The "Mediterranean Fan Palm," as it's often called, is a multi-trunk palm yet it stays very compact and won't outgrow a small area.
It makes a stylish accent for any home, especially those with a Spanish or Mediterranean flair.
The color of this palm is usually green with a silvery cast, though no two European fans are exactly alike in color or shape.
Because of the sharp teeth or "spines" lining each stem, the European fan is best placed a safe distance from heavy foot traffic.

The blue variety is called Chamaerops humilis var. cerifera and is interestingly suspected to be much hardier than var. humilis. You can also get the Vulcano version (var. compacta I believe it's called) which is a newly discovered variety found on a single island off Italy and grows in an extremely compact form with very dense leaves. It means that you can have a European fan palm that doesn't grow huge or out of control.

Hi, do they always grow sideways or on a slant?

All of ours are clumps of palms and they are ALL curved/slanted. I looked on the internet and had a hard time finding a straight example. It might grow straight if it isn't in a clump? Give it a shot and let us know how it goes :)
