My main concern is, whoever is chosen must first and foremost be a staunch Europeanist. Ideally, someone who regardless of political affiliation, once in office will care for the EU's interests as whole (even though this is "easier said than done" because member-states have more influence than others and will always bicker among themselves).

As a romanian, id say Iohannis as leader of the comission would be quite a shock. Here he is very unpopular because he was generaly a hands off president. Romanian here: Believe me, externally Klaus Iohannis is praised by nearly the entire western world but when it comes to internal politics, he only manages to continuously hit historic lows for his public trust. His lack of transparency (a core european value) when it comes to presidential spending practices and also lack of communication / general inactivity as head of state since his last election in 2019 only made him more and more unpopular. ALSO, even though during his presidency, Romania didn t have a hard right gov., current polls show that the next parliament is set to have about more than a fifth of its seats taken by right wing, eurosceptic, parties, with Klaus Iohannis being seen as one of the main causes of this rise. (due to his unpopularity, opposition has generally taken a more anti western rhetoric). Remember, in 2015, Romania had no explicitly right wing party in parliament, now in 2024, it not only has, but that is also set to grow. Please, if you care about the EU, as much as it pains me to say, do not even think, (let alone trust) Iohannis for the EC President position. - and that applies to NATO also

The party with the greatest power remains the same during the years that Romania has been a country (PSD), the same disguised and corrupt communists, with a majority in the government, forming a coalition to govern, Iohannis cannot do much either. As a romanian, I can tell that Iohannis is HATED in Romania. He is very unpopular here because of his arrogance. The last time he was in an interview in press was in like 2018.

Romanian here.... There will be a lot of anti-Iohannis comments from USR-voters but just ignore them. The Romanian constitution doesn't give the president the prerogatives that they imagine it does. Iohannis did a great job considering he wields very little power in the state. Romanians in general lack even the most fundamendal understanding of the consititutional order of the state. They show up to vote in large number for the presidential elections but then forget to vote in the parliamentary elections because they "don't trust the parliament". But the parliament votes on who the prime minister is and the prime-minister has all the power in Romania. When von der Leyern was chosen to her position, the political situation was much calmer. It was easier to find a candidate that most could get behind. Now on the other hand, people are incredibly polarized. Even people supporting EU integration hate each other for reasons that don't even matter in the EU-context, so they let these more petty reasons to get in the way. But why I do believe Leyern should be changed, is because having someone for more than two terms in that position is too long. I think Iohannis should become the head of NATO, he is more suited to that since it doesn't even demand that much popular support. Draghi might be old but work as a stopgap before things calm down a bit.

Beg to differ. Plenkovic will not refuse, given even half a chance. But you are right. Now that he made the new ruling coalition with the worst extreme right catholibans, he has a moral obligation to forget his EU ambitions, stay on as the Croatian PM and hold in check the evil he unleashed.

@@branko4033 That is why I voted for HDZ. You cannot run the campaign only on ''opposition bad'' without saying what would you do better. Zoki is a clown who would not be able to do half as good. We saw what he was capable of while he was prime minister, we saw the chaos and aftermath. He already ruined Croatian image as a president when he decided to side with Orban on Ukraine issue. Calling Germans Swabians as a President of Country is bad representation of our people and saying we should turn back to EU and turn to our people, Serbs and Bosnian Muslims. No thank you.

Romanian here. So, anti-Iohannis comments will come from ldiots who don't even understand how their own country works.

I hope Iohannis' career in politics ends with his presidency. He failed, willingly, to accomplish a single point he campaigned on. This final mandate he spent travelling with luxury airplanes rented with the presidential budget and made the president's travelling expenses a secret when the media found out. Now a villa owned by the state is being renovated with millions of euros of public funds and we think it's for him after his presidency is over because the renovations were kinda hidden away and because the romanian state awards past romanian presidents with a house to live in after their mandates are over. "as the president of Romania, Klaus is known for his stable leadership", you mean completely ignoring everything going on inside his country while flying luxury private jets on public funds? He doesn't give a crap about anything other than partying with public money.

Omg Iohanis first place? He is the laziest politician Romania has ever known. If he has a golf ⛳️ match and there is a crisis he is responding next week. Oh, and he travels only with luxury planes and the destination has to be a vacation or he is not going.
