Hello! I had a bunch of audio problems with this video. I tried to fix it as best I could, but apologies in advance if it sounds off in some parts ! Since Jenna will be an executive producer for S2, are you hoping they do anything differently?? I think she’s getting rid of the love triangle which I am ALL for

I defend the Love Triangle for one reason and one reason only: it *DOESN'T* make sense. It reminded me of THE BIG LEBOWSKI, which is a story trying to build itself around a character who doesn't care, and who so heavily disrupts the effort by being himself that the movie eventually gives up. That's what Wednesday was to the Love Triangle: a character so heavily *uninterested* in it that she pretty much defuses the entire construct until it falls apart and becomes nothing. And she does it by basically being herself. It also yielded some great moments like the LEGALLY BLONDE reveal and the exploitation of Eugene which only made *him* more likeable. I think the show accidentally deconstructed the _Riverdale_ phenomenon by *trying* to be _Riverdale_ but by using the wrong character. They can only get away with it this one time though. Personally, I want S2 to be Wednesday getting a summer job at a very corporate fast food place where her misanthropy and color sense really clash with the environment. Then the Nevermore drama tries to follow her there but the corporate environment disrupts *that* as well. Basically, if each season involves Wednesday in a different setting and tone where she does *not* fit in, you could really have a dynamite series that never gets old.

The points you made about Crackstone are interesting, because what happened to him was the exact same thing that happened to Belos, aka Phillip Wittebane, in "The Owl House". He was a witchhunter who hated witches and didn't stop trying to destroy them until he was destroyed. However, in order to succeed in his plan, he not only used magic but corrupted his own humanity in order to carry out his plans. In the end, he had transformed into a devilish monster, but was so deep in his delusions that he couldn't see his true nature. I could see the same thing happening to Crackstone. It's just that he wasn't as developed as Belos that it feels weird. Also, I have a possible theory that Laurel has internalized misogyny from her family, which is why she resurrects Crackstone. She believes that she needs a man's help to complete her mission. Again, though, it feels awkward because it isn't well-developed.

@@Theomite That's also one possibility, at least in the case of Crackstone. For Phillip, though, I think it's more than that. There's a scene during the finale where he tries to convince Luz to save him. It sounds like he's going to use the "you'll be no better than me" line, but instead, he says that she'll be no better than "those witches". Most villains acknowledge that they're bad people, but he simply cannot.

There were only a few problems I had with this show. 1. Wednesday does not need a love interest. 2. Wednesday love her family and would love for them to be accused of murder. 3. Wednesday would love that the one boy she was somewhat interested in was a psycho murdering monster and would be even impressed that he was able to fool her. 4. 1.) Wednesday didn't end up with anyone at the end, her crush on Tyler also didn't have that much focus on the show. 5.) I get this one. However I also see it logical that because she is independent and also a teen at this point, she would be more distant towards her parents. Them spying her, being very affectionate and sending her to their old school makes her feel like her boundries were violated, even If these things aren't bad for the most part. @@PancakesVanilla I get that you're annoyed at the writers for making the characters act differently than they did on the Adams family. The spying is weird and Wednesday isn't a norml teen so maybe I shouldn't compare her to normal teens. Allthough, this is also a new show and can't Be compared too much to the OG. What I'm saying is W is an independent person in general, and 'for most people,' puberty only strengthens some of the type of characteristics W has naturally anyway. But that is not an excuse for Wednesday or the writing for anything. I don't Think she is a stereotypical teen for the most Part, she fully rejects the idea of phones, social media and dating for most of the season. She also doesn't seriously hate her parents and clearly warms to them.

I still am disgusted by how they made Wednesday “hate” her mother or be mad at her for just existing, and also when her parents show affection to each other. Yeah, the way they went about doing it in Wednesday was really weird and felt very awkward. Rather than making it seem like Wednesday despises her mother and doesn't want to be anything like her, they should have done something similar to Turning Red, where Mei-Mei loves and respects her mom, but she's starting to grow into her own person and the relationship dynamic is changing. That would have been cool to see in Wednesday with a character as outwardly emotional-less as she is. Wednesday considering Legally Blonde as a 'horror' movie because Elle is a girly girl is just totally unrealistic. In reality she would've relate to Elle so much because they are both viewed as the 'weird' ones and are ostracized. Honestly I think it makes more sense to her to view Bambi as a horror movie because of its cutesy stuff and the only part she likes is when Bambi's mom was killed. I disagree for one reason: the writers made all the Nevermore students conventional kids. The only thing "weird" about them was that they were cryptids. Wednesday wasn't goth as much as she was monochromatic--she doesn't wear makeup, jewelry, or fashionable clothing, nor is she melodramatic. If anything, she's more 19th Century Victorian in her normal appearance. Wednesday is not only not like them, she's actually somewhat sociopathic; Bianca even calls her a "psychopath" which is apparently unnerving to a school full of vampires and werewolves. These Outcasts are surprisingly well-adjusted for being technical monsters to the point where Wednesday, the "Normie," is considered weird. Now, had the writers not tried to appeal to Gen Z by making all the Nevermore students behave like Gen Z kids, you'd be absolutely right. But these kids are virtually interchangeable with the Normie world they somehow can't fit in with.

Goth doesn't mean evil, the Addams family aren't evil murderers, that's not the darkness they seek, they revel in the beauty of tragedy, the beauty of willing sacrifice, of pain and sorrow. It's about seeing the beauty of death and blood and weaponry, of poisons and bondage and melodrama, its about EMBRACING the positives of life THROUGH the negative! The show should clarify this and be consistent about it, yes Wednesday murdering pugsley is a joke as old as they are, but it's about helping pugsley find out the mystery and majesty of death. It's about subversion, that's what goths are, that's what the addams family stands for, light through darkness like the moon. Wednesday has always been the most deadpan family member and her characterization may act as such but she's not a bitch, Wednesday was never a needless bitch to everyone, she only fucked with people who challenged her, and mostly respects although without extreme empathy, the average humans feelings and priorities. Wednesday was never the girl in this show, which is why I can't stand it. Tim Burton just completely missed the point of Addams family in favor of his typical exact flavor of filmmaking, so disappointing. Yes the show is about her feelings but it's done so cringely from what I've seen

@@artatmidnight I for one really enjoyed the first season. Sure, I had my issues with it, such as the finale feeling somewhat rushed & underwhelming, plus Wednesday's battle with Crackstone was too short with her taking Crackstone out way too easily& then there's the issue with Crackstone, himself feeling more like a one note villain out of a Scooby Doo episode, rather than a serious threat, the way Tyler & Laurel were. Plus, the special effects are in need of an overhaul. But other than that, the show & characters have been a delight. I also love the shows' unique blending of campiness with the gothic horror & its' handling of themes such as prejudice, whitewashing history, children paying for the sins of their parents & how those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it. I loved the flashback scenes with Goody Adams, plus Wednesday's iconic dance. I also love how Wednesday opens up to people & grows throughout the season learning how to trust & care for other people outside of her family. I also loved the mystery aspect of the show which kept you guessing. I hated the love triangle as it felt forced. Ironically, Jenna Ortega has said that they will move away from love triangles & romance as well as a tonal shift next season to grittier & darker as season 2 will be a straight up horror movie. Although, I would like to see a romance blossom between Enid & Wednesday. I would love to see them do something in the vein of "The Omen" or "The Exorcist." Or perhaps "The Temple of Doom." Also, a highlight for me this season was Thing nearly dying & Wednesday breaking down in tears over it. Or Tyler showing her "Legally Blond & the horrified look on her face as she watches it cracks me up every time. That is the kind of reaction you'd get from Wednesday if she watched something cute & cuddly. Pure comedy gold! The good far outweighs the bad here. So much potential waiting to be unlocked. As an Addams family movies aficionado, the worst parts of the show for me were the dynamics between Wednesday and her family, especially her mom, the portrayal of Pugsley and how cringe Gomez was. I always got the notion that movie Wednesday loved and admired her parents and their very affectionate relationship, to the point where her and Glicker mimicked their expressions and demonstrations of love during that camp breakout scene. Regarding Pugsley, he wasn’t a wimp that needed his sister’s constant protection. If anything, I’ve always considered Pugsley the more dangerous one because he seems so innocent and cute but he does sinister things, like remove a stop sign that leads to major accidents and possible death, all with an adorable and proud smile on his face. Now to the most heinous crime committed by this show: the cringe I felt every time Gomez was on the screen *shudder*. In a show that took itself a bit too seriously, Gomez was protrayed like such a goofy simp with absolutely no charm and I just couldn’t stand it. The connection between him and Morticia felt more like a puppy following its master with its tongue out rather than mutual adoration and love. I get they were trying for something different but they ruined what was my favorite part of what made the Addams family so iconic: the genuine love and devotion within a family unit while accepting each other’s qualities, flaws and kookiness.

A good story for Enid would be that she could only transform into stressful situations for her or excessive anger (much tougher scenarios than in the first season), a matter that due to her cheerful personality would make her uncomfortable but would help her learn to accept all her emotions beyond of being "good" or "bad" creating another contrast with Wednesday who prefers not to feel. Sorry, it's not my first language.

Tyler was annoying for pursuing Wednesday when she didn't reciprocated. He kept trying to make her the bad guy for "giving him mixed signals" which she never did. She's supposed to be "taking advantage of him" by asking him to help her, or being friendly, but I just interpreted it as that; asking a friend for help. And she only goes on a date with him after he says that she's giving him mixed messages. He might have tried to gain her trust and feelings just to make her less suspicious of him, or because he wanted to break her heart, but I think they tried to make it seem like Wednesday needed to learn a lesson for ignoring his feelings, but he was just gaslighting and guilting her into reciprocating the whole time.

I think Enid reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally needs validation from others through reciprocation in order to quell her insecurities. Remember, the source of her inner turmoil is her mother's bigotry and her father's loving but impotent support. She's likely been dealing with this for many years and so the conflict is likely starting to boil over. Wednesday's "acceptance" of her affection might be something she "needs" as a personally-imposed mission statement: if her roomie can't accept her, how can her parents?

She clearly understood that she wasn’t a hugger when she first met her. When Wednesday backed up every time she tried to hug her, Enid stops and says “oh, yeah, sorry.” She understood that she wasn’t a hugger, she just forgot. Wednesday treated her horribly because she was colorful, and put her in danger several times along with everyone else. Sure, Enid’s not a pure Angel, but she did care about her to move back in after Wednesday nearly got killed.

Thank you, I didn't like the show a lot but this is a point of contention I never really understood. Crackstone gaining powers works because his discrimination is based on the fact that there are other beings more powerful than him, which cannot coincide with his worldview. Most discrimination isn't based on a moral or idealistic standoint but is in fact, rooted in a desperate need to maintain a power structure you believe is fair since it benefits you, so Crackstone being a super powerful undead wizard whose sole purpose is to kill every other magical being functions as a perfect demonstration of how hatred and bigotry isn't birthed from any sort of logic or value but instead an irrational necessity to maintain your own priviledge.

The one thing that has always bugged me about the whole piranha scene is that it is so very wrong. Contrary to Hollywood movies, piranhas don't even like humans who they perceive as predators and do not even like human flesh. They would only eat human flesh if there was no other option. They like plants, mollusks, worms and insects. On occasion they may ambush a small animal like capybara or a snake. So, the piranhas in the opening sequence would not have gone after the swimmers. Not only because they do no like human flesh but because the chlorine in the pool would have killed them within minutes. They would not have been able to mount an attack because the chlorine would enter their gills and put them in a stupor as the chlorine poisons their blood. I would have thought Wednesday, with her intelligence and blood lust, would know this.

I feel that I might've been the only person who wasn’t necessarily against the idea of the love triangle in Wednesday; in fact, I was actually quite fond of the idea. The Addams Family is all about parody, and I was ready to see that similar satirical lens taken to teen drama tropes. Plus, it wouldn’t be the first time Wednesday had a love interest: my man Joel Glicker, token Jewish serial killer fanboy, and his relationship with Wednesday in the Addams Family Values movie was very entertaining. The difference is that not only did Joel have a character, but he lends himself well the comedy of the movie. Joel and Wednesday’s relationship was a parody of summer camp romance plotlines and that concept to delivered a very charming and silly dynamic that had its own open ending as well. I think that’s part of the problem with Wednesday; it takes itself and the tropes it’s engaging with too seriously. The Addams are such a memorable and fun cast of characters because they are intrinsically absurd in their concept: a parody/inversion of the ideal suburban family who thinks everyone around them is weird while they're actually the weird ones. When you remove that silly subversive aspect from them, you remove their core. How fun would this series have been is it (no pun intended) lightened up a bit? If everything wasn’t played so straight, but instead these tropes were used effectively for parody? For example, here’s a suggestion to no in particular that I came up with. What if Wednesday’s interest in Tyler was because she was using him in her teenage rebellion phase? Wednesday doesn’t want to end up like her parents, so maybe she uses her relationship with Tyler as means of rejecting that. In reflection of the girls who date bad boys to get back at their parents’ trope, the comedic subversion is hooking up with Tyler and his boring good boy act and it falls apart because Tyler is actually the exact type of guy that'd fit in with the Addams, an outcast who revels in the joy of making the world just a little worse than where they left it. Maybe her disgust at Tyler killing people isn’t the act per say, but the fact that he’s now boring to her because he likes killing people and he’s just like other boys now, ugh. Like that’s kind of funny, it ties into Wednesday’s teenage angst in regards to her family, and it shows she’s not actually ready for a romance if she perceives it so childishly while keeping the betrayal element intact. Xavier, in comparison, would be the obvious choice for “Addams family candidate”; a tortured artist of a childhood friend who engages in slightly creepy gestures of love like painting her image in his worn-out art shed. He even has psychic abilities like the Addams women do in this show! And it’d work because in the eyes of the audience Xavier clearly supposed to be the Veronica to Tyler's Betty in the beginning (though this is inverted later on) but to Wednesday it would be flipped because Tyler would be the outsider and the "unsafe option" and Xavier wouldn’t be. It's so weird that Xavier and Tyler aren't really foils of one another when that is a staple in love triangle plots. I feel like if you swapped their roles, they wouldn't have very different dialogue. Why don’t you make that contrast more pronounced? It doesn't help that they're not very visually distinguishable from one another like Enid and Wednesday are. Hell, Tyler’s more of a foil to Enid that his actual competition, which is probably why people are more inclined to see Enid as a romantic option for Wednesday than the boys she's actually supposed to have romantic chemistry with. It's kind of unfortunate. Like regardless of how one feels about love triangles, I think we could've had something fun. Anyway, sorry for this super long comment lol. I care a lot about Addams family as you can tell.

I wonder if the intentions of this was the most mainstream take, Jekyll being good and Hyde evil or if they stuck to the original intentions as Jekyll being the good front and Hyde acting as a disguise for him to do all the evil things he repressed himself from doing. That would change how people perceive Tyler’s character if he had no control versus if he did have control. But either way- he was abused and groomed into that state of mind so- does it even matter? I felt the opposite. I thought Tyler with his mom issues, going to therapy yet still being traumatized as a Hyde, his dad, he was the interesting character. Where Xavier came off as a huge incel. Both of them did at times, "Why aren't you acknowledging my feelings for you?!?". Tyler admitting he enjoyed killing, I am hoping this is a true Jekyll / Hyde scenario for Tyler. Where Xavier, I hope he fades into the background. Weems was the best, loved every scene she's in, and they really screwed up killing her off. Making a character with a body count (or cover them up) lends to having the character die at the end of the story, like the mayor, but the character on paper and the actor portraying them can become 2 different people, much like Snape.

I dont think that the writers wrote xavier like that on purpose but if they had it wouldve been better because then over the course of the season we couldve have growth from xavier giving him an interesting storyline and comedic moments where wednesday repeatedly brutally rejects him with a stone cold face or set traps for him when he tries to approach her room or other places she hangs out. honestly, in the old adaptations of the Addams family Wednesday was still young, now she's a teenager, so it makes sense for her to get more in touch with emotions like every teenager does. The love triangle was not necessary but she is able to feel love and friendship and hurt, just at a different capacity than others. Its not like her family has a history of no emotion and no love so it does makes sense that she has the slightest amount of it looking at a standpoint that she's a teen now going through very different things.

In real life, conversion therapy is a screwed up thing that doesn't work and traumatizes the children involved. In the show, it actually makes sense(assuming that the methods used are not traumatic and do work). It's closer to that of medical intervention rather than discrimination. In essence, they compared her disability to queerness, which is not accurate(And very queerphobic, but that's a whole other conversation). You can't have one weakness that's also kind of an admirable strength to the teens that watch your show and expect that to make your character relatable and interesting.

Honestly I was a little bummed that she would be staying in a school away from her family. We know she cares about her family obviously, but it would’ve been so nice if her first willingness to give someone a hug would’ve been puglsy or gomez. Maybe not mortica if they want them to have a more gradual build up to it since Wednesday has that animosity towards her but I’d just like her to interact with them more. The 90’s movies didn’t really go TOO in depth with their relationships to each other so considering how well written Wednesday herself is, I hope we see more of her feelings with her dad & pugsly next season

Modern Addams Family depictions never seem to get the dynamic of the Addams' right. The whole point of them is to be a take on average families and it's problems. They're freaks in a normal world but are incredibly tight-knit and obviously love each other. That's what makes the Addams Family appealing, the contrast of their strangeness to other 'average' people.

When I first watched Wednesday I initially thought it's obviously made for kids. Youknow just your typical disneychannel/ nickelodeon kind of quirky jokes where you just stare with a blank face. (I thought: the only thing missing now are soundbites of people laughing and clapping) I honestly considered not to continue but I did anyway and I'm pleasantly surprised it didn't turn out to be a kids show, thanks to Jenna. If it wasn't for her, it would've been and it probably would've been unwatchable.

Here is a question. If Wednesday inherits her power from her mother, why is Goody Addams her teacher? Wouldn't that mean that the power didn't come from her mother, but from her father's side of the family? Are they implying that Gomez took Morticia's last name or......eew. You see what happens when they don't fully explain things?

One of my favorite movies is Persepolis, an autobiographical animated film. In it, a girl from Iran has to go to Europe for college because her family is scared for her life, because she's very outspoken, even to the police. But when she's in Europe, she runs into a similar problem- she's too outspoken for the people there too! I would believe that a goth girl was too much for even an outcast monster school, but the series never really reflects on that.

I absolutely cannot stand this show. Wednesday took out all of the heart and zaniness of the original Addams Family. She is just a super stuck up and selfish character that never has to deal with the consequences of her actions. The faux motger/daughter teenage drama was just silly. Morticia was never the kind of mother that they portrayed here. Basically everything we have known about this family was thrown out the window to set up this husk of a character. I thought Bianca was a better and more sympathetic protagonist that the title named character. I used to love Tim Burton, sadly now his creative spark is only good for aesthetics. Though there was one really good character and that was Eugene. Maybe they can make a Eugene and Bianca show!

Phenomenal video! I especially agreed with Enid’s “Wolf Out” and how she either should’ve transformed halfway or not at all. Thus solidifying the message that Enid doesn’t need to change and can be a hero, exactly as she is. Less of a spectacle, more logic! I will say, I would have loved more screentime with the families (mainly Addams versus Sinclairs versus Barclays). Imagine if the show had explored different family dynamics and advantageously used the Addams as the most functional family model (i.e. loving, communicative, supportive)-alike the source material-since the beginning? Over the course of the season(s), the Addams would have been juxtaposed with everyone else’s dysfunctional families. Wednesday could’ve learned to better interact with all kinds of people, and characters like Enid and Bianca could’ve been exposed to parents who are accepting and nurturing (as a result of getting to know Wednesday). Wednesday slowlyyyy (like, crawling through spider webs at a snail’s pace slow) learning to connect more with people AND indirectly sharing her iconic support system with everyone else. I think it would’ve been bloody engaging! Overall, still looking forward to S2.

I so love this idea! balancing others experiencing a healthy support system from Wednesday's family and Wednesday learning healthy social/empathy skills from others is such a great through line. you could definitely work that through multiple seasons, especially if Wednesday's growth is slow (which I would prefer too!). here's to hoping we get some of those elements in S2 🖤

the way Enid said "you're sending me to conversion therapy for werewolves??" and then proceeded to "wolf out" a few episodes later... what exactly is the message the writers are sending here? that the hero has to change (or worse, converted) to actually help people?? They try to use a really questionable analogy that sends a more negative message than a positive one in the end.

I feel like a lot of videos about shows on KZbin focus on the plot and never on the characters, their motivations, or how they interact within the story. You’ve got such a skill with analyzing themes and I love the way you broke down the questions for each character-it’s really interesting to look at them from that perspective because it points out what’s missing from their portrayals so clearly. Also, I love how you talk about costume design too-it can really say a lot about the characters and connect thematically to their lives!! While Wednesday Season One had issues, I overall enjoyed it and I’m excited to see Season Two and further the development of Wednesday and the rest of the characters. I respectfully disagree with your opinion about the characters being bland, most of the characters have layers we see over the course of Season One. Writers said Wednesday and Enid hugging was a huge step of emotional journey for Wednesday. They’re opposite but they work, Enid admits she has flaws but they’re part of her. Bianca has depth, how she tries to escape her mother and be her own person. Contrast Bianca’s relationship with her mother and Wednesday’s relationship with Morticia. By the end with the reveal of Tyler added more to his character. Hunter said Tyler was gaslighting Wednesday about “signals” and was manipulating her. That date was so Laurel can steal the diary. I look forward to seeing Tyler’s development now it’s out in the open. I think Xavier is interested in Wednesday because she’s not interested in romance. I don’t think him forgiving her is forced. First time there was a time gap and second time she took an arrow for him. Granted, I think Wednesday and Xavier are better as friends. Like Jenna said, not everyone ends up with their crushes and are better as friends. I didn’t mind the potential romance between Wednesday and Tyler as it made the reveal more impactful and made sense that Tyler was manipulating Wednesday. I didn’t like the love triangle, that was too much. Season One has found it’s feet and established and developed the characters. Season Two can continue to expand on that. Jenna said she and the writers want to focus more on horror aspects and move away from romance while allowing Wednesday to be her own individual, which I’m glad about. Wednesday as a series has great potential and from what Jenna said, they’re going to capitalise on that. Writers have plans for at least four seasons, much to look forward to.

I think the biggest thing I did not like about the show was the queer erasure. I would've LOVED if Wednesday was ace or aro (the boys gushing over her was so obnoxious) and if Enid stayed being unable to transform into a werewolf. (There are definitely a lot of queer kids who WANT to feel 'normal', so her wanting to be a werewolf still works with the analogy of the conversion camp.) If instead, the story focused on her trying to learn to love and accept herself for who she is, rather than who she thinks she has to be, I think that would've been so much more powerful. I do agree that Bianca deserved more screen time though, for sure.

Ok, I need to argue about Enid's arc because I've probably read too much into it and her transformation makes total sense to me to happen when it does. You talked about how she could've had to overcome a huge mental block and that is, TO ME, exactly what happens in the show. Let me point out some things established in the show and show the picture that formed to me: - Enid is on all social medias and knows all the gossip; still not invited to inner circle hangouts nor does anyone try to take her attention away from Wednesday. Clearly she's the most common type of outcast: the one that is trying to be included but just isn't for being "too much"; - Is already lonely, immediately tries to get friend support from someone she barely knows and does not seem to like her; - Greatest fear is to be alone forever; - Goes to a date with a boy on a Blue Moon, gets stood up and destroys a car, surprising even herself; - Finally gets the boy she likes, powers immediately start to act up, and it is implied later this happens regularly when they get more intimate; - Only seen having friend hangouts with A Literal Disembodied Hand, no one questions or cares, for better or worse - Nearly gets killed because of Wednesday, but still wants for her to apologize so she can come back to her room, probably not feeling very welcomed by the friend she's staying at; - Transforms only after having at least one close friend, a steady boyfriend and a somewhat friend (Wednesday), only under a Blood Moon and only in the face of a potentially very dangerous situation; those are also the only ones to touch/comfort her after her transformation. To me her arc is pretty clear. She had major anxiety about not ever being able to transform, and therefore being alone; once those fears started to die down and the moon's influence was strong enough, she finally was able to do it. One of the few arcs that actually develops throughout the entire show and gets resolved in a fairly satisfying manner.
