We visited Cyprus more than a decade ago. Now we're returning to the island in the eastern Mediterranean. What has changed for the people in this divided country since joining the EU -- for hotel manager Demetris or goat farmer Giorgia in the Greek part of the island? In the Turkish north, we meet the sculptress Zehra and business student Baran.

The biggest hurdle for reunification is that Turkish Cypriots are now living in the old houses of Greek Cypriots, and Greek Cypriots are now living in the old houses of Turkish Cypriots. If they reunify, people will want their properties back, which have been hosting families for 50+ years. It’s a disaster really

Cyprus is anothert victim of the Cold war. Back then (50's) NATO was the ruler of the island and wanted to stay after the solution (The USSR had great influence at the Middle East, so Cyprus was a strategic highlight for NATO). At that time EOKA acted on the island with success. British goverment was outraged for that and as expected they did something about it. They spread faction between the people. Some FANATIC members of EOKA commited crimes against Turkish Cypriots. (Those actions were not welcomed by EOKA). Similar crimes were also commited by Turkish Cypriots against Greek Cypriots. After independence, Makarios was aiming the union with Greece but soon he quit that solution, because such a solution meant war between Greece and Turkey. So NATO decided to separate the island, in order to achive double union so Greece and Turkey has taken their share without harm eachother, except Cypriots that both countries didn't take into account. That was the solution of NATO that only FANATICS from both sides helped to get established. Turkey made its union. So now they claim the north part. They do not want to leave from a profitable land. Greece do not claim the south part, because Cypriots remain indepedenced. So without fanatics and Turkey we can live together!!! RIGHT?

@miklmiklmtrcycl6009 5 жыл бұрын
Theo cy ridiculous. The Turks needed no help. Cyprus has for many decades been seen as neutral ground. Americans like everyone has a huge listening station there, I’ve seen it from the outside. There were many many people and orgs sympathetic to the Turk Cypriot cause so the Turks had no need to take the risk of using US or UK assistance. Canadian peacekeepers were on the ground and some died as did other peacekeepers. There is no need to make this complex. No one wanted the junta. The junta brought suffering that goes on to this day. It’s really quite simple.

Guys stop talking nonsense. Bottom line is Greeks on Cyprus joined Greece to get rid of Turks in Cyprus. They formed a terrorist group called Eoka killing Turkish civilians. The religious leader Makarios at the time wanted to join Cyprus with Greece but when he realised this would cause mayhem as one of the guarantors of the country being Turkey would not accept this "obviously". So once Makarios decided not to join Cyprus with Greece, Greece and Greek extreme nationalists in Cyprus attempted assassinating him 5/6 times. War didn't start at 1974, first Turk shot was in 1956. Turkeys only mistake is they took too long to arrive to the shores of Cyprus as many Turks were killed for being Turks, baby's machined gunned, families buried alive while the UN watched them being dug out. Turkey simply exercised their rights for being a guarantor and since Turkey arrived the war ended and peace began. Simple!

As I am a Turk from Turkey, turkish artist cypriot's words hurt me. I am understanding his feeling, but also understanding that everything is related with money. There is no fidelity anymore in cypriot. Actually, our grandfathers went there to save turkish people lifes and died there for them. But, they will almost blame to Turkey. I don't know political reasons or something else. But i know that my grandfather was sincere to go there to save them. You damn it. We are also in economical bad situation. And we experienced biggest economical crisis in Turkey because of cypriot operation. But, we never said that, we was wrong to go there to save them. Because We belived that we did true thing to save people. I am sorry for this for both side. Maybe, we should have closed our eyes to persecution.

Do this report now. See how TRNC defied the odds. 1- Tourism has been booming ever since from 200 thousand to roughly 2 million tourists a year. 2- No, the settlers from turkey did not make the Turkish Cypriots more religious. in fact, they have adopted our own culture, their descendants are less religious and freer. 3- TRNC government is getting stronger and stronger even without any support from the EU, recent plans to open maras(Varosha) will further boost TRNC tourism thus give the state more recognition. 4- After the 2017 negotiations have failed even with all of the compromises made by Akinci, Most of the Turkish Cypriots no longer want reunification but recognition of the TRNC. many would even prefer the current situation to continue rather a unified Cyprus. This has given the TRNC and Turkey the green light to seek recognition by other states rather than wasting time negotiating about something that will never happen. The government has announced that 25+ countries are ready to recognize TRNC but were held back by Turkey for the sake of negotiations. 5- The GDP per capita has been increasing ever since at a rate that only a few countries have been able to achieve one being Israel, People of the north got richer, they have EU passports, they live in their own state freely, their future is secured by turkey. What would they want more? 6- The people of the north can now attend universities in Europe, can work in the EU. 7- Since the talks have failed, investments have been pouring into the TRNC state which led to massive developments across the coast of the Iskele region and Karpas region, in Girne and Famagusta. The standard of living is getting higher and higher.

announcer says erroneously that the Ms so and so drives in the greek part of Cyprus. She should know better and not be so ignorant. There is neither a greek part nor a turkish part, but one Cyprus , a full member of the EU and the United Nations, inhabited but greek and turkish speaking cypriots. The northern part has been under occupation by turkish troops since 1974. Reporters should be more cautious and knowledgeable. Both communities have lived in peace for ages until politics - mostly imported politics - made a mess of things. Soon hopefully the whole situation will go back to normal, however it is ridiculous to talk about greek and turkish parts.

The subject in this documentary "Sevgi" is not the voice of the Turkish Cypriot people but instead is a self styled left wing marxist activist. Her comments regarding the stance of Turkey are a nonsense. the TRNC can offer immigration rights to any applicant that satisfies the specific Criteria much like is fond in any other country and it does. The demographics of Cyprus changes when the Greeks committed acts of human atrocities in their campaign of ethnic cleansing. I put this women on notice for inciting racial unrest and making false and defamatory statements and in fake reporting. If she is committed to good works in t he name of humanity, then she should go and pay her respects to the families of the soldiers that died in her name . Those soldiers young men aged 18 to 25 left their homes in Turkey leaving behind their mothers and farther , sisters and brothers , wives and daughters never to be seen again because they put their lives on the line to save the lives of the Turkish Cypriots so that today idiotic people like this women can go chanting Anti Turkish sentiments. How unpatriotic how racist your are. A traitor to your own people. Web results

I feel for the younger people in wanting to be a part of the modern world and it’s advantages, but they are victim to themselves and their own culture. Northern Turkish Cyprus should never be recognized as a state, and if the Turkish people in the North of Cyprus want to join Europe again then they need to break ties with Turkey, give back what they have taken, compensate the Greeks, and of the Cypriots want to live under Greek rule the Turkish should either accept this or leave. But the issue here is the Turkish cannot have it both ways.
