haha right...I think playing LoRT really helped. While different games with very different resource and combat systems, the stat lines per mana are pretty similar. LoRT is MTG if MTG had auto lands and every creature had vigilance and haste. But YuGiOh feels like a fundamentally different way of having a creature centric TCG.

@@mattm7798 My favorite way to describe yugioh is imagine you just played 4 turns each in 2 turns instead. It's a back and forth battle for board control and supremacy most of the time. This happens in other games, but you also spend like 4 turns doing basically minimal interactions (which is exactly how a yugioh turn starts out doing, effectively).
@gaugea

@@mattm7798 yeah 100%. old yugioh was *sorta* reminiscent of the pace of modern magic, but back then the design was so simple and the strategies so underdeveloped that no matter what era of yugioh you played, it is inevitably very difficult to transfer your game knowledge to magic. LoR and HS are muuuuch much more similar in comparison and a lot of the ways you would evaluate card strength in those games carry over almost entirely to mtg, with only some minor differences like color diversity and identity.

Maybe having constructed or draft with non magic pros would be good to hear they thought process. It could be a whole tournament event. Film video for each deck construction and each match + maybe even prizes at the end. Or having certain pool of cards and guest having to figure out how to build the best deck out of that pool.

Magic pros are right to be skeptical of any big creature that doesn't do something the turn it drops until they can actually test it in the meta. Rhino at least always gets its ETB off. It's just that Sheoldred is insane if she sticks and, being a 4 mana 4/5, dodges enough cheap removal spells to be worth playing. Still, she's best when you've used cheaper threats and discard to ensure she gets time on the board.

Yup. I'd love to see players from as many other card games as possible show up here. I still think that 1 out of the 5 cards should be an intentional "bait" card that sees play in fringe decks, but has never seen *widespread* play. Shuko or Cephalid Illusionist are great examples of super strong combo pieces in a top tier legacy deck, but they're awful on their own without the very specific support they have within that deck. Telling the "challenger" that there's one bait card before they start and revealing their score at the END would lead to a lot of tension where they might be second guessing previous picks, or wanting to change their evaluation as they go.

to be a guy who haven't played magic he did an impressive job figuring out the cards now here's a shot to passing those mtg effects to ygo(you tell me how good they are) - Siege Rhino: If this card is Normal or Special Summoned; inflict 300 damage to your opponent, and if you do, gain 300 Lp. If this card attacks a Defense Position monster, inflict damage to your opponent equal to this card's ATK. - prophetic Flamespeaker: This card can attack up to two times during the Battle Phase. If this card deal damage to your opponent as a result of battle: Banish 1 card from the top of your Deck; activate the following effect depending on its type. ● Monster: Special Summon it. ● Spell Card: Activate that card. ● Trap Card: Set that card on your field, and if you do, it can be activated this turn. . If this card attacks a Defense Position monster, inflict damage to your opponent equal to this card's ATK. - Vinelasher Kudzu: Each time you activate a Field Spell; place 1 counter on this card(max 5). You can remove any number of counters from this card; send a number of Spell/Trap Cards from the field to the GY equal to the number of Counters removed. (i based that last effect on the flavor text of the card) - Dolmen Gate: Monsters you control cannot be destroyed in battle, also, you take no damage from battle involving those monsters this turn, but you cannot declare an attack with those monsters during the next Battle Phase. - Sheoldred, the Apocalypse: This card cannot be destroyed in battle. Any monster that battles this card is sent to the GY at the end of the Damage Step. Each time a card is added to the hand during the Draw Phase gain 200 Lp, and if you do, inflict 200 damage to your opponent

Most of em are kinda trash in nowdays standard sadly, the flame guy might see use tho....maybe. Effects based on Life / LP is hard to translate to YGO as LP not as important there compared ro magic. Tho if u raise burn dmg of siege rhino and sheoldred, like maybe 2k for rhino and 1k for sheoldred (amd remove draw phase restrcition of sheoldred to include cards drawn by card effect), then they porb will see some use in some FTK burn strategy. Dolmen kinda eh coz nowdays they can just pop it easily. Vinelasher at most in general will be just 1-2 cards removal at most coz most decks only play 1 kind of field spell anyway, just use harpie feather duster which can remove whole opp spell trap xD.

As an MtG player since quite literally 1993, I was extremely impressed with his ability to discern how certain mechanics function and methodically think his way through to the correct response 80% of the time. I would definitely enjoy more content like this!

Consistently impressed by how well these "never played magic" TCG players asses MTG cards. It would be really fun to see a show match between 2 prominent non-MTG TCG players, have Toralf there to answer questions, give them a few decks for options. Maybe let us see their reasoning as to why they pick the deck and their comparisons. I would really enjoy that! Great video as always!

Josh obviously has a great understanding of card games. Only reason he didnt get the artifact was because its unclear how easily its removed at instant speed and can backfire.

It has always amazed me that Siege Rhino is good. A three point drain life on a creature just looks like something you play in limited. I remember being excited about playing vinelash kudzu and returning bouncelands to always be able to trigger it. This never materialized. Doloman's Gate has been good as a second reconnisance in my Isshin deck. Being able to attack with creatures that have been outclassed to continue getting combat triggers has been worth a card. This doesn't make Gate a good card, but I am glad that it has a home. Never thought of Sheoldred as a Siege Rhino. What a cool parallel to draw.

I love to see the comparison between Yugioh and Magic Knowledge in this one. Joshua did an amazing job and it really shows why he is such a good player, even over the borders of Yugioh. Resonates alot with me, coming from a Yugioh background.

Great video, I will say this about Dolmen Gate, in formats that tend to have a slower pace, like commander for example, it's not bad. But yeah, in a 1v1 scenario it does slow down aggro stuff a bit. Probably the hardest card to judge out of the bunch though.

To expand on how combat works in magic. Normally only untapped creatures can declare themselves as attackers or blockers. Creatures without vigilance tap themselves to attack. Also when It comes damage, first strike damage happens first simultaneously with any other first strike damage then normal strike damage. When a creature is dealt damage, the damage, as a state-based action (not interactable), is tallied against the creatures toughness until the end of the turn. If at any point a creatures toughness hits zero, the creature dies. This means that a creature may survive combat, but end up dying post-combat due to other cumulative card effects.

I don't know Magic at all but from the comments it seems like Josh is a genius as usual. My PVZH logic seems to apply pretty well but that is such an obscure card game lol. Rhino is ketchup mechanic and sheoldred is aloesaurus x2 + conman x2 fr fr.

One of the reasons this went so well is that Josh had an idea of what mana meant in terms of timing playing the card, and not knowing that has been unfair to other players. Consider, when someone asks about a mana cost, giving a simple explanation like the following: "Mana is usually gained by playing a land card, one per turn, so the rule of thumb is that you'll have 2 mana on turn 2, 3 mana on turn 3, etc., though some decks are built to get extra or have less."
