Love to see you guys reacting to this. The underlying story is pretty sad, he lost both his parents before he turned 13 and had promised his dad he'd be in Eurovision someday. So this is him completing the promise. And he didn't change his style or vibe for anyone.

the story behind the song is harder than most people think. When Joost was little he always watched the Eurovision Song Contest with his parents. Once when they were watching he said "one day I'm going to stand there too" and he did. Unfortunately his parents won't be there because when he was 12 his father died and a year later his mother also died. In the lyrics he also calls the song "papaoutai" (daddy where are you). Explanation of the ending part. Joost's father told Joost when he was very young. That borders are made by people. And that they don't really exist. He says he misses his father and tells his father that he listened to him. It is happy music but hard lyrics.

You can travel freely in a Europe w/o borders but the pain of the loss of loved ones travels with you. Follow your dreams and make the ones you love proud. Carry the memories with you but also their lessons. Joost is no joke he is a survivor right through the pain to party on the eurovision stage.

papa means dad in Dutch. Europapa is dedicated to his dad which passed away due to cancer. He was just a little kid 12 years old. His mom died a year later due to a cardiac arrest. Writing songs is like a therapy to dedicate songs mostly to his parents. His father give him the mindset that there are no borders. Borders are just invented by people so dare to think without limits. why don't you invent your own world. If you want to know more about Joost Klein you should give Florida 2009 a shot and Wachtmuziek. Both are in Dutch but there are lyrics for you can translate in English. It gives a better understanding who he is.

As a Belgian i am schoked to see you drink la chouffe in a glass of delirium tremens.... we call that a sin LOL. But impressed with the glass collection in the back (the kwak glass is very hard to get). The event is in may 7 and 9 are the semi finals and 11 is the grand final. By the way ask your inlaws for a better translation then the youtube one. There are so many different levels to view the lyrics in dutch. You have to be fluent to understand them all and the references he makes. It is a catchy song so even if you don't understand everything it is nice, but when you understand it completly it is a masterpiece. I hope my country will give him 12points.

his song is a tribute to his father / Parents who passed away. Europa in Dutch means Europe. Pa or Papa means dad. His dad once told him the world has no “Grenzen” which could be translated to both borders (Borders are a man made concept) or limitations (Many people create their own limitations in their own mind). This life lesson inspired him to have keep having an open view on the world and live his life to the fullest without putting limitations on himself. After his parents died he carried a lot of pain with him. No matter where on earth he was (Germany, Italy), whatever food he would eat (Escargots in France, Fish and chips in UK, Paella in Spain), he still carries this pain with him. In the end nobody but himself could deal with this pain and he himself must find peace with his losses. Only going through the grief and finding inner peace would put a end to this suffering. This song tells the story of him as an orphan trying to do exactly that. Him creating this song was a huge part of this process. The line with Stromae / papaoute (which Translates to: Dad where are you), is followed with the words about how he wants his parents to be proud of him. He used to watch Eurovision with his parents and told them one day he would be there performing. Which is what he now did. The burning at the end is his way of (trying to) say goodbye to the burning pain of loosing his parents. Joost said about this: "Sometimes you have to let go of the things that are most precious to you. Where one door closes, many opportunities present itself. Mum and Dad, you will always be there for me, but I can't carry this pain forever."

I like you for reviewing this crazy song. Many years ago, Gina G got famous with the song "Just a little bit", so it's easy to forget that the Dutch song of that year, "Maxine & Franklin Brown - De eerste keer" ended just 1 point higher. But even more amazing in that year is several songs ending in the same ball park, then a forty point gap and then the song "Eimear Quinn - The Voice". I only bought 2 singles in my life and this is one of them.

It is a true work of art, it is filled with so many hidden gems that go unnoticed, especially for those who aren't Dutch. But in short, Papa is daddy in Dutch, and all the musical transitions go from the old-school house, dance, and EDM to Gabber and New Kids "Hey Jonguh", the Red Bull outfit a.m.m. (the referrals are obvious imho but I'm Dutch). It is a work of art! And I'm proud of him. But I think the backstory is so important to really understand it that might be the only downside, perhaps he will have something up his sleeve?! Perhaps he will have an English version for the EVSC?! Can't wait to see it live on stage at the EVSC :)

pronounce name as : yoast.. I never was much into techno etc (too old for that perhaps and basically hard rock/prog rock when I grw up) and certainly never thought Gabber (5:50 inw, pretty much Dutch cultural hard core) would catch me like it did!! Apart from that I think it's so carefully crafted production wise! Bloody catchy tune, make it a European anthem. Then the lyrics, has so many layers and more meaning than meets the eye. In other comments much will be explained I noticed. On the surface it sounds so happy but hidden deep inside is the pain and grief of loss (papa, well also mama) and the final scene could represent burning the pain in order to be able to carry on... many ways to look at it. I wonder how Joost (yoast) will bring all this across on stage. Perhaps he should have subtitles on backdrop screen.....

At first, I didn't grasp the profound meaning, but upon closer inspection, the song reveals a deeper understanding. Clues within the lyrics suggest that the song is a tribute to the artist's parents, particularly his father. The phrase "Euro papa" carries significant weight, signifying a promise the artist made to his father before his passing - a commitment to one day grace the stage of the European Song Festival.

totally off topic, but guys I must applaud you for your choice of beer! Drinking Delerium, next to two bottles of Chouffe and a whole closet full of special glasses in the background. First time watching any of your videos and 10 seconds in you already got my thumbs up!

It's not Kinderdijk, I live there nearby. Can't confirm if this is near his place of birth in Friesland, but its definitely not Kinderdijk. Your pronunciation of Joost was exceptionally good though! No English native speaker seems to get that right directly!!

the lyrics is so fucking strong. I am in germany bit I am alone, I am in italy but still it hurts, papaoutai means dad where are you. he traveled europe but not with his parents as they died when he was only 13. and papa obviously means dad in dutch.

The song is typical of the Netherlands. It is in Dutch, a music genre, the music video features mills and stunning Dutch landscapes. Eurovision is an emotional affair for Joost. As a child, he watched it together with his parents. "Parents, one day I'm going to be on Eurovision stage" and he did. Unfortunately, his parents died when he was a child. This song is dedicated to his late father. That's why it's called EUROPAPA. The part in the song “I'm in Germany, but I'm so alone. I'm in Italy, but I still feel the pain, etc.", I feel it's directed at his parents... Joost loved his parents and still does. His lyrics are mostly very deep, but the melody is happy, danceable and the clips of his song are presented in a fun way. At the hardcore part in the car is one of the biggest hardcore DJ's from the Netherlands Paul Elstak

Please note, that not just the lyrics are about Europe, but also one of the female dancers (gabber sequence) is wearing the colors of Ukraine (yellow, blue). This song is funny and serious altogether.

Love it that you are drinking Belgian beer! but in Belgium it is a crime to drink from another glass that doesn't belong to the beer. Almost every good Ale/Beer has its own Glass to get the right flavour of that specific beer!

The Eurovision Song Contest will be broadcast live via KZbin. Just like recently at the Grammys. This year it will be organized in Malmo, Sweden. Because last year Loreen won. There are rumors, although it has also been denied, that ABBA will perform as an interval act. Exactly 50 years after they won in 1974 with 'Waterloo'. The rest is history. ABBA is from Sweden! And let Israel win! Greetings from the Netherlands
