The composer Claude Debussy was born in St. Germain-en-Laye, a few miles outside Paris, in 1862. While a pupil at the Conservatoire, he composed music that did not conform to the theory of the times. He contradicted his teachers by claiming that pleasure was the only valid rule of music, and that music could not be learned. Debussy was to become one of the greatest French composers, creating works which threw open entirely new musical horizons. This fascinating documentary gives deep insights into the life and work of Claude Debussy based on reports by those who encountered the great composer. Including Debussy's Childrens Corner played by Zoltán Kocsis. A film by Georges Gachot.

The title of this video don’t seems to show that Debussy studied since childhood. Without the technique and hours of dedication it would be impossible to him to develop such compositions. Anyway, you gotta study and learn to achieve your own potential

Exactly, it's like saying you can't learn to play in time, or to paint. Pretentious nonsense.

I think his words were misunderstood. He meant that the kind of creativity he had inside could not be learned through the musical methods of that time nor he should lose much time with it because he was heading in a different direction .At least this is my interpretation.

Very interesting comment by Ravel about the perfection of The Faune. I fully agree - and I would also add Reverie to that small class of Debussy compositions that exhibits exactly that perfection.

In fact, Debussy hated this work. According to him, he wrote it to make money quickly. And I can understand it - while you've been trying to surpass yourself for years and putting your whole soul into your new works, many people know you only from one piano piece that you didn't even try to work on.

I get what Ravel was saying. I live the songs Pavane for a dead princess by Ravel, and Reverie by Debussy. The two pieces have musical similarities and evoke likewise feelings, Reverie clearly has better development than Pavabe, which has some less perfect transitions. And while both composers tried to write their songs more freeform than in the romantic period, Debussy’s music, as a whole continuous idea, feels truly natural. Like the song was meant to exists. Never an underdeveloped or awkward moment.

Thats funny, I find more awkward moments as a whole in Debussy's music than Ravel's but I agree that Debussy has more "perfect" pieces

It's his only piece that I feel that I don't understand. Of course it's in French, but that's not all. It's very challenging, partly because Opera is a very different art form than orchestral music, or chamber music, but also because it is so revolutionary. I guess you could say I'm stunned.

I love Mozart, I truly do, my mind connects with his true genius as it does VERY slightly less with Beethoven, Bach, Chopin, & Brahms BUT my heart & my SOUL ONLY connects with Debussy. Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune & Claire the Lune may truly be the only perfect pieces of music in human history in my humble opinion.I am glad I am NOT the only Debussy fan, as even the great man Ravel was a fan himself!
