Howdy Tim I am 54 years old and just started Euro nymphing last year.. it is a blast and a game changer no doubt...... I think if we practice wet hands and keep the fish in the net and in the water . The trout should be fine ... I also love Tying simpler flies paragons in France flies and Sneak attack

Glad you enjoy it as much as me, "game changer" is a great way to describe Euro nymphing! Regarding the consequences, they are there and it's something I want others to be aware of. Keeping our hands wet definitely helps, but hooks are hooks and they have a way of finding themselves all over a fish. Catching more fish just simply increases the number of fish being jabbed in other locations aside from their mouths. I appreciate you taking the time to comment, plus thanks for mentioning my Sneak Attack pattern! Tim www.troutandfeather.com

I used to fish this way on the Green River and Little Naches in WA back in the mid 90s, but with a Berkley 8 1/2 ft spinning rod and daiwa reel. A guy from CA moved to WA and showed me, he said just take a hook put it on your mono line with no weight, then root around in the water for rock worms(little bug that builds a house of sand grains) and use them as bait...fish after fish after fish, never caught so many trout. I moved out east and stopped fishing like that, but recently got into fly fishing and now see this euro nymphing and it brought me back to those days and weeks using a spinning outfit to do basically the same thing. Now I want to try it with a nymph rod and nymph, seems like it would be way easier than using a spinning outfit. :)

Thanks Tim, definitely not cheating but almost directly goes against what we were taught with traditional fly fishing. When I do it, almost feel like I’m disrespecting fly fishing. Perdigons and Czech style nymphs for the most part, seem to not follow any bug hatch cycles. Sometimes I feel like I can close my eyes and pick out a perdigon or a Czech style nymph and the fish will hit it without rhyme or reason, very effective but weird. Almost feel like the fish hit the bead and not the “fly”. Maybe another video for another time, ha! Right now gonna stick with regular fly line fly fishing, but definitely will euro nymph when I feel it’s necessary. I still love the bugs, the life cycles and the challenge of matching the hatch. It may catch a lot of fish, but to me , it’s a lot more than that. Maybe the title should have a question mark at the end? Again, great video Tim! Thank you!

Tim, I appreciate your comments in this video. As I look back over the years, traditional fly fishing was something I had had handed down to me by my father. But in recent years I made the switch to euro nymphing. Since I was always busy when the best fly fishing was in the spring, I was denied the opportunity because work was prime time important (farming). But now as I am retired it was time to get back to what I loved. Euro nymphing made that enjoyable since what you identify as cheating; became the only way I fish today. I feel that I am making up for all the years I missed due to work. It’s more fun catching fish than dreaming about the ones I never caught. Now I need to try all these streams so many like you video highlight throughout the state. Thanks for all your videos.

Great video Tim, thanks for sharing your thoughts. There are certainly times that Euro nymphing is so effective it feels like you've enabled some sort of fly fishing cheat code. As a novice fly angler, nymphing under an indicator was something I've always struggled with. Discovering tight line techniques and experiencing moderate success almost immediately is finally what gave me confidence in fishing nymphs. That carried over in helping to improve my ability to fish an indicator rig effectively by a great deal.

Thanks for sharing, Chris, and I'm glad you didn't read TOO FAR into the "cheating!" :-) Fishing this style is definitely fun, and like you mentioned, I was throwing an indicator yesterday, as I needed my rig on the other side of a swift-moving river...the best of both worlds combined. When fly fishing, if you're not "cheating" you're not trying. I've went through the guilt and shame phase when i was Euro "nymphing" a dual fly rig with a pink Squiggle worm and an Eggstasy egg pattern on the point. I felt dirty lol. I had to sit down for a minute and reevaluate my life choices. I finally decided to keep going, but I'd periodically look around to make sure nobody was looking at the mortal SINs that were tied to my leader. Two "flies" that aren't (or are) "Flies". The Squiggle worm / Eggstasy combo is absolutely a stock trouts worst nightmare, and I am a shameless wretch LOL! Great vid!

Hi Alex, and that's tough to do. I specifically wanted to focus on learning how to float the sighter, which Pat gave me an incredible foundation. hey tim! i've been fishing with josh also. euro is the way to go to catch trout. but i'm glad you mentioned the conservation aspect. even if we do everything correct in handling the fish, there is still a mortality rate. even if we could be as low as 10%, that's one dead fish for every ten caught. we know euro is all about the numbers. just my thoughts. cheers!

Really great video Tim. Amazed how a lot people that think Euro nymphing is “easy”. As if you take fly line out of the equation, put on some “anchor” flies and suddenly trout lose all inhibitions and race to hit your fly. Just like anything else, it is a technique that requires practice to get better. Learning the nuisances takes time on the water. Once you have the foundation down, you can expand to dry-dropper, light flies, floating the sighter, casting at distance, etc....It just a super effective technique for fly fishing. One that requires practice to become proficient, just like any other approach to fly fishing.

Right - there is no magic formula. There are many other things to master in fly fishing that go beyond the technique - like being able to read the water and understand where fish might be in different seasons. Tim was already an accomplished angler in these other dimensions so it is no surprise that a euro technique made such a big difference for him.

Your comments are appreciated, and when I first started, the beginning was rough! Figuring out when to strike, the rod angle to choose, and even tippet lengths were all new concepts. I absorbed every piece of information I could, including podcasts, magazine articles, George Daniel's book, and talking to others online. Though a steep learning curve, it's one that I personally believe was worth the time. Easy? Nothing in fly fishing is easy. I think it's easy to forget what our own beginnings were like, even with a traditional fly line. Thanks for the time, and I'm curious: What resources did you utilize when learning? Thanks for the kind words, but I would also argue that Euro nymphing forced me to truly examine water differently than I used to. Knowing it was such an effective technique for others, I pushed myself to really break down its intricacies...which took time! Then when I got to new water types that I didn't fish regularly (slack water especially), I became very intentional in determining ways the Euro nymph system could apply to them. Most importantly, I dedicated an entire season to this year and absolutely encourage others to do so with whatever new system they're learning, be it swinging wet flies or fishing articulated streamers. Again, I appreciate the kind words...and if you do come up with a magic formula, please share it with me! ;-) Tim www.troutandfeather.com

Hey Tim. Enjoying my subscription... My 'home water' is the Upper Sac near Mt Shasta. On this river, 'tight line / high sticking' was started in the 1920's by a Wintu Indian, Ted Towendolly, and made famous by Ted Fay in the 40's - 70's. I've added a couple Euro nymphing concepts to my highsticking and I feel it has benefited. Tight lining is an amazing technique, but I don't know if it or Euro nymphing is cheating, but I feel folks only focussed on Euro nymphing get cheated out of the full experience in fly fishing. When my cousin who is totally sold on Euro nymphing after one trip (with the same basic results/numbers as his previous 'conventional' trip) tells me 'matching the hatch' is not important, I think is truly unfortunate. I've read an article about a young Pennsylvania Euro guy who had the same attitude towards his traditional mentor. While I dredge the freestone bottoms with my Ted techniques, there is nothing I love more than figuring out what the fish are feeding on by reading the rocks, rise forms, flying bugs, flows, etc. and getting success. That is when I eagerly change my tight line setup to whatever is necessary. I've been fly tying since I was 12 yrs old, and I'm thinking much of the flies today are becoming 'lures'. While flies like the perdigons got me interested when they were first introduced, I've become disenchanted with the monotony. Heck-- even Vlad's Polish nymphs had more intent to resemble some bug! So maybe Euro nymphing is not cheating, but many out there are getting cheated of the full experience for fly fishing.

Hi Tim, Thanks for replying! I have been fishing for trout since I was 5! Started with worms! I am 67 now. I taught myself to tie flys at 14 by reverse engineering a fly I was given and never stopped! Almost all my trout fishing has been with a fly rod since! I almost always fish a Muddler style fly on the point and a smallish wet on the dropper (usually a #12 picket pin). This combo has caught thousands of trout for me over the years! Hardly ever fish dry flys as I never felt the need and it was very hard to get decent dry fly hackles where I live 50+ years ago! As for some “purists” being “offended” by using a spinning rod, I think that is simply malarkey! I remember meeting Dick Swan at a sportsman’s show in Toronto many years ago and listening to him tell me about the advantages of his noodle rods for steel head in the Great Lakes! Did buy one but not his! If that method was good enough for someone like him....! have it all these years later but never used it! But you have now reminded me so perhaps it will get some use at long last! Tight lines!

Tim, I was always frustrated with the indicators, knowing there is so much slack between the indicator and the fly in broken water so when this technique came around I went all in, I love it and it's been a game changer. However, I still indicator nymph when the fish are hard to reach or on big water or on very steady long riffles it still works good. I'd rather dry fly fish, euro nymphing is tiring for sure. I also love to wet fly fish when the fish are active. It is a nice break from euro, but euro is my go to and I catch a lot of fish. It is amazing how fast a wild fish can spit out a nymph and you will find that our with euro.

Thanks Tim, I thoroughly agree with your sentiments. I love euro nymphing, though I had thought for years that it looked a bit boring just hanging nymphs under the rod tip. But after discovering some of the longer line nymphing techniques using spanish and french style leaders I've totally changed my mind about that. It's skilful, it's exciting, it's versatile and as you mentioned first and foremost, it's deadly. I also share some of your reservations about being careful with it. I had a morning recently here in Australia where I caught 65 trout from a 200 metre stretch of river. Not a big river either, only a couple of rod lengths wide. That caused me to think very carefully about how I handle fish and really made an effort to take good care of the ones that I catch, and to release them in the best condition I can. And also at some point, after catching enough fish, maybe I will change to another technique or just stop fishing. Thanks for sharing!

I started euro nymphing a couple of years ago and absolutely love it! Before my husband and I would catch a couple of fish a day and be happy but when I started euro nymphing I was catching 3 times more fish than him! After a couple of months of watching me catch so many fish and he would only catch a handful his jealousy got the better of him and asked me to teach him. Now we both euro nymph and absolutely love it! Before we would have days where we wouldn't catch any fish, that never happens anymore. We got skunked for the first time in over year a couple of weeks ago! 1 time in over a year that we didn't catch anything! I consistently catch 20 to 40 fish whenever we go out and people can't believe it but we've got the pictures and video to prove it! We are both always very careful and how we handle the fish and make sure we touch them as little as possible and get them back in the water as fast as possible. It really made our home waters feel like an entirely new place to both of us! I learned watching videos on KZbin from Devin Olson and Lance Egan mostly. They both have great tutorials out there as well as their euro nymphing video series, I bought all of them and still continue to research and learn and love it! As some who is just getting into fly fishing and someone who hunts and fishes for food. If there is a way for me to increase my odds of putting food on the table, I do it within the areas fishing/hunting regulations. Secondly, casting all day long is not much fun. As a beginner fly fisher, its very easy to gets discouraged when you are still learning how to dial in the one particular fly they are hitting on. It’s too easy for me to revert back to drifting night crawlers on my spinning rod and know I’ll get fish to put on the table. When starting whatever is the easiest and most productive, is the best way to get and keep people in fly fishing.

Here’s a hot take for you Tim: Euro nymphing, tenkara, and cane pole fishing are all the same and are all great techniques. I euro nymph and tenkara fish by necessity. Most of the smaller waters I have access to are tight, brush covered, rocky streams with great brook trout populations. The flies are easy to tie, the technique is simple, and the results are great. It’s a no brained for me. Euro and tenkara for trout and western fly for anything else.

Thanks for sharing, though it's tough to argue that any two styles are all the "same." Do they have similarities? Absolutely, but I just returned from Iceland, and my group fished Euro, Tenkara, and traditional fly. The Euro leader was able to fish at distance, over 40' away, and deadly...until the wind kicked up! Tenkara was the surprise winner for Arctic char in tight situations, again until the wind kicked up. Each has their place and I believe that being proficient at many styles is a benefit to anglers. Man, what a tough subject. I mean, sometimes I'm out 'euro' nymphing and other days I'm swinging wet flies. Sometimes I'm looking to slay 'em and other days I just want to pull out the trout spey rod and swing all day. I was the first of our little group to start tight line nymphing and gradually everybody else has ended up adding 10'+ rods to their vault. Personally, I committed to one year of fishing a mono rig setup. It taught me a lot about fly fishing and, ironically, I became a better caster in the process. The margins for error casting a 30' leader with weighted flies is certainly smaller than casting a dry fly. And ultimately, you are going to want to actually cast these flies. Lobbing is for bobber guys. ;) Cheating is casting bait. But, casting bait isn't cheating if you're bait fishing. Of course, if you're bait fishing with a fly rod I might not want to have a beer with you - unless you're paying?

It is a great way to fly fish and catch many trout. When I was growing up in the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia and Virginia for Brook trout, we used to fish this way in the late forties and fifties. We didn't call it Euro nymphing, but we used short lines fishing various flies with split shots in those small streams. We used both conventional tackle and fly tackle. The fly line never left the rod tip. The world has rebranded this long ago fishing technic used by hillbillys with tungsten beads 60-degree jig hooks instead of lead shot 90-degree jig hooks and Euro nymphing rods instead of conventional rods. In my opinion, it is an improved technic, that catches a lot of fish, not a new one that the world has been led to believe. Danny Barker, Fly Fishing Guide

Hi Tim Danny Jettt here. In regards to your question should we fish Euro Nymphing more or less? It would be my opinion we should retain all fishing styles including Euro Nymphing. Fish are handled by anglers every time we catch one. As long as we wet our hands and not handle the fish very much. Then the fish slime protective coating would not be removed too much. As long as that fish is immediately returned to the water, then it will survive. I have fish I have hooked prior and even 3 or 4 times and all were very healthy. True some are hooked too many times causing holes and tears in the mouth. But the mouth skin does grow back. The only other down fall would be the fish learning the technique and refusing to take the lure. Thanks Tim for the excellent video. It was great.

I love to euro nymph to. I do think in some rivers it can be a handicap also. For instance this past weekend I fished a stretch of the hiawassie river in Georgia. It belonged to the campground we were staying. After walking around a bit I noticed they had fish feeders on their property to. These fish would hit euro nymphs so hard and violently they would snap my flys right off the tippet. All I had was 5x and 6x tippet with me. I brought 5 to the net. These fish were hot. 16 to 18 inch fish were dogging me. The big fish in their would snap you right off. Next time I go back their. Streamer rod in hand and the fight will be on. I also have got caught up thinking the euro game was all their was. I’m 52 a life long streamer addict. Tie all my own flys. Euro nymphing is addictive just from the numbers. Interesting! Wouldn’t drop shot fishing with a fly rod be very similar and effective too?? And couldn’t one use 2 or more flys at the same time at different heights in the water column? Hi Mike, and drop-shot fishing is another style for sure. In that system, the contact is more so with the weight versus the flies. It's a great system to use, especially when wanting to drift multiple small flies in fast or deep water, when their weight alone won't put you in the correct position. But the spinning rod? Ha! I'm sure others may be offended by that suggestion, though I will counter that the Euro nymph rod is getting close to a noodle rod. ;-) More importantly, this is fishing and all about having fun and selecting the method(s) we prefer best. Without question this is a more effective way of presenting subsurface patterns to fish holding in the lower third of the water column. The question that has been nagging at me lately is this... When the time comes to teach my kids how to fly fish, is it unfair to them to start them with this technique? Me, you and probably most of the commenters learned the sport in a much different way. I personally read books on insects, hatch cycles, and how to create feathered imitations. I studied others' techniques and spent countless hours experimenting with traditional methods of fly presentation. I've been on the water for 35 years, fished different parts of the world, etc, all because of the work it took to get me here. Starting kids right off straight line nymphing will reward them with the thrill of hooking fish, but with a tradeoff IMO. I think kids will not learn properly loading of the rod (ever try to double-haul your micro rig?), line management, the feeling of a soft vs. fast flex rod. Then there are the patterns... I use one or 2 perdigon patterns in 3 different sizes for an entire season in Central PA. How will a kid learn the entomology and "matching the hatch" if she/he is shown a handful of patterns that the fish just cant resist all year long? I'd love to hear your feedback.

(good luck to those of you in Rio Linda) I know a few that have jumped both feet into it. As for me, I like the blue line thing and brook trout. If anything I may buy a 7'6" 3 wt just for that. I really don't get started till the end of June going into July. I like the thin water and terrestrials, midges, and well trico's. The trico's forced me to get up make the drive to the only game in town, the West Branch of the Farmington to fish the spinner fall. 70 miles one way, I leave my home at 3:30 in the morning so I am all set up and ready as the sun comes up. I fish to around 11 am. And there are few people around. It's been more crowded than usual the last two years. This year it's been terrible with crowds. As for the other thing, fishing is still a blood sport even with catch and release, there is a percentage of mortality and it should be considered. Over the long term, there may be some effect on trout populations, especially wild trout populations. No, it's not cheating, but I think we should give a lot of thought to the number of fish brought to the net. We have bag limits, catch and release is widespread and accepted, maybe a landed fish limit or hook up limit should be considered. An unwritten rule something self-imposed.

@@TimCammisa No Tim, I gave up nymphing many years ago. Clearly a very effective style, to each his own - as long as its legal. My guess is that the legions of Euronymphers out there will find that its effectiveness will diminish over time - especially with attractor nymphs. Take a look in George Daniels' fly box and you'll have trouble finding anything but hatch matching ties. It is much harder for trout to get conditioned to naturals v attractors; the current barrage of Perdigon "flies" will find the same fate as most fad flies.

Thanks for commenting, Bruce, and I'm curious about "elementary" for this system. From my personal experiences, typical nymph fishing involved a standard fly line, a nymph leader, and some split shot (indicators occasionally). For this system, I am now making constant adjustments to my tippet, rod angle, weight selection, and water type. Though I've been involved in Euro nymphing for years, I still am researching leader systems and strategies to enhance casting and fishing. Does it catch more fish? For me, absolutely. With that said, I LOVE a traditional fly line when fly fishing on lakes, saltwater, and dry fly fishing. Casting with one is like nothing else, again, in my opinion. Ha, Chris, you're pretty close! I build bamboo fly rods, too, and when I use my Euro nymph rod, it's more of a stiff butt with flexible tip...but with a strong recovery after the cast (unlike bamboo and noodle rods). Now the old hat, that's optional. ;-) Thanks for the comment and I hope all is well! Tim www.troutandfeather.com

I've been euro nymphing and it is way more effective in my opinion. Where I live not many have heard of it and I won't tell them the real numbers anymore, they won't believe me anyway. Lots of bigger fish too, and places you can't really fish properly any other way

The comments are appreciated, Jody, and I know what you mean re: the numbers. Let's take this another direction: If you had to return to "traditional" fly fishing, do you think the strategies you learned Euro nymphing would improve that facet for you? Tim www.troutandfeather.com

@@TimCammisa I still do like to throw dry flies and streamers. I'm sure euro nymphing has helped with other types of fly fishing, but I think of it more as another tool in the tool box. It just so happens to work amazingly well

It’s pretty sad that “ numbers “ have become the driving force of fly fishing for trout to some fly fishers. It’s great that Euro nymphers are catching so many trout. It’s fun to have success when fly fishing. However, I must say for me some of my best days out on a stream have been a two trout day. Life is too short to become so focused on numbers. Stop and smell the roses - flora and fauna that encompass the “whole” of the fly fishing experience. I have been fly fishing and tying for 53 years. Maybe that’s why I feel the way I do.

Thanks for the comment, John, and you're not alone in your beliefs. Catching fish (i.e. numbers) has always been part of the sport of fishing, and fly fishing is an extension so it's naturally there. The beauty of our sport is that we're each allowed and encouraged to drive in our own lanes. It sounds like you love fly fishing too and don't worry too much about what others think. Thanks again. I love doing Euro nymphing but man nothing beats a 3-5 trout day swinging huge streamers. I just love the grabs and trying to read water for a streamer hit (even if the vast majority of hits comes on the dangle for me lol). It's especially something else when you get that hit on the other side of a stream in some slack water literally milliseconds after your streamer hits the water.

Like everyone I want to be successful and catch something. However, I just don't enjoy European Nymphing. I've done it successfully many times and it just isn't fun to me. I enjoy the satisfaction of a great cast and even a retrieve with streamers. I get more satisfaction making a perfect cast than catching the fish, so for me it just isn't worth doing.

Sure it's fishing, like in a barrel, just don't call it fly fishing. The guides in NY would resort to this method with clients that were new to the sport. Send them home happy.
