It's name in some cases translates to "mellow sounding"

cause of the mouthpiece and horn itself. some horns you cant do a deep tone. these euphoniums are larger than normal in width cause the one I used in band in HS was slimmer than these

Certified Pinoy the one you used in high school was most likely a baritone. Both are tenor brass horns and have same (or at least verrrry similar range) but have different tone qualities. The euphonium is large bore which allows for a darker, richer, more mellow tone and also allows you to play louder without being overwhelmed by a very brassy sound
