Good observation, and in fact, a piano IS a harp (either upright or lying on it's side-- but with built-in hammers/strikers that substitute for fingers on the strings. The nuances available on harp are stunning. Gives us so much musical oxygen.

Try to imagine the whole process from start to finish of what it took to get us to this point. Somebody , many centuries ago conceived & created the Harp. It then must have taken years to work out the harmony of the strings in order to make it sound so wonderful . We then learned to write & read music, which was phenomenal. After all of this, we needed an inspired composer such as Debussy to produce this masterpiece. Finally, we have a beautiful player who has practiced for years to bring this incredibly emotional & heavenly sound to our ears. Incredible..💚

Why see it as a "progress-process" to culminate in something beautiful? There is nothing wrong with Medieval and Renaissance harps, they are beautiful per se - sound wise included - and not merely "a step into something greater". It's not about being better or worse.... It's simply different.

Music needed to be written & then played by the musicians (process). At no point did I say there was anything wrong with Medieval & Renaissance harps. The two arabasques are written mainly in a diatonic way, and their rather linear writing makes their transcription to the harp easy. This interpretation is so nice that the two arabesques seem to have been directly written for the harp. A very nice moment of music with these charming youth compositions of Debussy.

Well the precursor to the piano is the harpsichord and it's basically a vertical harp that has keys instead. So some piano music can work well for the harp.

What kept me going, and still does, apart from the fact that I am reeeeally stubborn, is that all of life has a reason and purpose. I tell myself something good will come out of this, whether it's understanding of myself or that my experience will help someone else when I come out the other side. Nothing we ever do in our lives is a waste, not one thing. If our experiences nearly destroy us, what we learn from it will surely save someone else's life, purely because we came through and helping someone through similar is what it is about. Using our experience may take years but it is never a waste. I will tell you something, if we were not strong enough, we wouldn't have had that experience. And how we come out the other side may seem obvious to us but not to others, so this life is a school in an unstructured kind of a way. Knowledge cannot always be read from a book. I really hope this helps you, because believe me, someday the rewards you will receive will be awesome. Just know that a kind word or action, doesn't have to be a big thing, maybe just a smile, will light up someone else's world. I understand that the first thought is why me? Instead say, ok, bring it on, I will find a way through. Whatever is happening to you it may be your job to succeed so that you can pass on that knowledge to someone who may not have your mindset, not be as strong as you. Tuning any instrument with a large number of strings is always an exercise in patience. :) Pianos and organs are the only thing more difficult than the harp.

Carolyn well most days it doesn’t go out of time too much but every so often it gets wayyyy off. Especially with weird weather changes! How often to you tune in the south? I’m in the midwest

@@audreyh5981 I tune basically every time I sit down with the harp, which is usually more than once a day. On humid days (and we have lots of very humid days) I'll need to tune in the middle of practice too because humidity changes throughout the day. For performances you have to be even more dilligent. The main issues are the gut strings, as I'm sure you know. But also I have an older harp that apparently must have an issue with wood warping with humidity, because the bass wires and even the nylon can do funky things.
