Liz, this is a great video! Love your analogy of athletes needing breaks! During my interminable wait for my D7 visa, I find myself losing momentum in my Portuguese studies, but still try to stay engaged with the language in some fashion every day, like watching RTP news or listening to music (Mariza is my current favorite). I get lots of practice on directions because my GPS is now entirely in Portuguese and I use it a lot, being in a new city. Also at various times during the day, I tell myself in Portuguese what I am doing: estou a lavar a loiça; preciso de ir buscar o meu filho às 11 horas, etc. I'm often not sure I'm saying it right, but I'm trying to think in Portuguese. And most importantly for me, having the touchstones of the Portuguese Pro weekly workshops keeps me in the game!

Did you make this video just for me Liz? Thank you. It's time to get back in the saddle. I've been back in Portugal for a month now, and haven't restarted my Portuguese Pro course, which I very much should have done more than two weeks ago! I don't know, I have to talk and listen to my Portuguese neighbors every single day now, so maybe I feel I'm getting enough? But that's not true!!! It's time to go back to the tried and true structure work of Liz Sharma to improve everything on all levels and from every angle. Thanks again.

Lessons failing so badly I walked out yesterday. On the other hand, I'm in the process of trying to join a very professional choir. I thought that singing in Portuguese would help me enormously, but they do the classical choral repertoire - so, its good that I'll be out amongst portuguese people (if they let me in, haven't heard yet), but - if I want to sing in Portuguese, where will they do that? So I went to church! So, from now on, 10:45 on Sunday mornings, I'll be off to Church. That will help me link into my community, and hopefully I'll get to sing in Portuguese, and there I might, at last, get the rythm of the language.

@@TalktheStreets And I was accepted - for a month's trial anyway. I'll be singing in Coimbra on 8th October :) Choral Phydellius. They're really good, and I'm struggling because my voice broke 23 years ago (turns out its normal in menopause) and I've never re-learnt how to sing. Sharp learning curve! I've ordered a piano so I can practice at home.

For most people, one of the hardest parts when learning a new language, is the active part (as someone stated in a comment below). What helps for me is speaking to myself and preparing some small dialogues. Let's say you want to go to the market to buy fruit and vegetables. How would you start? Obviously by greeting the person. Rehearse that. Afterwards, think of what you would like to buy. As you're preparing, you can look up the words and structures you need. You will be amazed at how much you can achieve this way. Just jump into it and ... Boa sorte! 😉

Obrigada! Here I am again... My daily routine is... up at 6.15 to get ready for work, then work and home at 17.15. Then cook, eat... blah blah... repeat another 3 times... I find it hard to do anything on these days but I guess 15 mins in these days and a little longer on the other 3 days will work... I choose listening to some radio whilst cooking tea and reading aloud from Óbidos Diario or nit... Jx

Great video as always! For me, life can get in the way, so I don't always have as much time as I'd like. However, I do still do as much as I can each day. Sometimes (and I find this with my Spanish learning too), I can make silly mistakes with things. This could simply be due to tiredness but it gets me frustrated and disheartened. However, I always remember not to give up completely. I take a break and go back to it later - even if that means the next day. After a bit of sleep I'm fine and enjoying it again. Anyone else have this issue?

Love these vids, thank you! I just wondered - in case I missed it - have you posted a video on Portuguese intonation? Been listening to some native Portuguese and it seems to have a 'singing' quality to it; notable changes in pitch in certain parts of the sentence/ certain words. I know you're a singer so perhaps this comes naturally to you. Might be an interesting topic for a video?
