You've inspired me to approach this game with RP in mind instead of just looking up a max DPS build guide and just bulldozing through everything like I usually do. Maybe it's not going to be for me, but considering I've never played any D&D, this game seems like a good first step to trying it out. Thanks for the video!

Oh here's something I've not seen anyone mention. Old school D&D was all about every encounter potentially immediately murdering your shiny new character, & modern D&D is all about the players winning absolutely everything (which I hate & find incredibly boring), so does BG3 let you fully disengage & run away from a fight to get out of combat, or are you stuck there (having to reload a save) once things go bad?
@00shmee Жыл бұрын
These are great tips, the only thing I would clarify on the long rest thing is to double check that you don't have any quests with a limited number of 'days' in them. If the event happens in three days, that is three long rests. Same with an event early on that happens the 'the next morning' AKA you have to make a choice before the long rest. Other than that, if there isn't a time limit, rest as long as and whenever you want.

First time D&D player here. There are many things that make me excited, including the afore mentioned avoidance of min maxing in favor of RP. One thing I am not liking so far is the camp. I understand that you’re saying that it gives opportunities for social interaction, but it seems stressful and perhaps Even boring to have to go to camp. Every time I’ve expended a few spells.

Nice vid; I am VERY much looking forward to this game! Just to discuss some of the points, my D&D experience is pretty much entirely from CRPGs like BG1 and BG2 for example. I was... okay... at them but each battle was a chaotic mill and I would hope my party would come out on top. In real time with pause, Which those games were, I had no real sense about whether my rogue or cleric was doing anything worthwhile in combat for example. It was only when I played Temple of Elemental Evil, with its turn-based mode, that I learned how to actually use tactics and actually play. I expect BG3 will do an even better job in communicating these things to the player. Also, great point that you should just pick what seems interesting, and your char will never be able to do anything. The game will allow you to party up with 3 other chars, to ensure that your party should hopefully have all the versatility you need.

The tips on saving and going with the flow are a little contradictory 😅
@mari-anne Жыл бұрын
I think it's up to each person to decide what's worth reloading a save for and what's not. personally, if I fail a dice roll somewhere in the wild, I just go with it, but if I'm romancing a person and I do smth they really don't like, I might reload a save. also if I misclick or do something really stupid in a big battle, I might reload to a turn before that so that i wouldn't have to replay the whole battle once again. so it's different for everyone but saving often in such a huge long game is never a bad idea.
@Magmakojote Жыл бұрын
@@mari-anne And sometimes you are just unlucky and get wiped during the first turn in combat. Redoing the encounter then is fine, but if you have a late save you might have to redo other encounters before and that is simply not fun.

@@Magmakojote this was me during the githyanki fight with my squishy sorcerer lol couldn't do a surprise round with laezel there but didn't want to leave her behind cause I wanted the lore and convo. so took a lot of luck to not be wiped out on the 1st turn haha
@ArcaneZippity Жыл бұрын
I think when she spoke about going with the flow, it was more to do with story outcomes, as a suggestion... D&D as a Table Top game RPG, has always been about random chance... That randomness adds flavor to situations, because outcomes are not guaranteed in life, so that is represented in a game mechanic by having a target number, rolling a dice, adding modifiers that represent your abilities and kills, and seeing if you are successful, or if it just doesn't work out... Even failure can lead down fun and interesting paths in a game like D&D and therefore BG3... But I think she's aware that some folks may just want to win all the time, so that is where the save often suggestion comes into play... As to saving a lot, that suggestion is great, mostly because of failed outcomes, sometimes coming back to haunt a player, and not in a fun way... If you've been playing for 4 hours straight, and the last auto-save was 1.5 hours ago... And you are in a combat encounter, where you're entire party was killed, it would be completely frustrating to many folks, having to revert to a save from 1.5 hours ago... Having to go through all that, 1.5 hours of content, all over again, might be furiously annoying... So, using Quicksave, as often as you can remember to do it, is a good thing... As a broader point, when she recommends just generally saving often, regardless of your playstyle, she's aware that some folks love to scum save everything rather than go with the flow... That doesn't invalidate her original suggestion, or mean she's contradicting that suggestion... Saving often can save you time in the long run, for lots of different reasons... It's a safe suggestion, regardless of your playstyle...

Excellent point about not worrying over having all the best stats because the perfect character doesn't exist. I wish Larian had kept that in mind before they made changes to the ability score system. Now I can easily make a gnome barbarian that's every bit as strong as a tiefling, which is stupid.
@Magmakojote Жыл бұрын
I understand that it seems weird for the physical abilities, but why should certain races be inherently smarter? Or more wise? Or more charismatic? It doesn't make much sense and limits the player quite a lot in my opinion.
@MyNameIsBucket Жыл бұрын
@@Magmakojote No, it doesn't. Absolutely nothing is stopping a player from making a half-orc wizard except their own spoiled rottenness stomping their little feet at not being as good as a high elf wizard. The genre is plagued with min-maxing brats when it SHOULD BE people who see a suboptimal build as a challenge or a roleplaying opporunity.

every race can be any class, no restrictions
@ArcaneZippity Жыл бұрын
You've probably had lots of experience in MMORPG's, both Asian and Western Market (looking at you WoW), where some classes are gender and/or race locked... D&D is very open, so therefore BG3 is open... Any Race/Sex can play any class... On release, while races do have some features unique to them, in BG3 the dev's have opted to go with the standardized Racial Stat Bonuses, that WotC plans for the next version of D&D (One D&D), in order to even out choices (as far as numbers are concerned), so folks don't feel as limited on their race to class choices, especially if min-maxing is your thing... There is a broader focus on Role Playing both in choices and in game play... So' if you want to be a Half Orc Monk, go for it, or perhaps Halfing is your jam, go for it, etcetera and so on...

Does anyone know if you can customize the origin character like in DOS2. I changed their classes and how they looked
@ArcaneZippity Жыл бұрын
Let's approach that question in two ways... At character creation, if you choose to play a Origin character you can select whatever class/skills/stats/etc that you want to go with... The only things you can't change are the race and appearance... When not playing an Origin character as your main toon, Origin companions can be resepecced, only after you have unlocked the NPC that does that... So you can change most things from level 1 up, but their Race and Appearance are locked... Another caveat, is that if you do change a companions class beyond what it defaults as, the story/cutscenes/cinematics involving the companions, will not be altered by the respec... They will playout as though the companion had the original class it started with... Hope that helps answer your question...

Some profound irony in first saying "there's no wrong way to play the game, do whatever you want!" then immediately saying "but if you're a filthy min-maxer you will never have fun" "The way I play is the only way you should play" is one of the worst possible messages to send to RPG newcomers

@@eurogamer"The drive to strategically create a character Designed to win - also known as min/maxing - is understandable, (...) but all it'll really do in the long run is stress you out. (...) The goal is not to win." Literally your words. It's not a good idea to assume why people play an RPG, different players play the game for different reasons. That is, in fact, the whole point of the game. There are tables run by groups whose whole enjoyment is playing the game with optimized characters. Some people will play for the fantasy RP, some for the multiplayer with friends, some for single player story with a premade origin and some for optimizing mechanics on tactician. All are valid and none are wrong or 'going to stress you out'. That should have been the message in the video. But it wasn't. There was a very clear message of "don't even bother doing these things that I wouldn't do, you won't like them because I don't like them". That's not a good message to send new players.
