To answer your question, yes, Yellowstone is the oldest national park. In fact, Yellowstone is the first national park in the world.

And the road she came in on to Mammoth H.S. was wiped out since then, too. Crazy how all of that flooding wiped out the entire road into Mammoth. WFLHD finally just opened a new road to Mammoth last year or so. Glad they had a dirt road they maintained that they basically just paved over and opened!

I brought my dog on my Yellowstone and Grand Teton trip. One morning I was walking him and suddenly there was a bison 20 ft away. I was so scared that he was going to bark and cause the bison to attack us but he remained quiet as if he knew not to mess with it. We were able to walk away safely.

Bizarre traffic jam in Grand Teton: When my wife and I were driving in Grand Teton National Park, we were stopped on the road.....caught in a traffic jam. Both sides of the road were jammed up, inundated with dozens and dozens and dozens of buffalo grazing alongside the road, walking across the road at their leisure, standing in the road oblivious to us city dwellers wanting to get to our 6:30 p.m. dinner reservation, etc. About 40 minutes later they moved off, no damage done to vehicles, so we could race to make our stupid reservation. Looking back, we were idiots for not knowing what is really important in life. Learn from us.

Traffic jams in Yellowstone are usually animal related. It's not hard to see bears, but stay away. We came out of Old Faithful Inn and a young moose was grazing at a corner of the building. That's a busy, busy location.

I look at this and think about the early settlers taking this trip in covered wagons and on horses. The beauty of the unsettled wilderness must have been beyond amazing. But, to navigate the terrain without roads, safe places to stop, eat and rest, cars, maps, and gps (😊) must have been brutal.

Bison are huge and don’t fear people, so they don’t run away or hide. Easy to find and watch them. That doesn’t mean they are friendly. Get too close and annoy them and they can turn on a dime and toss or gore you. A touron (tourist moron) had her blue jeans pulled off by a bison when she got too close, the jeans were hung on one horn. The bison became famous.

Saw a bunch a few weeks ago at Theodore Roosevelt NP. Very passive, just want to munch on grass, but intimidating to be close to them even in a car. They certainly leave behind a lot of cow patties and tracks, and the surprising thing is there were fresh tracks and cow patties on winding, steep, narrow hiking trails too.

It's hard to believe how dumb some people are, I've seen people in yellowstone try to pet bison(2000+ pounds), elk ( up to 900 lbs) , and moose(Shiras moose 1400 lbs). I'm all for Darwin awards, people that dumb shouldn't breed.Last year some dumbazz picked up a baby bison , put it in his car and took it to the ranger station because he thought it looked lost and cold( that guy really doesn't have any brain wrinkles and was fined I believe $10,000 + some other fines and could have been thrown in jail for 5-10 years)

I live an easy two hour drive from the Tetons. While Grand Teton National Park is small and lacks many of the beauties of other parks, it is still one of my favorites. The peaks of the mountains rise into view so suddenly as you come around a curve that their magnificence strikes all your senses at once, actually making it hard to catch your breath. The vast amounts of snow on the sharply sculpted peaks adds more beauty and mystery in winter.

The Teton mountain is unique in that it juts up directly from the valley floor. This is different from the Colorado Rocky Mountains that have foothills at the base of the mountain range that gradually increase in elevation until you reach the higher peaks.. The Tetons jut up from the valley floor directly without foothills because they are the "youngest" part of the Rocky Mountains. About the moose (the largest of the deer family) and other larger animals, yes, they are there. The wolves travel large distances to hunt in packs, and grizzlies do too. Sometimes wolves have been seen chasing a herd of elk or even challenging a grizzly bear. All these animals are wild and very dangerous, especially when you surprise or crowd them. You should check out the moose in videos--they're HUGE and have very nasty dispositions. They can charge at you at the slightest reason and gore and stomp you to death. Statistically, they kill more people than bears or wolves in the parks, including in Alaska.

I worked at Yellowstone in 1976-77 based at Old Faithful but spent most of my time repairing trails in Yellowstone Grand Canyon, whenI wasn’t on trash pickup duty around Old Faithful lodge. It was not great money 💰 or super intellectual work obviously but I was very young and loved it. No internet or cell phones in those days and the friends you can make with fellow US Park Service employees and the employees who work for the service vendors at food services and lodging can be really great. I did see one grizzly bear in my time there which fortunately was quite a distance ahead of me as it crossed the trail I was walking from a secluded Park Service Cabin that employees could reserve for a night or two when off duty. One thing people did was “hot potting”, that is when you strip down out of your clothes to whatever point you are comfortable with and get into a very warm part of a river that is heated by the thermal vents. It is a natural hot tub 🛀 and lots of fun. There were not many wolves in those days, they had been hunted and were reintroduced by the government decades later.

When I was at Yellowstone you could see bison/buffalo almost every part of the park. They have free reign to walk around the park and they know it! I also saw lots of crows. The rangers told us if you're interested in seeing predators like wolves and bears, you're more likely to see them in Lamarr Valley which is the northern part of the park. Just like what she said in the video. The only thing is that if you're interested in visiting Yellowstone and the surrounding parks, you really will need to fly to another state and just drive up to Wyoming. Back in 2017 when my family and I went, it was extremely expensive to fly into the airports nearest to Yellowstone. We were traveling as a group of seven. What we wound up doing was my parents and I pooled together the frequent flier miles we saved up from our credit cards and got tickets to Salt Lake City. From there my brother rented a minivan and we just spent half a day driving to Jackson Hole, which is the big town near the southern entrance of the park. So you'd have to do some homework figuring out how to get there that isn't too expensive, but won't make you spend a lot of time traveling.

Though the terms are often used interchangeably, buffalo and bison are distinct animals. Old World “true” buffalo (Cape buffalo and water buffalo) are native to Africa and Asia. Bison are found in North America and Europe. Both bison and buffalo are in the bovidae family, but the two are not closely related.

Wyoming native and while Yellowstone and Teton parks are spectacular you have to walk to see Wyoming's best mountains. The Wind River range, east of the Tetons has over 100 12,000 foot peaks, around 20 13,000 foot peaks and over 1000 lakes with fish in them. It's like the whole pie whereas the Tetons are a thin slice plopped out for a photo op. All are worth seeing and experiencing. There are hiking videos of trips into the Winds on KZbin. Cirque of Towers, Raft Lake, Deep Creeks, Green River Lakes, Cathedral Lake, Stough Creek basin, Dinwoody Canyon, Fish Lake and the list goes on and on. Great reaction, as usual.

I like mapping stuff out, and I really think everyone should experience the U.S. National Parks, so I'm gonna propose some stuff. If you consider visiting Yellowstone, Billings-Logan International Airport will probably be the closest airport. It'll put you about 3 hours from the north eastern corner of Yellowstone. I highly recommend Cody, WY (about 2 hours south from the airport) because of the Buffalo Bill Center of the West, which also has a firearm museum and natural history museum. There is also a pretty good rodeo in Cody, WY, if you are interested in experiencing a rodeo. From there you can drive into Yellowstone. It does put you on the wrong side of all of the major geysers and hot springs, but it is a beautiful drive nonetheless, and you can get a hotel on the west side by Old Faithful if you want! Grand Teton National Park isn't too far south, and then my recommendation is split. Salt Lake City, UT has an international airport, so you can go there and fly somewhere else, like San Francisco or Sacramento to make it to Yosemite and Sequoia, or drive west to Craters of the Moon National Monument in Idaho and then backtrack a bit and go down to Salt Lake City. To include Craters of the Moon to Salt Lake City would be about 1254 km of driving, totaling about 13.75 hours, and you would hit 3 national parks/monuments and a pretty awesome museum and rodeo, if you choose to include those! If you went straight to Salt Lake and then to San Francisco, down to Yosemite and Sequoia, you might as well continue down to Los Angeles to LAX to fly back, totaling 1903 km and 22 hours of total driving. This might best be done over a couple or few weeks, just to have enough time. Otherwise, visiting Yellowstone and Grand Teton are plenty worth the international trip themselves!

People often overlook what may seem obvious. I am a photographer, and every day here in Florida, the sky at sunset is amazing. Dawn often is too. People overlook or take for granted the things all around them. This person's photography is great, and the location is amazing. But really, all she is doing, and you can too anywhere you are, is paying attention to the details. Often I will go with friends to a location, and as a photographer, I take pictures. I will come away with "amazing shots" at places these friends have been to a "million times," and they are amazed. I have been told all sorts of reasons why I get interesting images. It is not any of the reasons people say, such as creativity, talent, an eye for it, upgraded equipment, or editing. While all those improve the images, the single most important thing is not taking it for granted and taking the time to look. We spend our whole lives assuming and not looking, rushing about and never taking care to see. Really, if you look at the world every day trying to see it for real, how could it not be amazing?

Yes, bison are the most common wildlife to see in Yellowstone. Elk are pretty easy to find as well. Deer. Wolves and bears are more rare. I have seen black bears most out of that group. Out of the 10-12 times I have been to Yellowstone, I have seen black bears maybe six times, wolves twice, and a grizzly once. Coyotes aren’t too rare. I saw a fox hunt and come up with a meal like the coyote in this video. One thing I have never seen in Yellowstone is a moose. I have seen one in Grand Teton, and in other mountain areas outside the parks, but not in Yellowstone.

Andre, although it's totally unnecessary, I'm going to point out the obvious, and say that this is a stunningly beautiful pair of national parks. Bison is a weird word: BUY-son. So is Yosemite: yo-SEM-ih-tea, which is a Miwok [ME-wok) word of unknown meaning. The #3 district she called the "Grand Canyon of Yellowstone" (inferring Park here), when it's actually "the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone (River)". I've been to a "boatload" of the national parks, and for me, narrowing it down to my #1 impossible. There are elk, moose, bears, and a "boatload" of other animals there. She said she was going to Grand "TEET'n; it's actually TEA-tahn. Since it was set aside in 1872, it's not only the oldest national park in the USA, but the entire world. Now national parks are everywhere. We really started something, didn't we?

React to a Bob Ross painting. With how much you goon over American wilderness, you’ll mess your pants over his live paintings

This may help you with pronouncing bison- it sounds like "bye son" as in - If you make the buffalo angry, you can kiss your butt *bye, son*. I love our national parks and want to go to Yellowstone so bad one day!

If you are going to Badlands NP in South Dakota, don't miss a short detour off the interstate to drive the Wildlife Loop Road in Custer State Park, as well as Needles Highway. You can drive north on US 385 towards Spearfish and then drive on US 14A from Cheyenne Crossing to Spearfish (through beautiful Spearfish Canyon) to get back to the interstate. The drive through Ten Sleep Canyon is the easiest route to Yellowstone from the east.

Wolves and bears you're lucky NOT seeing. Bison are easy to see but but are so massive, and unpredictable, that they should never be approached.

As others have said, there is amazing beauty in any state if you know where to look, even New Jersey! I am not sure where to go in a place like Rhode Island or Delaware, but I am sure there is something. For me, the most beautiful states are Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, Idaho, Washington, and Oregon. California if you can get away from the people. Alaska is probably the most beautiful, but I have not been there. South Dakota is awesome. Nebraska, the state where I grew up, is not considered beautiful by most. That is especially if you drive across Interstate 80. Even Nebraska has some incredibly beautiful places; Fort Robinson State Park, Chadron State Park, Scottsbluff National Monument, Wildcat Hills, the Sandhills along Nebraska Highway 2, the pine bluff and sand hills area between Chadron and Valentine. So beauty is where you look and find it.

Amazing what all you would miss if you didn't drive. You don't even need to be in a park to see what has been created for us. Bless this big and beautiful world. You're understanding more and more why Americans rarely have passports. All the best to your wife and baby too!
