The opening titles for ITV's coverage of the European Football Championship from Sweden in 1992. For the next tournament, in England, the championships would be renamed the more catchy Euro 96.

Earliest tournament I can remember bit gutted though as italia 90 was class. Remember Platt scuffing it in against Sweden then England doing what they always seem to do in big tournaments and bottle it from winning positions! As a Utd supporter it was great to see Schmeichel win it with Denmark though!
@toto1999 Жыл бұрын
Have you started supporting Manchester City yet? Oh, and Italia '90 was not 'class'. One of its semi-finalists only won one game to get there. A losing quarter-finalist's record was P5 W0 D4 L1.

without a doubt Yugoslavia would have won a tournament - Stoikovic,Pancev, Mijatovic, Jarni, Savicevic, Prosinecki etc - proved by Croatia reaching the semi's in 1998 when many of the players reached their prime
@makishev9048 жыл бұрын
Jarni and Prosinecki would not be allowed to participate on the tournament by the Croatian goverment but Pancev would played for Yugoslavia even though Macedonia declared independence in september 1991. Also Darko Milanic and Srecko Katanec form Slovenia.
@melanief86328 жыл бұрын
Thats what Uefa were scared off they didnt want Yugoslavia winning so robbed them of their rightful place in the finals, Stojkovic Savicevic Mijatovic Pancev Mihaljovic etc would have won it
@pak86067 жыл бұрын
Prosinecki was injured, but even if he was'nt he would not have played. Hadzibegic (a Bosnian) was not willing to risk reprisals and Ivkovic, the goalkeeper in Italia 90 would not have played

Vaguely remember this intro. I guess the intro was already in the can when Yugoslavia got booted from the tournament. A comparatively easy fix these days, not so much in 1992.

Did the war in Yugoslavia also effect the 1994 World Cup qualifying campaign with teams switched to other groups at the last minute
@sikinder034194810 жыл бұрын
Probably. They were banned from taking part in USA '94. Huge shame cos they would have had a cracking tournament in '92 and who knows in '94. Which was why it was awesome when Croatia finished third in France '98
@mercifulzeus0110 жыл бұрын
The qualifying draw had already taken place (in December 1991), so the group into which Yugoslavia had been drawn ended up with only five teams by the time the campaign began. Although there were originally 5 groups of 6 and one group of 7, UEFA (who were responsible for drawing the European section) decided against moving one team from the group of 7 to the group vacated by Yugoslavia, as this would have created major problems for that team, who would already have made substantial match arrangements, as would all of their opponents.

Yugoslavia were banned from USA 94 on 1st October 1992, by which time the qualifying competition had already started. Their first game (I think) was due to be played on 2nd September 1992 at home to Iceland was postponed and subsequently cancelled.

Double standards by Uefa for euro 96 they banned Yugoslavia yet let croatia bosnia and slovenia take part as if the war was only Yugoslavia's doing

The Euros really weren't a big deal until Euro '96 when it expanded to 16 teams and started to become like a European World Cup. It probably helped that the events of the late 80s/early 90s produced about 12 more countries to be able to compete for it.

England were very lucky to be in Sweden but if Ireland had not drew 3-3 away to Poland (the Irish were 3-1 and on the verge of going to Sweden instead of England but conceded 2 late goals to make it a 3-3 draw) and Ireland could have ended up qualifying on goal difference and it was Poland with the 0-0 draw against Ireland in Dublin both cases England played Turkey on the same days and won both 1-0 while the Irish drew their games against Poland (had the Irish shut up shop at 3-1 away to Poland the last 2 England games could have been dead-rubbers because England would not have been able to qualify as it would have gone to goal difference as Ireland scored more goals than England)
@hensmithers96873 жыл бұрын
ireland had their chances and were pish in qualifying for Euro'92
@strzxgvnuvwvfld35975 ай бұрын
Conceeding three goals in a match is rarely just bad luck. Mistakes are costly in a group as tight as this. Also, if England had gone to Poland needing to win, they may have thrown the kitchen sink and come away with 2 points. Similarly, they may have been caught on the break and lost 2-1. There are so many ifs. Not sure how "lucky" England were anyway. Three very forgetable performances and a first round exit. It wouldn't have been a massive loss to have stayed at home!

Awful theme! ITV ditched the classic 88-92 Match theme for this dross. They then kept it, without the words, for their coverage of The Ensleigh League. Equally as bad. This theme resulted in the end for the glory days of ITV’s football coverage.

Crap opening for a crap tournament - no Yugoslavia, still only 8 teams (why?), ‘big’ teams generally not that great; the sense that the WC - as an event - was still miles ahead and the general anticlimactical feel

Yugoslavia was barred for human rights abuses ye feckin clown
@RW-nr6bh Жыл бұрын
I actually liked the 8 team format but then each to their own. Qualifying for this was a real achievement. Nowadays half of Europe gets to go each time. Still the world moves on.
@whipchorus3726 Жыл бұрын
@@RW-nr6bh Of course now it’s gone too far in the other direction; I think once upon a time 8 team was fair enough but I think as time went on it held the tournament back and made the WC seem like a much bigger event, even if by limiting the EC to 8 it preserved a level of quality. However, sometimes many of those 8 don’t turn up and the way Europe was expanding and opening up for ex Soviet states, the former Yugoslavia, Czechs etc the move to 2 qualifiers per group was imo well overdue
