How does this Eureka compare to the 1ZPresso J-Max?

Thank you for the review! I have a question on grind size. You mentioned in another comment, it is ~12µ per click but on Eureka's webpage for the Baby's grind size chart it mentions 47µ per click. Is it possible to confirm with Eureka if there has been a change in the grind resolution for this grinder? Appreciate any help!

Oh man, I just ordered a Bianca. I’m excited to hear what you think of it. Hopefully you get the video up soon, so I can still be in the returns window of my new Bianca, in case you hate them or find some fatal flaw, haha.

Great one! when you say "I´ve never had coffee this good from a hand grinder", do you refer to the JE-Plus, or to the Eureka Baby?

Are you going to do a review of the Lido OG? It has a sort of 'memory' feature to make it trivial to go back and forth between espresso and pour over, or Turkish and moka for example, without losing your dialed in adjustment.
@wiredgourmet

Good suggestion. Every grinder with more than 360 deg adjustment range should have a feature like that.

I would like to assume 1Zpresso number of parts is because they are reusing some of them across multiple product lines... rather than a dedicated manufacturing process for each grinder.

Hi, thank you for the video! not seen many around that really dive into the technical aspect of things, which are actually the most important as less subjective. Have you had the chance to review other hand grinders apart from this eureka and the 1zpresso? I am wondering which of the ones out in the market produce less fine particles and so overall best grind consistency

Hello, thanks for the review! Your comment on that conical burrs need to be aligned to perfection is not true. Just review a Comandante C40 and observe the wobbly inner burr, it is basically floating by design. And well, even though their recent rep is bit shady general consensus is that the grinder is very capable. I have had one for few years and am enjoying it still.
@wiredgourmet
@wiredgourmet Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. The principle of self alignment you mention is real, as I discussed in the EK43 restored video. However, I'm skeptical that it could apply to something like this. In the EK, you have a prebreaker that creates uniform pieces that flow like a fluid entering the grind chamber and deflect the rotary burr evenly, vs a minuscule breaker system with various sized chunks crowding and pushing, not flowing. EK has a cap-start / cap-run motor with smooth torque almost as good as 3ph, versus a hand grinder's jerky rotation, like a bicycle with one pedal, which can only be overcome with a precise fit. So I doubt this idea of 'loose enough to straighten itself out' can scale down for a conical burr hand grinder. Precise and rigid is the established way to go, which is why you see it in Orphan, Kinu, Niche, 1Zpresso, Mazzer, now Eureka, etc. If Commandante really was onto something here, they would be copied :)
@quazster
@quazster Жыл бұрын
Comandante burrs are coupled by hex mounting to the axle. The flats of the hex in the axle are over 0.2mm smaller than the flats in the burr itself. Also the axle inner bearing mount is plastic. With very moderate finger force you can actually deflect the whole inner burr/axle assembly and that can be seen easily visually as you can see the gap change. Why this hasn’t been copied? There are many clever things hidden in plain sight, or then they have somehow managed to patent something related to this, or they have the capability to manufacture the burr hex hole with EDM machining or similar that others don’t. I’m still confident in my analysis on this, and if I find the time and motivation to really put this into a video I will do this. My analysis on their design is that it is a very clever way of implementing nice design- and manufacturability margins and to use cheap, plastic molded components to push the price down as they are after all paying for the assembly work in Germany and as we know that is not cheap. Their focus has been on the burr set which to me also is the way to start but unfortunately for them competition has picked up and they have ”lost their edge” (hahah haa). Appreciate your videos and can hear your experience in all the analysis of the electromechanical designs that are implemented in these things we make coffee with :-)

Thanks again for a thoughtful comment. You should definitely do a video about that. I'll stop at "skeptical". Experience has taught me that commenting further on something I don't have on the bench in front of me is likely to make me feel silly :)

How's the grind resolution on the Baby? I'm sure some folks may want to use this for espresso.
@wiredgourmet
@wiredgourmet Жыл бұрын
It's around 12µ per click if memory serves. Middle of the road for hand grinders. As with any clicky system, you might have to adjust your dose by a half a gram once in a while. Never gave me any more trouble than that.

I have the J-Max. I have been using it for most of the year and about 10 times a day. I was unaware of the plastic bushing. I bought it second hand. Almost new for a great price. I think if it breaks or when it breaks, I will buy electric. Or maybe I will. I have had no problem with this grinder. The more expensive hand grinders are the price of the Eureka electric grinders, so I would try the electric the next time.

I think you're on the money for the idea of a prosumer conical burr grinder. I had a J-max and my unit was uhh questionable as it arrived somewhat disassembled and I've found it hard to use (especially compared to the Q2). So I ended up with a DF64 and I'm happy for now.
