget that corruption impedes research. And don't *EVER* go bankrupt trying to undo 20 corruption. Game over.

The "A Sun God" achievement was actually far easier when I did it. Had to play the last 150 years without saving though, as the save got corrupted. RIP PC fans. But yeah, if anyone goes for Kuban Cigars, I recommend 2 things: Don't do Innovative as your 2nd idea. For the love of god do Economic. Or if you refuse to do that, do Administrative. Alternatively, don't reform your government early at all - but I really think you should. Secondly, reload for a start where it isn't a stalemate. I wasted over 10 years for an opportunity to start expanding after starting the game, because the possible wars were so unfavourable. Don't wait. You need to expand ASAP and preserve as many monarch points as possible for research before the new institutions arrive, while also using some for development in the east (for quickly spreading Feudalism). Oh and almost forgot, do NOT release a country out of Kongo's northwestern areas, or have Kongo guaranteed by a powerful AI. You NEED those areas to link up with Ivory coast for institution spreading, and you need to develop them. Get Fernando Po or the other island (Edit AND LET a European power have the other island!!). Get Cameroon. Develop adjacent provinces. Develop Fernando Po/the other one. It's not lost if you get a roadblock in Northern Kongo, if you get a port on the western coast of africa and colonize Cameroon, but you should definitely try to have that link. Might save you tons of money/monarch points/time. I did eventually get a great province on the western coast of Kongo because the ones i took it from had time to develop it, but I had to expand into Benin and beyond to get enough adjacent developement to be able to embrace the new institutions. Sorry for wall of text! I wanted to help anyone that's after the same achievement, but by the time I realized I should post this elsewhere, I'd already written half an essay x) Copy paste at will! Good luck in your games folks!

Additional things: - Building forts may not be worth it at all. You'll also eventually conquer fort provinces. - If you can take any provinces from the Mutapa region after getting a land "bridge" through colonizing (I know at once place it's only 1 province apart), DO IT - Don't colonize near Kilwa (or any other big power on that coast) unless they ALREADY HAVE 3 NATIONS RIVALED. They'll immediately rival you if they can. Go for alliance instead. VS Mutapa/other, or ally a strong Mutapa/other to help with the central african minors, though that's doubtfully really needed. - I did not try to convert to another religion. (Aired the potential of the "Hoarder" achievement) - I have no idea how to proceed once you have a stable tech and is a great power. Probably get at least one major European ally, and rush to conquer the tobacco provinces by conquest later with the nationalism CB, and develop them like crazy and boost your production. - I got colonialism as first idea. I don't know if there's any other idea that's better to start with. I don't think so. I used Harsh Treatment. Attacking natives before dispatching army elsewhere. - If you have the possibility to become a protectorate, DO IT, but (!) save it for when you have a lot of monarch points save up/the right time. Keep good relations, and dont place any areas under "areas of interest". Once you become a protectorate, you'll lose all your allies. Some might not want to re-ally. Being a protectorate will lower the cost of monarch points needed for techs by 20%. Your economy will suffer a lot, with trade power being halved. Edit: And once you've "broken free" that nation will probably never accept you again as protectorate, whether you're low tech enough or not. It's basically a one-time 20% save off 3 techs. - again, avoid corruption AT ALL COSTS - except bankruptcy. You'll probably be way too weak and spread out to deal with that, and you'll be in for a good 50 years of trouble, if not more.

You need to add a buff for western nations that start in the new world. I made custom Byelorussian steppe nomads with an immortal 6 6 6 ruler, but I was still drowning in tech penalties. Good thing I had good points and I started in the untapped California trade node. Those ducats were amazing.

no hate, but i don't like their style of commentating. in comparison to jakes style it doesn't feel as structured. why don't they use the diplomatic map view like twitch chat wanted them to use (only showing the diplo view of ming which isn't even controlled by a player). also - it may be a medical condition - but hearing johan constantly taking air through his nose makes it hard to watch for me. well, i guess i'm just spoiled from jake commentating.
