Interesting fact: Wyoming is the least populated state because of its harsh climate and rugged living environment. But it is actually stunningly beautiful and is home to a couple of very famous national parks: Yellowstone and Grand Teton. Many states are also defined by rivers. The reason the four corners exist is because the borders are in the middle of the desert. Nonetheless, each of the 4 states have very different political populations. Just took a European quiz and got 70%. I can locate all but about 5 European countries and, of course, all 50 states. I know where I come from (my European roots and my American background)! :) Thanks for making this video!

The states aren't "just districts" they are bigger, more independent, and self-governing than the districts of England or Poland. A state essentially is a country that agrees to give up some freedom in exchange for more resources and stability. It's The united states, not because we are united under one person but under one idea, much like the EU but statehood is eternal regardless of what a certain lone star state might say. many states were independent for a short time before joining the USA. The states are comparable to European countries because they are just as big, and just as diverse geographically, politically, and culturally. kinda like how the UK is a country of countries that act as one country on a global scale but individually on a national scale, so too is the US a Country of Countries, that are named states, that act as one country on a global level but as individuals on a national level. So yes you can't make fun of Americans for not knowing Europe if you don't know the US

It's not comparable because on most maps and in most settings your states don't matter to anyone outside the USA. But if you watch the news or international sports you should know where Norway, Brazil, Germany, Romania, Afghanistan, Nigeria, North Korea, Egypt etc. is. Your illogical squares are not really vital information or as diverse from one to the next. Also, no one would call an American dumb for not knowing where Monaco or Andorra is. But even taking two guesses for Greece and everyone else will cringe so hard their soul leaves the earth.

Honestly pretty good, I think the average American might get about the same (maybe like 50-60%), and probably worse at European geography, so good on you. I will just add for a bit of clarification that in the west, states were admitted to the Union on a case-by-case basis, not necessarily to "Get more votes." In particular California and Texas were admitted in 1850 to balance slave states and free states, as well as Missouri and Maine (weirdly enough Maine used to be part of Massachusetts), but after the Civil War ended in 1865, most of the western states were just admitted when they had a high enough population to apply for statehood. Fun fact, Wyoming was almost denied statehood because they gave women the right to vote in territorial elections (a failed ploy by the Democrats to balance black Republicans with white, female Democrats). Rather than repeal the law to gain statehood, the legislature and the governor resolved that they would rather stay a territory for a hundred years than join the Union "...without our women." Wyoming was later admitted on July 10, 1890.

Add to that our tendency to identify with our ancestry no matter how badly Europeans don't want us to. In some areas of our nation people identify with their religion before their state. They can tax the land and the people, and as long as they dont do anything unconstitutional, they can run their state however they like. 2. Western expansion was not done for “more votes”, that’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard. Back in the 1800s it was believed by some politicians that they were destined, by God, to take the territory to the Pacific Ocean. It was called Manifest Destiny. Also, there were resources (gold being one) and lots of land for farming that drew more settlers west. It has nothing to do with voting. 3. Almost 50% of Wyoming is federal land for National and Preserves. The Rocky Mountains go through much of Wyoming so it is in no way “all flat and boring”. The European part of russia is way bigger then Texas it's about half of the continental US. I know every European country and most of the US I'd like too see you try too find all the 44 countries of the European continent I'd be surprised if you get 10 I'd be amazed if you get 25
@andreribeiro521 Жыл бұрын
That is dum. Texas might be bigger, but not more important. It is way worse not knowing where France or the UK are than not knowing where Texas is even though Texas is bigger. I think you can agree with that. The same way that there are regions in China, Russia or Brazil way bigger than Texas and no one knows where they are, The thing that matters is importance, and many european countries are more important than every american state, therefore, more important to know where they are.

Next time you should try one of the games that DOESN'T give you the name of the states so you can "cheat" by trying to remember where they were. It's like playing the old game of Concentration - this is a multiple choice game that gives you the answers, so doesn't really test your actual knowledge. Vermont and New Hampshire are mostly separated by the Connecticut River which is why they "fit together" like that. A few states' borders are defined by rivers, like about two-thirds of Oregon and Washington is defined by the Columbia River, or California and Arizona by the Colorado River. The short period of time of the settlement of the U. S./Canada (400 years) is extremely different compared to Europe/Asia, which was settled over millenia and borders were defined not only by geographic influences, but also hundreds (thousands?) of wars, where boundaries are constantly redefined and country names come and go. You are lucky that you have never had to learn the "new name" of any American or Canadian state or province - they have always been the same. We, on the other hand, are constantly having to re-learn the new names and borders of European countries. I grew up with West and East Germany, the U. S. S. R. which really only seemed to consist of Russia, and Czechoslovakia (I can't keep up with those name changes). Right at this moment, I can probably name most of the countries in Europe, although I get confused somewhere down around Macedonia. Please keep in mind that Americans have to memorize all 50 states and their capitals - those are naturally more important than other countries. Just as you probably don't need to know where Nebraska and Wisconsin are, most Americans don't need to to know where Lithuania and Albania are. If they are in the news, then we might look at the map. You can't compare naming UK counties with U. S. States - it's not the same thing at all. England by itself fits inside Oregon, and is 1/4 the size of California. How many people in the UK can name any county in Oregon or California, or any county in the United States? Anyway, I've had too much coffee, guess I'll go bounce off walls now.

I find it amusing how the comments are filled with people from the US insisting that: "It's not dumb to compare knowledge of US states to knowledge of Europe's/world's countries!". ...and then using every possible excuse to justify themselves. "US states are larger than (some) European countries!" Can any of the people who claim that name a *single* district in Russia? "That doesn't count, US states have a lot more autonomy than districts!" So can they name a single autonomous district in France? "That's a bad comparison 'cause US states have more people than Europe's autonomous districts!" Okay, can they name a single autonomous district in China, then? ...and then it seems to devolve into the most insane Moon logic you can imagine. -_- Thankfully, majority of the US commenters seem reasonable and don't just go: "Whats your grudge against Americans!?" ...which, sadly, was an *actual* comment down here. :( My father always claimed I was bad at geography (despite me being near the top of my class) because my brother was so good at it that he could draw the entire world map (or continental maps) & all country borders and mark all capitals from memory, then name all countries and their capitals. >.>

After seeing the districts of UK I didn’t know they would be that easy lol Also states are pretty self governing and more well known. There are a similar amount and some us ones on are more distinct and bigger to me and many more influential than some European countries But of course no one should be expected to know all about the geography of a region far from them. I know all the states territories and provinces of the US and Canada but I wouldn’t expect someone not in North America to know them. Americans don’t need to know all the nations in Europe either(but everyone should now the obvious ones[mostly Western Europe]) since they will rarely ever impact you. 6:04 there’s actually a quadripoint in Africa and many similar straight line borders. And America has unfortunately invaded itself You still did really good though

The states are individually governed for the most part, states have totally different laws and the states are the same size as the European countries
@LandonAPersonКүн бұрын
Still not the same as European countries at all. Most states are quite similar to eachother. European countries speak different languages, have different histories going back thousands of years, and have totally different forms of governments. I'm saying this as an American.

As an American, I just took the same test and got 100% in 2:22, and it would have been slightly quicker had I not been interrupted by a friend. False, counties are like districts. States are country level (literally the word State means this exactly). The USA is a union of independent States. If the EU had a federal government overseeing the union responsibilities of the combined States (countries), you wpuld have the U.S.E.

Problems with your excuses, all states are self governing, also most are bigger than most European countries. States are not provinces, they're essentially semi-autonomous countries (state is also a synonym for country) very similarly to the EU member STATES.

States ARE self governing!!!! That's what Europeans CANNOT understand. Your version of Federalism is totally different from our version. When you don't know our states you do not know or understand US No you are so so wrong about our state borders. One most states are defined by natural rivers. Two the fact that state borders are open is one purpose of constitution. It is like thinking Ireland Wales Scotland and England are all the same.
@Lau2856.24 күн бұрын
German states are federtaised to a similar point. You must have some weird rivers then. Your states are mostly random lines without their own history. Also the uk countries have or had their own languages. There is a scottish a welsh and a irish langauge. Can you show me soemone who speaks colorado?
