You forgot the part where Theseus messes up and forgets to change the sails on his ship which causes his father Aegeus to jump into the ocean and kill himself out of grief, and the Greeks remembering his death by naming the sea after him--the Aegean

Keenan Horrigan Because only Theseus would’ve known to do it. If the ship was flying the original sail, then that meant that they were coming for more tributes. If your family member tells you “if I get home before you, I’ll leave the front light on” and when you get home the lights are off, you’d assume that he or she didn’t get home before you.

And the Minoans looked back at the Egyptians like Romans looked back at the Minoans. And the Egyptians looked back at the Sumerians like the Minoans looked back at the Egyptians. And the Sumerians looked back at the antolian Gobekli tepe civilization like the Egyptians looked back at the Sumerians. And the Gobekli tepe civilization looked back at the Jericho culture like the Sumerians looked back at the Gobekli tepe civilization. Humanity and civilization is extremely old. All these people had their own cultures, heros villains entire large metropolitan cities with statues and large temples and buildings thinking they were eternal but for most of them we barely have anything left to show that they once existed. It's important to realize that even our current global civilization will once be as good as forgotten by the civilization that replaces the vacuum we have left. All the digital data recorded will eventually degrade and the surpassing more advanced civilization will look back at us like we do at the romans. Maybe they will see English as a sort of latin-like language that were the basics for all software and hardware so people still know English. Or maybe we won't even be worth knowing more about. Who knows.

As a modern native of this historic island I'm very glad you made this video. I love the history of this place. I've been to Knossos dozens of times. Here in my hometown, Herakleion, we even have a street named after Sir Evans. We would go on school trips as kids to Knossos to see the ruins and play with the peacocks. Yes, that entire area still has peacocks for some reason, you'll see them hanging around the ruins and escorting the guided tours.

The minoans are just the tip of my restlessness with history. We trace back, but the further we go, the more the mists of time obscure our vision. We know enough about the Minoans to know that they exist, and some of the stuff they made, but not what it meant, or where they came from, or what happened to them. And further beyond them, we have little to nothing comprehensible to myself.

We do know what they called themselves. " Let's talk about the Minoan name for ''Minoa'' (ie. Crete and the surrounding region controlled by Minoans in the 2nd millenium BCE). Although we continue to use Sir Evan's label for Minoans, there's little mystery anymore what we probably should be calling them: Kaptarians. Alas, even so, I don't think the name will catch on any more than Nessite for the technically incorrect term Hittite. We have Kaptara in Mari texts, the Akkadian rendering Kabturi, Egyptian *Kaftiu (kftiw) and Biblical Kapthor. All of these names point to Crete and Minoan civilization. Yet if we know this much, we must ask: What exactly was the Minoan form of the name then and what did the name mean?"

Yes, probably. Although the situation with biblical Capthor is sufficiently complex that it's not impossible that they denoted several similar-sounding locations or peoples. About the Egyptian kftiw, it could be so many things... using "a" as the vowel then kaftayawa is consistent but so are so many different vowelisations. It's a constant frustration for foreign words written in an abjad. Interestingly, at least using Lin B values into similar Lin A symbols, there isn't really a word similar to kaptara, or kaptyawa anywhere in the existing corpus... which is not necessarily saying much, the corpus is small and the reading is tenuous after all, but it's interesting to take note of that

Mary Renault wrote two amazing books based on the Theseus myth and "The King Must Die" and "The Bull From The Sea" are works of amazing complexity that should be experienced at least once in a lifetime. I read them first when I was really too young, but after decades and scores of years I find them just as wonderful to this day. The works explain the mosaics of the bull-jumpers in the arena and the sacrifice required by Crete. Anyway, should find them and read them. Love, David

21:41 Bulls *were* of religious significance in ancient Crete, but not limited to it. One of the most prominent deities worshiped in Crete (that we know of) was Zagreus, who is considered to be one of the many older iteration of Dionysus as we most commonly think of him today. Zagreus was the son of Zeus and Persephone (or Persephone and Hades in different versions of the myth) and was destined to inherit Zeus' throne as King of the Gods, a development which surprisingly Hera- and not Zeus- found particularly enraging, so she sent a bunch of Titans to murder young Zagreus under the guise of bringing him gifts. He evaded the Titans for a while by constantly shape-shifting, however he was eventually caught while he had assumed the form of a bull and he was dismembered and killed. His dismembered pieces were cooked and eaten by them, but Athena managed to salvage his heart and brought it to Zeus who resurrected Zagreus. There are also versions in which Apollo, Rhea or Demeter are the ones to collect his remains and reassemble them. It's also worth noting that this myth predates the most commonly known ones of Dionysus as the son of Zeus and Semele and has a lot in common with older iterations of the god tied way back to the Mycenaeans, while some treat Dionysus as we know him as the direct reincarnation of Zagreus, thus a continuation of him and not a separate entity. Another piece of cultural context that needs to be addressed is that Zagreus (often also referred to as "Orphic Dionysus") was a prominent deity in Orphism, a religion that focused exclusively on the worship of chthonic deities. The dismemberment of one's body (known as "sparagmos") is a reoccurring theme in Orphism- after all, that was also ultimately the fate of Orpheus after whom the religion is named. Anyway, what's important to note is that Zagreus abides by a cycle of death and rebirth, while there is also an overarching theme of madness to him which will be important later; there are myths in which young Dionysus "played" with children by dismembering them, then reassembling and bringing them back to life, an echo of his violent death in his previous life as Zagreus. At least in Crete, Zagreus was referred to as "the dying God that is reborn" and according to tradition his lifespan was tied to the land; the first flowers that spring brought were signs of his rebirth, then he grew into a playful teen in the summer, matured into an adult during autumn and finally grew old and died in winter, and so on and so forth each year. He was used to explain the seasons among other things. Anyway, that's about all the context you need to understand the bull part. A common ritual among those who worshiped Zagreus, Dionysus and/or took part in the Orphic Mysteries all across the board was to perform a sparagmos. The person would take to nature (usually mountains), often with an entourage playing loud, ceremonial music in a state of intoxication and religious ecstasy, then they were to dismember and eat an animal, which was typically a bull because this is the form that Zagreus was killed and eaten in. The purpose of reenacting the myth of Zagreus was symbolic; Zagreus/Dionysus' lifespan as a whole can be symbolically seen as the process of harvesting living grapes, crushing them and producing wine- which was an important component in the ritual as it induced a state of mind that believers thought was directly caused by Dionysus/Zagreus himself and it- along with feasting on his flesh by symbolically feasting on a bull's flesh- was a way to for a mortal to host the god's divine element in their mind and body. There are accounts of people performing this ritual in the mountains of Crete up until at least the 4th century A.C. To be clear though, while Zagreus held a special place in Crete he wasn't exclusive to us, e.g. it's said by some that the Kouros of Naxos is actually a depiction of Zagreus/Dionysus instead of Apollo. As for the bull leaping- and while this is just a theory as nothing has been factually confirmed- I'm guessing there was a similar symbolic aspect to it. To me, it seems like anyone who "bests" the bull that represents Zagreus rises above the divine element itself, an idea which may also be the meaning of the Meander as a symbol according to some- but that's a whole different can of worms to open. All that being said, I'm no historian and some of the information I've given may not be as credible. The lore of Dionysus as a whole (and so Zagreus) is extremely vast and convoluted with many different versions often conflicting with each other and requires historical, cultural and social context to make sense and appear coherent. A detailed yet comprehensive rundown was done a couple of years ago by the lovely Overly Sarcastic Productions, which I highly recommend to anyone interested in Dionysus or mythology in general: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a5PVcqVrZs6jlc0

Christ is the only one who will truly and fully satisfy you. God sent his only begotten son (Christ) to take our place on the cross ( taking the punishment we deserved because of our sin). With the crucifixion of Christ our sin has been payed for, reconnecting us with God. Three days later he rose from the grave conquering death ( giving us eternal life, only through him). We have the opportunity to be reborn this time to live freely and truly as a servant to Christ instead of being born a slave to sin. Accept Jesus into you heart, ask for forgiveness of your sins, repent (turn away from) your sins, confess your sins to God (he will forgive you) Micah 7:19 “Once again you will have compassion on us. You will trample our sins under your feet and throw them into the depths of the ocean!” Romans 8:1-2 “So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. 2 And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death.” Live wholly and lovingly for God. Put ever once of your faith in Christ and Christ alone. Peace be with you. Lord please be with this person, thank you God!

Most educational institutions present those theories like pure truth, without even pointing out how little basement beneath them and how things could, and most times for sure was, different. I understand having sometimes multiple versions of story and sometimes nothing but guesses is quite confusing for mass educational system, but if we talking real history - that's the way it must be.

Furthermore, I wonder if the palace at Knossos might be a settlement for many people, families and many professions? To Think that, what the Romans were so proud of like plumming systems, sewerage, cisterns, aqueducts, etc. The Minoans had built it already about 2000 years before.

What genetic study? How can you prove that the Dna samples are from the Minoans? They can belong to Mycanaens and therefore the study is irrelevant. Minoans didn’t seem too close to the greeks in terms of their language, wear and culture. And also, mycaneans were really different compared to the greeks of the 5th century BC. And we don’t even know for sure if the Mycanaens were greeks. They could’ve just been the famous Sea People who the greek historians tell us that they were there before the hellenic arrival.

Guess what, the same study will reveal that the same DNA feature is similar to the one found in a Celtic bone. Ethnogenesis stands for the whole gene package of a certain group of people. So how can you know what was before that? Who was the original? Who mixed who and eventually assimilated them or destroyed them? We do not know for sure. They’re an enigma, just like the Sea People. star wars fan number 1902 that could be another interesting reasearch. Is 100% of the native amerikan came from asia/pacific? If you think about it any group of humans that head west none stop in the atlantic. Either by mistake. Accident. Religious belief or whatever. Will eventualy find the amerikas Something interesting, the spanish and portuguese when in contact with native they notice that some of them look like the moors with exact same facial features. And had also the same body built (very curvy women just like moors women) So who knows maybe a boat containing 200 morrocan berbers headed west to brazil 3000 years ago. To flee a danger or by foolish religious motivation

@@Spongebrain97 It's interesting because the Bronze Age Greeks/Pelasgians didn't appear to put any stigma on showing women's breasts at all, and instead appeared to believe they needed to be aired out in the open. Instead, they put far more focus on the skirt, which was very colorful and complex with a very low hemline.

Apparently they do this with a lot of historical figures and a lot of ancient peoples.

D.C. not at all what he’s saying, you’re seeing this world through the colonialist lense through which you have forced yourself to believe and now believe everyone is in the wrong. The reason you might call it pre/proto is because he is asking about the earliest transition period from a semi nomadic and/or tribal civilisation into the flourishing Bronze Age and later civilisations. This misconception that the period was “proto” for most of its existence is due to the lack of (easily understood and accesible) information we have, leading to us to condense the period

Ok, some GREEK LIGHT : - What people find difficult to understand in Greek history is the term "evolution". - Minoans, Mycenaeans, Dorians, Pelasgians, Graecians (Greeks), Hellenes etc were the same race, evolved through the ages. - The fact that the Myceneans had conflict with the Minoans is the same story as Athens had with Sparta and later Macedonia had with Athens. - They had different dialect and were jealous and hostile to each other, but they were the same race (Same figure, culture, Gods, writing etc.). - In my country we call ourselves "Έλληνες" (Hellenes). It was the last name we gave ourselves 2500 years ago. - That name came from the father of the kings Achaeus, Aeolus, Ion and Dorus (the founders of the four tribes Dorians, Ionians, Aeolians, Aechaeans. Alexander the great was the one who united all Tribes, all city states (Athens, Sparta, Macedonia, Argos, Korinth, Megara) in one Hellenic nation for the first time in millenia. - But we are commonly known as "Γραικοί" (Graecians or GREEKS) because of the name the Latins came to know us before we call ourselves Hellenes. - Before that we were known as "Πελασγοί" (Pelasgians). The people who lived in all the Aegean and the mainland. - Before that, and at the same time, we were known as "Δαναοί" (Danaans), "Αργείοι" (Argives) etc according to the city we were living. Cities in between the Mycenaean territory, Asia Minor, Aegean islands, the Black Sea, Crete etc. - Before that, and at the same time, we were also called "Μινωίτες" (Minoans). -Before that... We just don't know. Were we natives?, Did we come from other places? Are we Aliens? (Just kidding...) That's something we don't know. But there are certain things We know. - The "Linear A" writing system (Minoans were using) evolved to the "Linear B" (Myceaneans were using) and later we borrowed from another foreign civilazation (the Phynicians), their alphabet, we adjusted that into our needs and we created the Classic Greek alphabet from wich the Latin and the Cyrillic alphabets came from. - BUT if you heard an Athenian, a Spartan, a Macedonian and a Pontian speaking you would thing it's different languages because of the different dialects. - Just have in mind that in Greece we have the EXACT same language and writing system as we had before 2500 years ago and we STILL have some Minoan cultures habits after 4000 and 5000 years ago. - So, if YOU don't know Greek, doesn't mean all the Greek tribes were not ... Greek! - I am not a historian, I am a merchant Navy Officer. But this is my history and I know it. I don't know all countries history, but I Hope I gave some light into my civilization's history.

Well, with the arrival of the Phoenicians in Crete, the divisiveness and flourishing of the Minoan civilization, the flourishing of monumental construction - palaces - begins to increase. Minos, son of the Phoenician princess of Europe and nephew of the legendary Cadmus, was of particular importance to the Phoenician elite on the island of Crete. This is why Greek blood has such a high degree of DNA from the east. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minos en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cadmus en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Europa_(consort_of_Zeus) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greeks#Genetics
