Those who were able to be there in person are unlikely ever to forget the occasion. Whenever Claudia Abbado conducts Mahler, especially when he is at the head of his own Lucerne Festival Orchestra, the whole is more than just the sum of its parts thanks to a process that one is tempted to call magical. The present live recording of an acclaimed performance of Mahler's Third Symphony at Lucerne's Culture and Convention Centre on 19 August 2007 provides lasting proof of this and allows us to see that with Abbado ecstasy is never achieved at the expense of musical and rhetorical clarity: a powerful emotional charge is held in check by calm contemplation. Never for a moment does Abbado give undue emphasis to subjective mawkishness or an overtly theatrical sense of worldweariness: Abbado's Mahler is precisely calculated and at the same time intuitively felt.
The musicians of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra were meeting for the Orth time when they assembled in Lucerne in the summer of 2007. Among them were not only a number of distinguished soloists but also experienced principals from the world's foremost orchestras: the leaders were Kolja Blacher and Sebastian Breuninger, while the rank-and-file violin sec-tion behind them included players of the eminence of Mirijam Contzen and llya Gringolts. The cellos ware led by Jens Peter Maintz and Natalia Gutman sitting alongside Valentin Erben of the Alban Berg Quartett and Clemens Hagen, whose sister, Veronika, was a member of the viola section under Wolfram Christ and Diemut Poppen. The woodwind section in-cluded the flautist Jacques Zoon and the ciarinettist Sabine Meyer, while prominent among the brass was the trumpeter Reinhold Friedrich.
All the plavers are friendly with one another es weil as sharing a special affinity for chamber music, which famously makes the greatest demands in terms ofthe need to listen closely to one's colleagues. And it is here thatthis orchestra is unique, a uniqueness clear from the present performance. The large concert hell seerned literally to vibrate with psychic energy, and the intensity with which the musicians responded to even the tiniest fluctuations in the music reached the point where all the players seemed to surpass themselves. "The goal is clear and is shared by all the participants," wrote the critic ofthe Neue ZürcherZeitung; "it seems that in advancing towards this goal, the players achieve a high degree of individual responsibility, while the conductor encourages each and every one ofthem ... to realize his or her potential in orderto benefitthe collective- an example of successful leadership in a highly specialized context. As such, this is more or less the opposite of what people normally assume to be the job of a conductor. What we saw here was emphatically not self-promotion ata stroke butthe experience that something special arises only when people have space in which to develop."
Abbado first recorded Mahler's Third Symphony in 1980, following it up with a second recording in 1999, both of them demonstrating the conductor's particular affinity with the work. His unerring feel tor the narrative structures of this rich and varied score finds expression in an extraordinary sensitivity, aliowing hirn to respond with particular vividnessto a workthat deals with nothing lass than the origins ofthe universe. As I know all Mahlers works Im trying to find a new favourite composer. I tried Bethoven, Bruckner, but noone can really compare to Mahler :( Any thoughts?

@@krzem3532 From my experience of listening to wide range of symphonies from different composers, mahler is still number one for me. But my sympathies definetly go to Sibelius, Bruckner (especially his 7th), Brahms, Shostakovich,Schubert,Schumann,Rachmanjnoff and to delightful Tchaikovsky. His 6th symphony, especially the final movement of it, is the tragedic masterpiece itself. Definetly recommend symphonies of above-mentioned composers. Henrik Gorecki is also someone i am really fond of. If you are interested, i could point out favourite symphonies of those composers.

Incredible performance by Abbado… It’srevealing that the audience shares the emotion, as it lets a few seconds of silence, in communion with the conductor, after the symphony ends. It feels so right. Many times you wish that the applause wouldn’t start so soon… As it is so true that for Mozart, Mahler and many others, the silence that follows still belongs to them.

I have loved this work for 45 years- I spent my pocket money on the full score when I was 16 years old- so I thought I knew this wondrous symphony inside out, but Abbado's performance here is a revelation to me. I am stunned that he and the marvellous players make me hear every bar of this great score as if for the first time. There is the deepest level of understanding and internal relaxation here that eludes many performances. The sprawling first movement can feel so fragmented and episodic unless there is a master in control who has a long- range sense of the structure. I salute the late, great Claudio Abbado and the superb soloists known collectively as The Lucerne Festival Orchestra.

+Paul Barrett I think I bought the score when I was a little older than 16, but it took me many years to fully appreciate it. I got the box recording of Mahler's symphonies by Solti and the CSO, and honestly I think it disappoints. As some people/critics have said, he makes it sound too much like Beethoven. Quote: "... that eludes most conductors, who often make the score sound frequently brash and tense, especially in the sprawling first movement, which can feel so fragmented and episode unless there is a master in control who has a long- range sense of the structure." I couldn't agree more, that is a perfect description of how Solti took it in my estimation. I have mixed feelings on Bernstein's performances as well. I've only heard the first 9 minutes of this video, but so far it is absolutely fantastic. As you say, Abbado has a very deep understanding of the work, well except for the harsh and blaring trombones just after the opening fanfare, I think the sound should be softer and more rounded like Bernard Haitink takes it. But with the recapitulation at 25 minutes in it is perfect, the sound of the trombones, not too harsh, but still with an edge and some bite to it, a perfectly brazen tone. Listening to the horn(or was it the trombone solo) it's just beautiful. I cannot wait to hear the grand and rousing finale of the first movement. This is indeed a great performance, and I have no further criticisms as of 16 minutes in, except that it may be a bit too deliberate for me in some places, but this is rather minor nitpicking on my part, and overall the performance is very good. The dynamics are wonderful, the "lyrical" tunes are played with wonder and delicately but not too sweetly, with just the right amount of accent and emphasis on certain notes, and there is still good driving energy and tension to be heard as well. At this point all I can say is that it's truly a great performance, one of the best I have had the privilege of hearing.

One thing I have reflected on when listening to Mahlers music. You can never, absolutely never, have Mahler as background music. It affects you too much, it requires your attention. I also adore Haydn but for other reasons. You can play Haydn as background music but for sure not Mahler. Thanks for uploading, a master-piece of music, performance and recording!

His majesty Claudio Abbado memorized entire notes of this extra vanganza work for 100minutes and conducted every note in right ways for melody, tempo, size, rythm, volume, articulations, and ways of expression in complete ways. Tempo in performing Mahler is very important. Too slow or too fast can wreck the whole thing. Not so with the high priest of Mahler, Claudio Abbado. The tempos always feel spot on. I did not get Mahler at first (bought a Kubelik box set but not very impressed and found it a bit boring). One day i decided to pick up Mahler from Bruno Walter's box and listen to it actively....WOW. This person must have suffered the hardest things in life. I like the darkness, the love stories and the enlightened moments in Mahler's music. Beside Abbado as everyone else has mentioned, I think the musicians in this orchestra are truely amazing, especially the brass. I thank all musicians and the channel to share this beautiful music with us.

My first introduction to Mahler was Abbado's 2nd with Lucerne Festival. At 16 it was already my favorite piece of classical music. I'm 31 now, and for years, I've been trying to get into Mahler, listening mainly to Bernstein and Fischer. Qui siamo di fronte alla voce dell'Altissimo che risponde all'uomo, creatura dilaniata per sua stessa natura. Dalla morte del bambino (Fra Martino al minore) metafora della fine dell'infanzia, agli ammonimenti del lied di mezzanotte, la filosofia, alla fede dubbiosa di Pietro che rinnega il Cristo, e piange amaramente, fino alla redenzione finale e all'amore del Padre Celeste. Over a lifetime of listening to music, of every genre, I come to the realisation that Mahler speaks to very depths of what it is to be human. Sua Maestà Claudio Abbado! Ho avuto il grande privilegio di sentirlo all'Auditorium Renzo Piano. Ha diretto Bruckner con la orchestra di Losanna. Già molto malato, scavato in volto, ma divinamente bravo. Ci ha fatto piangere. Ad un certo momento ha interrotto la direzione e ha chiamato il giovane Gustavo Dudamel, cresciuto alla scuola di Aubreu, gli ha consegnato la bacchetta e il concerto è stato terminato dal direttore Venezuelano.

This is a remarkable performance. This is an orchestra put together from some of the greatest soloists and chamber music players in the world. And they play like a chamber ensemble of 108 players, intensely listening to each other. They play with an intense commitment to Mahler's music as if that composer's music were, in the words of Norman Lebrecht, "a matter of life and death." Add to that what appears to be a great affection and even love for the renowned Mahler conductor Claudio Abbado on the part of the orchestra, and you have what I think is the best performance of this epic work ever.

That a truly great soloist like the cello virtuoso Natalia Gutman would unfailingly turn up to play in the LFO, often for no pay, says a lot for Claudio Abbado and the love and esteem in which he was held. Also, she appears to be sight-reading, which I for one wouldn't attempt in a work like this!

Every human person has the ability to feel and enjoy. What brings pleasure and joy? Of course it's some beauty. The world around us is created so wonderful and beautiful! And a person’s duty is to live through himself everything that he sees around him. And talk about your experiences and to share them through the realization of your talents. BUT there is a great temptation to imagine yourself as omnipotent. And then instead of creative power and beauty comes anger, aggression and death… A human person MUST conquer this within himself! Such a fantastic performance of perhaps the best symphony ever written. I am glad I was able to experience it live with Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Andrew Litton a few years ago. ?? Not remarkable at all. All orchestral players play from the score. This is not sight-reading, it is score-reading. Maestros often memorize the score; they conduct the piece many times more than the players play it, and this Festival orchestra is no exception. Yes, it's a great performance, but not because Abbado memorizes and the players don't.

There's nothing I can pick apart here. It is absolute perfection. Larssen is the perfect Mahler tone. The phrasing was so thoughtful, none of it robotic. Every second breathed. This is the finest performance of any Mahler that I know of. "...all joy seeks eternity--seeks deep, deep eternity." RIP Abbado, you were a true gift.

I have this symphony on CD but it helps so much to appreciate it being able to see which parts of the orchestra are playing and how it all fits together. it means I listen to the music on a whole different level. I am not an expert in classical music but this performance seems to me especially fine. I feel an enormous sense of privelege listening to this and feeling Mahler's links to composers in the past. Especially in my opinion Beethoven though I suspect many others feel this link too.

Classical music videos don't get any better than this. I totally agree with Paul Barrett below, and I have known this work for almost as many years. This has the feel of a truly memorable event and it must have been wonderful to be there. This video, though, is the next best thing and what a fantastic job the sound engineers have done to bring this incredible orchestra into our homes. There is another really good performance of this work on here by the Frankfurt Radio Symphony which also sounds great, but it's marred by below-par camera work which is frequently distracting. There is also an interval after the first movement, which I've never seen happen anywhere else. Anyway, no camera problems here, so well done to the video director, too! I see there are other Lucerne Abbado/Mahler symphonies on here from other years which I'll certainly be investigating.
