It's worth noting Euphoria isn't a show about drug addiction as the start implies. Yes, that is one element, but it's A LOT more. I covers a whole range of topics in mental health, relationships, sexuality, discrimination, growing up, how times have changed, and is perhaps best described as a (darker) look at the human condition. Drugs is just one brick in the wall. Also, I would argue the show doesn't "focus on Rue", yes she is a main character absolutely, but I think the only extra importance she carries beyond the other main characters is that she is the narrator. Intro's each tell the story of a different character very explicitly, and Rue does not feature in them bar her own.
@nanagyambibi7426

I absolutely agree, I was talking to a friend saying high school looks alot different since my day(graduated in 2009). She responded that alot has changed with phones and social media and the things kids are exposed too today, they lose their innocence alot earlier than we did. That this really hit me.
@bigshivv
@bigshivv 4 жыл бұрын
Well it’s shown through her eyes, thus it focuses on her.
@lsedge7280
@lsedge7280 4 жыл бұрын
@@bigshivv Nature documentaries are shown through the cameraman's eyes. And are narrated by a narrator (which could be said cameraman, plausibly) From the viewpoint of the narrator, or the general human expert viewpoint of biologists etc. Typically, nature documentaries focus on the plants and animals (other than humans) which happen to also be in shot. Something being narrated by someone, or being shown "through their eyes" puts that person in a unique position within the media, but does not necessarily mean it focuses on them.
@bigshivv
@bigshivv 4 жыл бұрын
Lj Spike They aren’t really shown through the cameraman’s eyes. They are supposed to get certain shots to make the doc. Not really a good comparison.
@lsedge7280
@lsedge7280 4 жыл бұрын
@@bigshivv I would argue it does actually. It'd be somewhat weird to narrate Euphoria from an out-of-universe perspective (and would be jarring), however there is A LOT of stories and worldbuilding we need to be given in quite a condensed form for the story to make complete sense (we are getting an entire person's childhood every episode before hitting the title sequence more-or-less). By providing them from the "perspective" of Rue, it avoids the jarring aspect of an out-of-universe narrator, and keeps us absorbed in the fiction. It could arguably have been more-or-less any other character providing narrations though. I suppose nate would probably be the one most odd choice of the main characters to narrate given he's a sort of antagonist. Using the pre-title-card narrated chunks as an example though, they are in a regard comparable to a documentary. It's teaching us a lot of information we may be unfamiliar with in a condensed and direct fashion.

I think this show means so much to teens because it gives a more real approach to how the lives of teens actually are. Our lives isn’t highschool musical. I can 100% say I’ve had experiences like they’ve shown in euphoria. I like that it’s raw and doesn’t filter anything. It’s real. It’s beautiful. It’s honest. I especially love Jules special episode, I related to it so much and it was very emotional.

tbh, the show's cinematography is more effective than the writing for me as a vehicle for story telling. It is the those imaginaries other than dialogue that builds those characters for me, and it feels much more intimate. That being said, the writing of this show is still phenomenal

Euphoria proves that even if a show deals with difficult subjects, it doesn't mean that everything has to be ugly or greyscale. in fact, there's a lot of beauty in the sadness, too. I wish shows like Riverdale or Sabrina would take note, as they're so visually unappealing for no reason.
