Brits and Spanish did have more points in common when we start looking deeper in history... Sadly, when you decided to cut ties with Rome the relations really went south maybe too much and even out of proportion at times... Hope we can get along better and reconcile some historical issues. As for England/Britain place in european culture we tend to think that, just as her iconic climate conditions, it is kind of a mysterious land of seclusion and mist... also doing her own thing. The fact that you travel the world out of that "secrecy" is also an oddity of history (I guess that is your norman/viking component playing out)

The Spanish Empire was not a colonial empire such as the English, French or Dutch, but on the contrary, it was the last empire of the ancient type, closer to what Rome or Greece were. 300-400 years of domain based on miscegenation, alphabetization and conversion of different peoples; construction of universities, cathedrals and cities worldwide; a huge cultural and artistic explotion; deliberation of new phylisophic, teologic and juridic debates in human history (like f.e., if all humans were equal); discoverments that changed the conception of the world; opening of new shipping routes; creation of an undefeated infantry for 2 centuries; expansion of the Hispanic culture throughout the Atlantic and Pacific ocean (called "the spanish lake" at that time) as Rome did throughout the Mediterranean... All of this, in a world as big as the one we know today, but using a technology from 5 centuries ago. From there onward, european empires had a colonial model based on mercantilism, slavery, and large-scale production, creating factories or plantations in overseas possessions, instead of a civilizing reproduction of their society. The former were a global market, the latter a global kingdom. European empires shouldnt be generalized by the fact of having overseas territories, because not all of them were the same.
@Notimportant37376 ай бұрын
While you couch it in cozy language and are whitewashing the hell out of this, you have a point; Spanish colonialism different from Portuguese, English or French colonialism in some ways. That being said Japan tried to do the exact same thing to the various peoples of the far east during its imperial age, and we had to invent the most destructive weapon ever manufactured to stop them. Regardless of how gently or zealously you r*pe a nation, or regardless of the tools employed to supplant their culture, your still r*ping it.

Absolutely! It's worth noting that Encomienda is extremely similar to what the Romans did when they conquered foreign lands outside of Italy with their Latifundium plantations using slave labor. Add to that feudal practices and the catholic church and you get Spanish civilization.

Spain was the worst colonizer, most unhumane society we have ever seen. Look at what spain did to The Philippines, Central and South America. Research and be honest about it. Murderers, theives, rapists. Can you say Spanish Inquisition? Why do most central American, South Americans and Philippinos have Spanish surnames? The English took over the patricide from the Spanish, and then Ameriica put an end to that and provided freedom and a way of life for everyone. There is a mistake. The Celts and the Celtiberians were two different groups living in Spain. The Celts lived in central, northen and western Iberian, while those celts in the west adopted influences from the Iberians (so a mixed group with celtic language and iberian customs) known as the Celtiberians. In the English language both terms get confused.
