September + October 2023 - Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, Switzerland - two weeks through Europe!
For where to eat and details on what we saw - individual location videos coming in January!
Stop One: Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany! We stayed at Aloft near the festival. Note: Don’t take a bag! Tip: when you go in a tent, look for a server that does not have their hands full and ask where you can sit when you don’t have an Oktoberfest table reservation. They will get you a spot and sometimes that spot will be at a table in the reserved section where you get to hang out and make friends with a lot of locals! Don’t forget to explore a bit more of the historic Munich while you are there.
Stop Two: We took the train (reserved seats from RailEurope app - the one I like to use the best even when we couldn’t read or translate the tickets… oops) with no stops from Munich to Vienna, Austria. We stayed two nights in Vienna in an historic building (with a plaque that reads that it was the apartment of Mozart’s first mistress) in the downtown area. What a beautiful and historic town. The cobblestone roads and larger-than-life marble statues: it was like taking a stroll in the past. Highlights: Mozart’s Home, St Stephen’s Cathedral, The Anker Clock, Sisi Museum, and The Austrian National Library.
Stop Three: We got our first MyDayTrip private car to pick us up at our Airbnb and drop us at our next town - with a stop at Aggstein Castle along the way. Highly recommend MyDayTrip for when a train seems like too much and you want to see more along the way. Then we made it to our home for the next few nights - Hallstatt, Austria. An amazing lakeside town that is so charming it’s become a day trip for many tourists. However, staying there was amazing - we got an early rise to the top of the mountain, late electric boat rides, and the town almost to ourselves during parts of the day. We stayed at Steewirt Zauner. Additional Highlight: Charnel (skull house) House
Stop Four: Another MyDayTrip private car to take us to Innsbruck, Austria. A funky and artsy town with a beautiful medieval area and a gorgeous Mountain View. We stayed at the quirky Nala Individuelhotel and spent our time watching a Tiroler Abend show, exploring the streets, taking the tram up to the Alpine Zoo, then the air tram further up to the Nordkette Mountain Range. We also visited some local breweries and had some amazing food.
Stop Five: MyDayTrip car to a new country! With a few days in Vaduz, Liechtenstein! We climbed up to the castle where the prince still lives, then drank wine from the Prince’s winery, checked out a brewery, watched cows walking down the street, and ultimately had a lovely time. We stayed at the Landhaus am Giessen - which was a great little hotel right in the main town area. It was easy to get around with taxi, bus, and walking.
Stop Six: Our last MyDayTrip car ride to our next new country, Switzerland! We only had one night in St. Moritz Switzerland but it was full of walking around the lake, finding the leaning tower of St Moritz, eating, and locating the “city escalator” to make the steep climb up the hill to the town very easy. We staying in the gorgeous Hotel Waldhaus am See with a beautiful view of the lake.
Stop Seven: Glacier Express all day train to Zermatt. What a beautiful train ride - even with no snow. We had a meal on the train which was pre-paid. Reminder that you have “two tickets” - one for reservation which you need to order as soon as you have your date and then separately you also need to get a ticket a month out from the train ride. When we got to Zermatt, we rode in one of the electric taxis to our Airbnb - an original chalet house in the old town and so charming. We spent three nights and days exploring - riding up to the Matterhorn Glacier Lookout, walking through the gorge, exploring town, and more.
Stop Eight: We took the train (with an interchange) to Zurich, Switzerland. We visited a local brewery and explored downtown and old town in Zurich. Then we had a TourByLocals day trip out to see the Aare Gorge as well as some other amazing sights. We stayed at the 25hour hotel Langstrasse. Overall the hotel and area were nice - but note that while this hotel/neighborhood have the benefit of being close to the train station - it was a heavy “party” area until about 5am. This was our last new stop before heading back to Munich on the train (direct) and flying out after a night at the beautiful Hilton at the Munich Airport.
