Great job boys. I love the Farmington, being a local myself ! Dead drifting soft hackles has always been a favorite method for me. When the fly is on the rise and swing in the water column can be a killer ! Thanks for the video 👍

You can slow down your drift with a regular rig by adding more length between the indicator and the flies ,you can also slow it down on the bottom by adding a little more weight ,thats how i do it

I already miss the high water! I think the local Brook Trout in my area are happy, the high water probably cleared out some deep holes and pockets under the banks. I have had great success throwing big dries right next to overhanging brush.

Except for the technical setup, they've been 'Euro nymphing' on the Upper Sacramento River since the early 1900's by Wintu tribesman, Ted Towendolly and later Ted Fay. Basically the same drift technique except Ted Fay didn't have any "sighter" section of line, but instead he'd to follow his connection knots. The bigger the knot the better, especially as he got older I suppose.

Jay, that is really interesting to read and I think there have been many variations of "euro nymphing" over the years. Thanks for that valued input! Have a great fishing season.

This is just meant for historical purposes, not to slam anyone, but actually, older fly fishers learned to nymph this way. There were no bobbers/strike indicators. They became popular later. "Euro Nymphing" was actually defined by using 3-5 (or more) flys at a time with a very long leader and tippet. Frequently, they used wet flys, soft hackles and flymphs, but nymphs were used as well. Over the last 20 - 25 years the fly shops, magazines and equipment people decided they needed a new gimmick to sell equipment, etc, so they decided to call nymph fishing (without an indicator) "Euro" fishing. Just look at some of the older fly fishermen. I have never seen video of (or in person), Joe Humphreys, George Harvey, Vince Marinaro, Lee Wulff, Lefty Kreh (or others prior to them) ever fishing with a strike indicator. Watch Joe Humphreys' recent videos. He still doesn't use a strike indicator and fishes just as they are doing here for the most part. We didn't have any fancy colored line and didn't need it. It is the way we learned to nymph fish. There have been very few creative advancements in fly fishing that haven't been done before. They are now just given different names and recreated as something "new". The materials have gotten better, such as the graphite rods and the quality of the chicken feathers, etc but I have not seen any technique that had not been done before or new fly category, etc. Even the idea of strike indicators was used ... probably since the beginning of the sport. They just used a big dry fly as the indicator. I enjoyed the video ... well done and in a beautiful place. Keep 'em comin'.

This fishing technique is not fly fishing, it's touch fishing with artificial, but anyway you can also use the worm, maybe catch more fish. Greetings giovanni

It's not snagging. The fish are aggressively striking the flies. Fly fishing is evolving daily. 12' rods and flashy materials have been incorporated for 100 years.

I understand your frustration. I've fly fished more many years, mostly dry flies and classic wet flies. I've always found suspension (indicator) nymphing to be quite boring, but also very effective. A few years ago I gave Euro nymphing a try and bought all the "necessary" super thin fly line (difficult to cast), indicator sections, etc. While I found the system cumbersome to use, I found the concept to be interesting. The main concept is to use very thin line in order to get the fly down fast. But you don't need to buy a Euro nymphing rig to accomplish this. Generally you're fishing in only two to four feet of water. So I went back to a more standard ("sane") method...standard 9 foot tapered leader but with a longer tippet section (un-tappered). The main thing is to keep only the tippet (thinner) section in the water and use a standard "high sticking" method and follow the drift very carefully in order to detect a strike, which may be very subtle. This method is much more effective than suspension (indicator) nymphing and, more importantly, more fun (but not as much fun as dry fly or classic wet fly fishing...in my humble opinion). It also makes it extremely more easy to switch to dry flies should a hatch develop.

This seems to me a way to sell us more equipment. New small weight long rods, the new reels to go with them, and the million versions of leader/tippets. I'm not sold...

I was skeptical as well and resisted trying this type of nymphing for years. Then one day I was in PA and watched an angler who was doing this and kicking butt compared to the other fly fishers who were using indicators. Peaked my interest again, so when I got the chance to go out with Jesse....well you know the rest. I am sold on this new technique and practice on my local river which hold bass and panfish. Takes practice and I have created some real messes with the leader/fly rigs....but I am starting to get it and wow, is it effective. If you get a chance to try this, hopefully you can experience this type of fishing....it is fun and deadly! Cheers Colin

A 5 wt reel typically balances very well on a 3 wt nymph rod; I bet you've got one? You can definitely fish a 5 wt 9' in this style, to give it a try (though it isn't ideal). It's almost entirely about getting flies down fast and rolling them along the bottom. The leader setup described in this video is alright, but the Mono Rig as described by Troutbitten is much superior. Since switching from dry droppers, the amount of fish I catch has quadrupled (no joke). It is an insanely effective technique for catching fish.

@@Jaimelapoesie Agree 100%. In fact, I've used the mono rig on a 7'-6" 2 weight and love it. The key to all of this is weighted flies (though even that isn't 100% necessary), sighter mono instead of strike indicator, thin tippet and mono to the reel. I'm still using splitshot in most cases and the same flies I've always used. Just keeping a tight connection to the flies and using the sighter/sag/feel for strike detection. I was skeptical about all of this too, but decided to try it. I personally have seen an enormous increase in landed fish when fishing this way. On a super shoestring budget, you could get started w/ a 9' rod if you have one, and just the sighter material and some maxima chameleon. I'm using an Orvis clearwater 10' rod now, but I started with what I had.
@justinhardesty5131

sadly mistaken my friend. if anything, the line, leader and flies used can be cheaper. it's just if you're willing to buy a rod specific to that style... Europeans (the czech and polish) have been doing this for quite some time now. Just because it's new in the states, doesn't mean it's a scheme to sell more equipment..

Stop taking the fish out of the water - you are destroying your prey by doing that - leave them in the net for the picture - don’t handle the fish! Imagine all those fish gasping in the air in guides sites, store bulletin boards, magazines - give them a break !
@1148bucknasty
@1148bucknasty 4 жыл бұрын
You can still safely handle them with wet hands and speedy releases. If you're that concerned about bothering fish, you might want to keep the rod at home.
