William Vollmann is my favorite author and he can be very rewarding but he definitely can be challenging as you discuss. If you ever feel up for giving him another look, check out his Seven Dreams series.

Sounds like the best kind of book, Alexander: engages things you know and gets you out to learn more about the world. I finally “got” EoTS after reading the Pacific Trilogy 😂

First off, this is a fantastic video series and look forward to more of these, thanks for making them. Have you read Timothy Snyder's Bloodlands? If not I'd highly reccomend having a look.

It’s a really tough read (I had to put it down several times and walk away), but well worth it.

Hooked me when you said Shostakovich was a central character.

Hey there is there a game about Operation Rhine. The happenings in May 1941 and the saga of sinking The Bismarck? Cheers.

PS - Lee Dixon played for Arsenal FC ,over 450 times ,England 22 times and others . I thought he may have played for Southampton ,but he played in the red & white stripes of Stoke City . He was a hero of mine - a great defensive ' General ' and useful offensively too . Thanks for today's video .

Interesting book. Democracy Under Siege and Rise of Totalitarianism are the games for this. And very good games they are.
