What you are witnessing is a focus on individual economic gain in a given society to the exclusion of all knowledge not directly relevant to that one goal. You can bet these people know their jobs well, can handle a tax return, balance a bank account and run their lives relatively well. I see that happening in my native Ireland where humanities, history, geography and the like ,are now frowned upon and disparaged in favour of Tech and STEM subjects which are deemed profitable and leading to a well paid job. Knowledge for knowledges sake is no longer deemed worthy of praise and support in our educational system and over emphasis is placed on turning out highly specialised job holders for the benefit of large, mainly foreign, corporate entities. People with a broad knowledge of geography, world affairs and history from various viewpoints are now viewed as trouble-makers and disruptors of a world dominated by greed and division and short-term gain. They often bring more trouble on themselves and certainly do not earn big money in their lives. Modern young people can see this and so they shun knowledge and education for its own sake and are not embarrassed by lack of knowledge in now out of date areas of study.
