We tend to tip the pizza delivery guy because he has to use his own car and pay for his own gas. That's definitely a tip-able service. Someone handing you a bag of food at a drive-through is not the same. EDIT: Refrigerators with in-door icemakers are common but it severely limits the usefulness on the inside of that door. I looked for 6 months to find a refrigerator with the icemaker in the freezer drawer instead so I could have full use of BOTH of my fridge doors. This works so much better for me.

A tip is used when a person has actually served you. Most fast food restaurants do not offer diner service. You order your own food, take your own food to the table, you get your own refills, if you need something, for instance catsup for your fries, no one brings it to you, you have to go get it. If you want more food you have to go and get it, you clean your own trash and table. In a service restaurant, a server asks you what you want, orders it for you, brings it to your table, checks back to see if everything is ok and whether or not you need anything, they top off your drink, they ask if you want anything else, when you leave, you leave your dishes on the table, the server cleans your table. When you order food to be delivered, the tip is because the delivery driver brought your food to you, you did not have to go to the restaurant to get it. You are paying for the driver's time. If you go to the restaurant to get your food, there is no tip.

The flag isn't just a representation of the country, but a symbol of Freedom and the Sacrifice's made by the people who have fought and died for our country. Red: represents Valor and Bravery. White: represents Purity and Innocence Blue: represents Vigilance, Perseverance, and Justice. The 13 red and white stripes represent the 13 original colonies. and the 50 white stars represent the 50 states. The flag is to never touch the ground. It is to be properly folded and stored when it is not in use or on display. And most importantly it is to be respected at all times. In the U.S., you do not need to ask for ice, but you may request extra ice, light ice or no ice. Another reason not mentioned for the large gaps in the bathroom stalls is to allow for medical emergencies. You would be surprised how many times paramedics have to be dispatched and the patient is in the bathroom stall. You do not need to tip when you are at places like McDonald's, but you would tip in a restaurant that serves you your food. If you have food delivered you typically tip the delivery driver for the service that they have provided. Wait staff in the U.S. are not paid a livable wage and they rely on the tips.

André, tipping a pizza DELIVERY person is appropriate because they are using their car and gas to bring your food right to your door. They are providing you with a personal service. You aren't having to get in your own car, using your own gas, getting out in the weather, to get your own pizza. They definately deserve a good tip! Even more than a waitress in a restaurant. I would say this is true at a "sit down" restaurant, where the server comes to the table to take your order and then bring you your food when it's ready to eat. Sometimes the server will ask you if you want ice water, sometimes they automatically bring you ice water to drink (depends on the restaurant policy). You tip at a restaurant where you are served directly at your table, or when food is delivered to your home/hotel room. Be aware that at some independently owned coffee shops/eateries where you order at a counter and carry your food to your table yourself, you'll see "tip jars" on the counter by the register where you pay. You don't have to tip at those places! Some people do, some don't. Some people drop coins they don't feel like carrying in the tip jar. The workers count the tips out at the end of their shift and divide it among them.

When you said "that's a rather large gap", that is where the average bathroom stall door is. The smaller gap that you said is normal is extremely rare in the US, at least anywhere I've been. To be honest, I've rarely seen stall gaps that gave me pause, but once in a while, I've seen some that look ridiculously large even from an American perspective. But the "large" gaps shown in this video are the norm, and nobody actually looks in, unless there's a toddler in the next stall with their mom. I've also had someone else's dog come for a visit in the restroom at the office (we allow people to bring dogs, and I guess this dog followed his human into the bathroom).

Andre, one thing one needs to realize that the northern border of the Lower 48 states, from Washington over to Minnesota is the 49th Parallel. The 49th runs thru Paris. So most of the Lower 48 is south of Paris. The country only gets cold during the winter. But yes, mountainous areas are cooler than Lower areas, but the desire for ice in cold drinks is and should be a no-brainer for most people. I honestly don't understand why it's not normal everywhere in the world. The trick is to put enough ice in a drink so it doesn't melt quickly, watering down the drink in the process. Everytime I see a drink with just a few cubes in it, I think, "Is there a shortage of ice that I wasn't aware of?" My mother, aunt, and even sister have had a history of not putting enough ice in their drinks and for others at gatherings. My sister even claims that really cold drinks give her headaches or some crazy thing. I honestly can't stand a "cold" drink that is near Room Temp. Sure, some beverages actually do taste a bit better when not ice cold, but that's a rarity.

Fridges have had automatic ice makers in them for about 45 to 50 years now. I can't even recall not ever having a fridge that did not have one, and I'm 51. Now most modern Fridges have the Ice and Water dispenser on the outside of the door. You see, most houses have a water line hook-up where the fridge sits in the kitchen, and all you have to do is hook up the line to the fridge and it does everything for you. Fridges have become pretty high-tech now that they even have smart tablets on the door that can display a picture of what's inside without having to open the door that let's out all of the Cold air. And I think it can even keep an inventory for you as well, and will let you know when you're low or out of something. It's crazy as to what they're doing with Fridges now. It's like something out of the future. 😅

We absolutely adore you too, Andre! We'd be proud to see you flying Old Glory. In America, it's more common to ask for no ice unless you're ordering a hot drink like coffee (sometimes even then, because iced coffee is a thing too). Ice makers are common in fridges, I have one in mine but it's broken so we have a separate ice machine. There are some fancy restaurants that charge a lot for very small portions, but you have to pay huge amounts of money to go there. Generally speaking, you pay a moderate amount of money and get a huge amount of food. The side gaps in public bathrooms are hella useful. It's for when one stall runs out of toilet paper and you need the person next stall over to save you. (That was probably not the intended effect, but it's there.) The food that gets delivered deserves a tip. Diners and restaurants that serve you with waiters get tips. Fast food places where you do most of the "fetch the food, fill the drink, find the table" work yourself...nah, no tip there. We use the metric system in sneaky places. Fun story, one of the rovers we were going to try to put on Mars passed all of its inspections because it looked right, but actually exploded when we tried to make it do its job, because funny thing: All the parts had been manufactured in different states across the country in different labs, and about half of them used the Imperial system and the other half used the Metric system and so the parts were close enough in size to assemble correctly but they weren't close enough to actually handle the rigors of space. Oops. Might have actually inspected the parts before assembly, but it was just assumed everyone was on the same page. I don't think that assumption has ever been made again.

That's not necessarily true in seasonal resort areas. As an example, if you're a server in Myrtle Beach SC, you'll do quite well in tips from March/April through September/October, but in the Fall and Winter months, it can be pretty sparse. Even when you work at one of the most well-known, popular places, right on the water, you make less than minimum wage for roughly half the year. If you're someone who is extremely good at budgeting during the good months, you can somewhat offset your off-season pay, but if you're hit with just one unexpected large expense like a large appliance or a major car repair, you're most likely going to be SOL. And being able to pick up a second job in those areas for the Winter, is unusually difficult because even the retail and entertainment businesses either close for the season or cut back their hours by quite a lot.

Tipping. Understand that if you are served by a waiter, for example, at a dining establishment, that waiter or waitress is under payed, because the management understands that they will receive tips to augment their income. Tipping is usually consider polite behavior, and is contingent upon the level of service the wait staff has given you while there, enjoying your meal. Refilling drinks, checking in on your dining experience, bringing you extra items like extra untensils, napkins, and generally making you feel attended to. Tipping in the US is generally, 20% of the total price of the bill for the meal. If service was great - 20%. If service was mediocre - maybe 10 to 15%. If you order a beverage you usually specify you don’t want ice. Ice is generally assumed to come with your drink. Yes most refrigerators I’ve seen in the U.S. come with built in ice makers. And even in colder climates people still enjoy ice in their drinks. You’ve got to remember that the “colder” climates in the United States are usually very temperate. They can and do have hot summers. (Not to the level of a desert climate, but still plenty warm) Tipping is interesting. So like a fast food restaurant you wouldn’t tip at. For a delivery service you usually tip. If you go to a restaurant and sit at a table, and have a waiter or waitress come to your table and check on you during your meal, then you’ll be expected to tip. Typically a tip of 15% (of your total order) is considered average. A 20% or greater tip would be considered for good service.

We love ice cold drinks. The more ice the better. .Some places will serve water in a bottle. If so, you can ask for a glass of ice on the side and also a slice of lemon . More people who drink hot tea in the U.S. use lemon father than milk, so you will have to ask for either lemon or milk on the side. Also, if you don't finish your meal be sure to ask for a to go box so you can have your left overs. We all do this so don't be afraid to ask. Dont forget about your free refill while you are eating. You can get a to go cup if you don't finish it. Take your dessert to go too. One price/2 meals. ( it's a bargain) Servers give good service in restaurants most of the time so its customaryntobtip 15-20% of the check ( before taxes) tob he server. You can pay the check on your credit card or pay cash but always give the tip in cash and give it to the server, font leave it on the table. There are too many nativity fingered people who will walk by and take it. Remember, servers in the U.S make way below the minimum wage and rely on tips for their income. And the servers have to share their tips with the bus boy and bartender if you get an alcoholic beverage. Also, don't be afraid to ask your server what they might recommend from the menu, or what kind of sauces the food come with. You can also ask for things like french fries well done if you want them really crispy or sauteed onions for a burger and if it comes with some kind of sauce you can ask for it on the side. And if you are in N.Y. or N.J., cheesecake is the best. If you really want to to crazy and your in a diner or ice cream place, order a banana split. Or a hot fudge sundae or a hot brownie with van. ice cream. Ooo la la! 😄

When i have no control of filling my glass for any drink, I always ask for a lot of ice, especially for water. Even at a friend's house when visiting. If you drink slowly or the room is warm, it will water your drinks faster. Before, I would ask for extra ice, the waiter brings the extra ice, but it is still not too much. My husband did not care for ice in his water. I would spoon his ice into my cup. Both of us are pleased. If I do ask for a lot of ice, and it is not enough (I dislike like the taste of warming water), the next time the waiter comes, I would ask for a glass of a lot of ice only. Sodas, if it starts off cold out of the refrigerator, the normal amount any restaurant serves you is okay. Usually, the water might be room temperature, and you add ice, it will melt faster and eventually the water will not be frosty cold. If you are not an ice person, you will have to request no ice with your drink. Usually, beers are served cold in the U.S. Sometimes here in L.A., we experience extreme drought conditions. The restaurant will not serve you water unless you ask for it. Every drop of water counts, and some people never drink the glass of water that is served to them, and it will be wasted and thrown out. Here in L.A., there are several independent cities amongst the greater L.A. area. So, the sales tax might be different in that city which might be just across the street, depending on the city's borders. L.A. might have the highest sales tax in the surrounding area/L.A. County. Maybe after a disaster, the sales tax will go up so the funds can go to recover the city's damages. Also, it depends on how you vote in your city's leaders since they are always looking for money to fund things that cannot be covered in the budget. Things like gasoline, utilities, one has to read the fine print or ask for it since the tax is built in the price. The city does not want this in plain sight so the voters cannot see all the hidden taxes and not re-elect the same council people in. L.A. and most the towns that have a high population of voters coastal) is run by the Democrat party and they love their taxes. Besides sales, state, environment, fuel mixture depending on the time of the year, usage, transportation, different organizations, and it goes on and on. One might think the gas station owners are getting rich, but most of what you pay for a gallon of gas is not going to profit. You subtract the state, city and county's share, the gas station has to pay their rent, business tax, insurance, employees, benefits, thief, security and maintenance on the pumps and other machinery, inspections, calibration and grounds/landscape. I do not drive, so I rely on home delivery. I notice now, the restaurant charges me for service fee (they are not serving me or cleaning up after me), delivery fee, some have different prices if one eats in and one who orders on-line, and tip for the delivery driver. I do a custom tip more than what I can chose from because I have special instructions where to leave the packages. Most times, it is done correctly and sometimes it is not followed (due to the lack of not looking at the instructions or they cannot read English) or occasionally I never receive it. I cannot blame the driver for getting the order wrong or missing items. I do not know what percentage the driver gets for delivering the food through the service they work for, but a lot of drivers, this might be their second job to earn money to raise their family. Plus, they are using their own cars and gasoline. I make an effort to order from local restaurants, so the drive (and their time) is not too far. Before, more of the independent fast food, coffee houses, etc... use to have a "tip" jar on the counter for the customer if they want to leave something for their service. Now, one cannot choose to leave a tip and how much, on the handheld cash register gadget/credit card swiper, there is a section how much of a tip you want to give by percentage of your bill, even if the food is taken out. I do not know what would happen if you declined, but I am embarrassed if I do not leave at least the minimum percentage of the order they have listed.

We actually have rules for the care of our flag. For instance, the flag should never touch the ground and the proper disposal of the flag when it is worn out ( yes, it can actually wear out due to weather), it should NEVER be thrown in the garbage but respectfully burned. The flag should be taken down by sunset unless there is a light to shine on it through the night ( think " Star Spangled Banner"). We never dip our flag at the opening ceremonies of the Olympics. And when a person of importance dies ( a member of Congress or the Supreme court, ordinary citizens of significance such as Rev. Billy Graham) or there is national tragedy (9/11) the President orders the flag to be flown at half staff.

11:50 Tipping is customary for certain jobs like waiters and delivery people because they typically make less than minimum wage for their work. The bill is cheaper, but it's a "thank you" for their work. It actually encourages good service. That's why European waiters are notoriously hard to get their attention. They aren't expecting a tip, so what's the point in providing good service? Fast food workers like McDonald's have the fact that they're not going to be tipped built into their wages. It's actually a fairly well-paying job.

The American flag is full of symbolism. The 13 stripes represent the original 13 colonies. There is one star for each state in the union. The colors have specific meaning about the virtues of the American Republic. And the first flag representing the United Colonies after the Declaration of Independence looked nearly identical to the house flag of the British East India Company including the British Union Jack flag where the stars now reside. The stars have five points instead of six because it was easier for a seamstress to fashion a 5-point star from cloth using a folding and cutting process. Google to learn more.

In tipping, you're not tipping because of the food, you're tipping because someone either brought the food to your table as well as drinks and refills on drinks OR someone brought the food to your home.....in these cases you leave a tip. However, if you order pizza from Domino's and go to their restaurant and pick the food up yourself and take the food to your home yourself, then no other person is involved in "serving you" so you do not leave a tip. In NYC it feels like everyone who assists you with anything expects a tip. But, this is how it works there. If a doorman at a hotel hails a cab for you, he would appreciate a tip so he can afford to live in the NYC metro area. When I go to NYC, I take a fistful of $5 bills so I can hand out tips. $1 and $2 doesn't cut it anymore.

Tipping is for good service as a reward or incentive. Usually, in restaurants, you tip when your order is taken while you are seated at the table, and things are brought to you instead of ordering at a counter and bringing your food to the table yourself. You also fill your drink and help yourself to condiments, etc., at a fast food place. Sales taxes are levied at the state and local level. They vary from state to state, city to city. We don't have a VAT. The reason is we are a collection of independent states, each controlling its own budgets and revenue. An exception is the Federal gasoline tax, but the gas tax levied by states also varies which explains the differences in gasoline prices from state to state. California has high fuel prices because of the high gas taxes. Most states have income taxes, others don't. The same applies to property taxes, high and low.

My 2 cents regarding some of these points... Flag on clothes: Yes; there are clothes with the US flag printed on them as a theme. Us flag shirts, pants, socks, even underwear. The US Flag Code does stipulate that the flag should not be worn as clothing or printed on commercial items but the Flag Code is not law. It is simply a recommended way to treat the flag and is usually only followed by the armed forces. Ice: Ice in drinks is the default (for all non-hot drinks such as sodas). If you don't want ice, you specify "no ice". Almost every new refrigerator comes with an ice dispenser and cold water dispenser. Bathrooms: Different types of toilets are used in the US versus Europe. The US uses siphonic while Europe uses washdown toilets. This results in different water levels and other pros and cons. Bidets are not at all common in the US. In Portugal some use bidets to washing after using the toilet but I would say most use toilet paper. With bidets used for other reasons such as washing feet. Hence why most Portuguese bidet spouts face down like regular sink spouts. In countries where the bidet is primarily for washing one's privates, the spout swivels up and down. Americans are for the most part resistant to the idea of washing their rears after using the toilet instead of using toilet paper to wipe it. Especially since if this were to be the case in public restrooms (as is the case in many middle-eastern nations), one would have to wipe it dry anyway. Tipping: Tipping is out of control in the US because there's a debate regarding the food industry and how they can legally pay their employees (a lot) less than minimum wage due to tipping. Nowadays, one is presented with the option (and expectation) to tip almost everywhere. Pizza for example, one used to only tip the delivery person. Now you are presented with the option even if you are picking it up yourself. Sales Tax: The video is incorrect; Sales tax being added at checkout instead of already included in the sales price has nothing to do with transparency. It is due to two simple reasons: 1) Before bar codes, some producers printed prices directly on their product's containers and since every state can have a different sales tax, the product price was pre-tax. 2) Having a lower price depicted on the shelve promotes more sales. Just like having something priced at $1.99 makes it more likely to sale compared to the same product being priced at $2.00. It's just a psychological trick. The exception to this is gasoline where there are many taxes already included in the displayed price.

In restaurants, tip. That includes in hotel restaurants. In fast food places, don't tip. If someone takes your groceries to your car for you, tip. If someone delivers a package to your home, tip. If someone delivers a pizza, or any food, to your home, tip. If someone helps you with your luggage, tip. If you're in a store, buying clothes, food, appliances, etc...don't tip (unless a worker takes it to your car for you, then tip). If you go to a drive- thru, don't tip. The real basic rule to follow, is that if anyone takes your stuff, or helps you take your stuff, to your auto, tip. If you go to hardware store, don't tip (unless...). Some places will have a sign, such as, "please tip your waiter/waitress". Others may even have a sing that says, "Please DON'T tip the staff", bc their pay is higher than a person who makes tips, so tipping is not allowed. There is no set rule in all situations, but it's not hard to figure out.

Tipping: in a restaurant, the waitstaff do not make minimum wage but a good wait person in a good restaurant can make several hundred $ a night ( or a good wsitress at a truck stop on the breakfast shift). In fast food places, you order, you pick up your food and clear up after yourself. You should also tip the person who cuts your hair, nail techs, and massage therapist, the parking valet and in upscale hotels, the bellboy and doorman.

If it is a drink that is intended to be "cool" or "cold" it will be served with ice unless you ask otherwise. If it is a "hot" beverage, you would either have to specifiy a temperature of ask for ice to be added. Yes, ice makers are extremely common in home refrigerators. Basically the only way you do NOT have an ice maker is if you have one of those really small "dormitory" fridges, and even then, it might have a freezer compartment with ice trays.

And you give a small tip, couple dollars, to a delivery person. If you walk up to counter or drive thru to order and get food, no tip required. Due to restaurants having breakfast hour then lunch hour with dinner hour ending the business day, it wasn't in the best interest of the restaurant owner to pay a salary for many hours where waiting service wasn't needed. Those taking positions waiting tables liked the idea of being around only durning the three dinning hours where those waiting tables was needed, this allowing them the off time during the day to do other things like, school study, watching a baby for set hours not to interfere with their restaurant work schedule etc; Because of this, a very low wage was given, could be $3.00 dollars an hour for the actual work time, however, the tips were generous enought to keep the waiter or watress satisfied given they chose their work level hours. A waiter or waitress many only choose to work a breakfast hour or two then return for dinner hours. One may only choose lunch hour. Government allowed for the lower hourly wage outside of mandatory minium wage requirements because of this knowing, restaurants didn't have the need for eight hour shifts. Government in the last ten years (maybe more) started to collect taxes on tips as it became more trackable with the use of debit cards. This is about to change back to the way it was previous, no taxing on tips if president elect, Donald Trump is able to get the legislatures to sign off on no taxes again on tips. The upper crust restaurants in major population cities in America who work professionally just as waiters, can earn anywhere from the seventy thousands to ninety thousands and even over above a hundred thousand to one hundred twenty thousand and more. Now, the question begs, at what limit will any legislation if approved for not taxing tips be set at? Will it be twenty thousand, thirty or fifty thousand, this remanins to be seen. So, a little history on tips in America. 🥸
@antaine19165 күн бұрын
In the US, you don't tip in fast food places because there's less work for the people that work there (you get your own food at the counter and you bus your own table). Fast food workers make full minimum wage. At a regular restaurant where they bring you your food and you leave the dirty plates on the table for the workers to collect, you tip. Those restaurants pay less than the minimum wage because they assume the waiters will get tips. If the workers' tips don't equal the minimum wage, the restaurant has to pay them them difference, but a waiter not getting enough tips to equal or better minimum wage probably won't be employed very long because they must be doing a very bad job (most Americans will only refuse to tip if the service is very bad). Workers who make the lower wage + tips end up making much more than the standard minimum wage, so they're actually better off than they would be with the minimum wage but no tips.

If you haven't seen it yet you should watch a video on how our national anthem was written. Also, the older i get, the crazier the world gets, the more i appreciate this country. I didn't realize until within the last couple of years how great the US constitution is, particularly with our first amendment right to free speech. Watching what is happening in other similar countries with regard to free speech is just crazy to me. I've heard so many people from other countries talking about how they wished they had legal protections similar to ours regarding free speech. And even though some people in the US are trying to push against it, i think more of us support our constitution than not.

Tipping at USA restaurants really depends as the video logger suggested, if the person provided a service. At a pizza restaurant, if you sit down at a table and a waitress (waiter) took your order, brought you your silverware, plates, drinks, and the pizza to your table, you should tip. At the same pizza restaurant, if you approach the clerk at the desk with the cash register, the clerk provides the drink and pizza in a cardboard box, and you take out the food from the restaurant, you should not tip. The clerk did not provide a personal service. With home delivery from the same pizza restaurant that you phoned or texted your order in, you tip the delivery person for providing the service. This way the pizza restaurant charges everyone the same for the food, and you provide the tip for personally service. At most fast food restaurants, it’s more like take out even if you sit down at their table. Because they did not serve you at the table, you do not have to tip.. You could just as easily take the food out and eat it in your car, at a park, or at home.

"Montana is cold" - LOL. Montana is directly south of southern Alberta, which can get very hot in summer. It's hardly the Arctic there. Ice in slurpees and slushes in summer is a necessity. I'll concede that, even though I never put ice in any other of my drinks.

The sales tax is charged by local and state governments so it’s not going to be on the “national agenda” very often. And the main reason for not including it in the shelf price is that it would make advertising prices essentially impossible for the manufacturers and chain stores.

actual food like bread is not taxed. Apples and fruits, veggies, dairy, meat, and other stuff is not taxed. Prepaired food like in restaurants is taxed because it is an optional service. Now, if you're buying somethings for like an office party, and your company is tax exempt, you don't pay sales tax.
