This is a very timely review. I ordered one about a week ago. I wish it wasn't noted for being loud but I have the Kin K6 for early morning when I have to be quiet. Thanks! Also I wanted to add, and you mentioned, that the setup is for 58mm use. I use 54 so I'll be trying without an adapter when I start. But it's something to consider.

Thanks for the review. I’ve had my D64 v2 for a couple months now and am super happy with it. Just wanted to share I just measured the DB’s of my grinder because I was surprised by both your results and the way the video sounded. Used Decibel X app and was bouncing between 79.6 and 80.2 with no beans. “On formica counter top”. Hit 88 to 91 with medium roast beans. Again thank for the review!

Thanks for sharing! Seems our db results are similar. I did my test with a light roasted coffee so maybe the different beans and different countertops is a factor.

Just for comparison if anyone has ever had a Rocky, I still have one and this morning using the same app, placed my phone at the height of my ears resting on the cupboard above the grinder and clocked it at 82dB grinding light roast beans for espresso - and that was a few notches well into burr chirp territory.

I have one and I’ve been using for several weeks now. I like it but if you grind for filter coffee the ionizer is not strong enough to remove all static electricity from the chaff. You end up with chaff all over the outside of the grinder still.

I'll get this one, but would love your input on burrs. I'm considering Titanium or the SSP Cast lab. Any thoughts would be really appreciated. :P
@coffeenerdaaron Жыл бұрын
In my experience coated burrs like Titanium or Diamond Like Carbon (DLC) coatings is that they tend to produce a little bit more fines in the filter brew grind sizes. I don’t have any scientific data to back that up but it has always seemed that way to me, and some fellow coffee enthusiast friends who have experience comparing them, however I don’t mind them at all and you will get more longevity out of coated burrs. You can also adjust all the typical things in your brewing like grind size, agitation, water temp, and contact time to mitigate some of the inherent results for brewing with a higher quantity fines. I don’t have experience with the Lab Sweet burrs in this particular grinder but I have had them in a Fellow Ode, and I did enjoy them. I felt like as the name indicates the coffees were noticeably sweeter and seemed to be more balanced if memory serves… I haven’t had coffee from them in a while. From what I hear people really love the Cast stainless and red speed coated burrs in this grinder so I don’t think you can go wrong, but it’s hard to speak for someone else’s taste preferences. I did enjoy the coffee from those burrs but personally I prefer a bit more clarity for filter brewing than it seemed like they offered at the time a brewed with them.

Thanks for the awesone review, as always, sir Aaron! Just want to get insights on how good it is on filter coffee. How does df64 gen 2 compare to fellow ode gen 2 (both with stock burr), considering that the stock ode is supposedly filter only grinder.
@coffeenerdaaron Жыл бұрын
Thanks!! I think the DF64 V2 with the new Turin burrs does very well on filter! In my comparing it’s almost as good if not better on filter for some coffees. It was very hard to tell the difference with some coffees, with other the Ode was a little better but considering it can’t do espresso… I think the DF64 is the way to go if you have espresso needs also!

I wouldn’t let it bother you, it’s worth it to get an overall great grinder like this for this price. Honestly I don’t know! I have seen the red button version but I thought those were early versions of the gen 2. Thankyou for mentioning the volume. That's a deal-breaker for me, regardless how awesome it is in other aspects. I already have a loud grinder (Eureka Classico). My next one simply must be significantly quieter under load and not. I was also enticed by the DF64V. It is quieter. However, according to another TY-er (Spro)...it jams easily. So that one is also a no. I guess I'll check back in another six months when Turin comes out with the next refinement of the 64G2 and 64V. No rush. Would there be room inside this grinder's case to add some sound-absorbing foam? Cheers

@ziptiefighter Жыл бұрын
@@coffeenerdaaron It would be interesting to identify where a given grinder is loudest. The opening at the top? Perhaps the chute opening? Maybe the base?...especially since most users (fair to say) have their grinder sitting on a hard smooth surface that acts like a band shell. I've not tinkered with any foam base for a grinder to sit upon or added deadening material inside. But I know 80+db in the AM is jarring. That 83V is a chonk. At this point, I'd opt for something physically smaller for my small (galley style) kitchen. Thanks for the prompt feedback 👊

This is pretty nice but dang it's quite a bit expensive over the encore ESP 😮 but I am pretty tempted to just make one investment and call it a day 🤔 Does it ever go on sale?
@NeverMind353 Жыл бұрын
I have the ESP and I ordered the Gen 2. Youre gonna be happier for longer because of the better grind quality (less fines) and much more granular adjustment. If you brew filter with the ESP the steps are pretty large, leaving you overextracted on 24 and underex. on 25 (in my experience)
@piplup10203854 Жыл бұрын
@@NeverMind353 🤔 Ohh, I see. Thank you ☺ I agree with you that I'd be happier for longer having the better grind quality. I appreciate your input. Yeah, I think that's the route I'm gonna go towards. It's a little more expensive but with how long it's gonna last me it's a better investment.

I have been using the encore ESP for almost 6 months. I do not recommend it, for multiple reasons, but the biggest is losing the calibration when opening the machine to clean in. Many parts and most of them are plastic and there is even a felt ring that I already had to replace. Last few weeks have been frustrating with the ESP, so here I am looking at the DF64.
@piplup10203854 Жыл бұрын
@@equaleyez Thank you for letting me know ☺ I did end up going for the DF64 Gen 2. I just received it a few days ago but I really like it. The adjustments are very easy and there's like .1 or less retention so if I put in 17 grams of beans I am getting 17 grams out :) I haven't zero'd mine or do a burr alignment because it was good out of the box but I'd recommend it. That sucks your ESP has been giving you headaches :( that's a huge bummer. I am really liking the DF64, I upgraded to the Diamond like burrs and got a medium roast but I am loving the taste over it and it's noticeably better than the pre-ground I was having it's a lot brighter so even not super fresh beans are still tasting leagues better.

@aimorallo638 Жыл бұрын
Can the SK40 compete with the DF64 Gen 2 for medium-dark roast espresso?
@coffeenerdaaron Жыл бұрын
Kind of hard to compare since that’s a conical burr vs flat burr and they generate different flavor profiles based on the way they grind and the particle shape of the ground coffee. I never go much past the lighter side of medium coffees and I’m generally brewing pretty light stuff, but I will say that typically a flat burr is going to highlight the brighter flavors and have more clarity, so if that’s something you like with your dark roast coffee then I’d say the DF is better, and also the DF is much better when it comes to filter brew grinding so if you have a need for espresso and filter from one grinder I’d say the DF is the better option. But the SK40 does a great job for espresso at a lower price so from a return on investment perspective if all you are going to use it for is darker roast espresso then the SK40 may suit you better. Hope that helps!
@aimorallo638 Жыл бұрын
@@coffeenerdaaron I do have a comandante for filter so I'm considering the SK40 since it will be espresso focused. However, I'm torn since the DF64 has been praised by a lot of coffee enthusiasts and I am afraid I might miss out.

Great review!! For light-medium roast which aftermarket burrs do you recommend? SSP HU or SSP Lab sweet cast?
@coffeenerdaaron Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Personally I prefer the Lab Sweet if you're going to dip into the medium roast range, especially if you're doing espresso. HU's are great but in my experience the clarity and acidity is higher with them, which is great for light roasts if you like that, but with medium roasts it may not be as desirable. But it really depends on your taste preferences and brewing methods. It would be great if you could taste them side by side to know which ones you prefer for the coffees you like. Unfortunately I don't have a ton of experience with the HU's, especially not directly comparing the two in the same grinder with the same coffee!

I had Lab Sweets in an Ode I borrowed from a friend a while back so I didn’t do a ton of espresso at home with them, I think I only pulled a couple shots, but I’ve had shots pulled at shops using those burrs in other grinders and they’ve always been good. They have great sweetness and body, and enough clarity to satisfy. Granted it’s hard to compare the same burrs in different sizes and in different grinders. I feel like the Lab Sweet overall is a pleasing flavor profile to most coffees, which is why they’re so popular. I don’t think you can go wrong with them but it’s hard to speak for someone else’s taste preferences.

For someone who owns SPP‘s HU esprsso burrs, how the stock burrs compete against them and is it worth to keep them or better sell the SSP and get another burr set to play with for the money because the stock burrset and SSP HU are to similar? Thanks 🙏🏼
@coffeenerdaaron Жыл бұрын
I may not be fully understanding your question but if you already have SSP HU burrs and you like them why would you sell them? As far as the standard burrs vs the HU, the HU is a better burr and is going to give you a different and better flavor profile. They are not close enough to warrant selling your HU burrs for the standard burrs if you like the results you’re getting from your HU’s.
@Niikolaii Жыл бұрын
I mean, the stock burr geometry looks very similar to the SSP HU, I would assume also the flavour profile is very similar, let’s say the stock burrs provide 90-95% the same flavour profile of the SSP HU I would then rather sell the SSP’s and keep the stock burrs and get instead let’s say SSP Lab Sweets to play with.
