In the Caribbean, the territorial sea of the Kingdom of the Netherlands has a direct boundary with France (Sint-Maarten / Saint-Martin), Saint-Kitts and Nevis (Sint-Eustatius). Furthermore, the exclusive economic zone of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the Caribbean has boundaries with the United States (US Virgin Islands), the Dominican Republic, the United Kingdom (Anguilla and British Virgin Islands) and Venezuela. Here's a couple I have not seen: - The Netherlands and France share a land border, on the island of Saint Martin. - Also, the Netherlands has a maritime border with Venezuela and the Dominican republic (Aruba) and the US (between Saba and the US Virgin Islands), making Germany be only one country away from the US. - The Dutch province of Flevoland is man made and lies in the former Zuiderzee, now IJsselmeer. - Even though Russia is a huge country it has no access to a four season port that does not require passing through territorial waters of other states (Pass through Denmark and Sweden from Kaliningrad. Pass through Turkey and Greece and either also Egypt, or Spanish, Moroccan and even British waters from the black sea ports). Monaco is the only acknowlegded european microstate that is not landlocked (unless you also count Malta as a microstate, which is an archipelago). - Liechtenstein is the only european landlocked country locked between landlocked countries. - As you touched on the placement of Berlin as the capital of Germany may seem a bit odd as it is not central in Germany at all (after 1945/1990). This is even more pronounced with Vienna in Austria and Bratislava in Slovakia. In all of these cases the choice for the capital is based more on historical or legal reasons (there is already a system in place, heads of state are there, parliaments and diplomats go there etc.) more than location.

It is because we tend to assume that one part of a geographical entity (a country, a region or a continent) is always closer to another part of this entity than to a place from another entity. Real geography does not work like how we tend to simply things in our heads... For exemple, Marseille and Lille are two cities within The country of France. Yet, the fact is that Marseille is actually not only lot closer to other cities of other countries like Barcelona, Milan, Madrid or Oma than it is to Lille, but it is also closer to another continent (Africa) than it is to the city of Lille. When you are in the southern coast of France you are closer to north Africa than you are to the north of your own country... Also, it might surprise some that Even the city of Paris, that many people tend to think as a « northern city » is closer to algiers than it is to stockholm

4:34 "[Freisburg im Breisgau's location] really shows how kind of weirdly located Berlin is for a capital." Considering how it was more or less dead centre in the former German Empire, (and by extension all the territories historically held by Prussia and in the surrounding HRE) it has more to do with border changes than anything else.
@doffer1153 жыл бұрын
Dresden and Leipzig would be closer. In fact geographical centers don't have much to do with capitals irl. Berlin is Germany's capital because it was Prussia's capital, which it in turn was because it was Brandenburg's capital. Had Wolfsburg been Brandenburg's capital, it now would be Germany's...

No, those bases inside of Germany are technically still German soil. The US has to actual pay a x amount to keep using them.

For the language facts, you should've overlaid a map of the language borders (by mutual intelligibility) to see how weirdly the shapes of "countries" change. Belgium, Switzerland and Luxembourg simply cease to exist, Norway and Sweden merge, Germany gains territory all over the place all the way into Italy and several territories suddenly gain independence.

@HUGOGARCAO4 жыл бұрын
Really? Berlin is below the german average gdp? How come?
@Skeatboart4 жыл бұрын
@@HUGOGARCAO That is because after the partition of Germany, Berlin was also split. East-Berlin was in a socialist state and couldn't develop like West-German cities. West-Berlin was a capitalist city, but it was an exclave with almost no economic importance and it was hard to access (2 highways and 1 rail, that's all). So Berlin as a whole couln't match it's developed western counterparts. But I think that soon, it will at least be at the same level as the average German
