The US emission laws are based on vehicle size. The BIG trucks are not necessary, small trucks are as strong. The trucks get bigger so the manufacturers "follow" the EPA laws.

I live in Maryland, but a lot of people here put their big trucks to good use. I drive an extended length E250 cargo van that is packed with tools and has a lumber rack on top. A lot of those big pickups haul lumber, tools, building supplies, farm supplies, horse trailers, etc. Yes, some appear to be big toys for office workers, but many of them are used to haul boats and trailers too.

When I was growing up, whenever we left the house, my mother ALWAYS said to me, "Mind your manners, and remember your pleases and thank yous." Over and over, up until I hit college. Even though religion has waned over the decades, most Americans are still taught the Golden Rule "Do unto others as you would have done to you." It's why we're polite and typically friendly. One thing I've also heard is that we make and hold eye contact and will engage in conversation with strangers at the grocery store, etc. 😊

I'm calling bullshit. Even in the South were manners use to be huge, people are quite often (especially in places like grocery stores) completely self absorbed and inconsiderate. They act like they're the only ones there as they put their earbuds in and listen to music or talk on the phone while they leave their cart in the middle of the aisle and walk 30 feet away. They hold conversations dead in the middle of aisle, they let their kids run amuck and throw tantrums. It's the same no matter the city or state I'm in, people are largely more inconsiderate than show manners and common courtesy these days. A big pet peeve because our manners were so strict, I couldn't even wear a hat inside our home as a kid. Now in my 40s, I still say ma'am and sir, even to college kids serving me. You have to go to a real small country town to get any semblance of manners and courtesy, as simple as a thank you for holding the door open for them (or them not letting the door slam in your face).

She should have used a picture to show what she meant about big trucks. And she is partially right. There are a lot of guys who get lift kits and other stupid things to make their truck "bigger" when they don't need it. On the other hand, trucks are a tool. If you need to haul a small excavator, several horses, large trailers of hay etc., you NEED a large truck.

We have a small ranch. We regularly use our pickups to buy livestock feed in town and haul it home. Drive to the next town to buy building supplies (lumber, plywood, sakcrete, etc.). Hook up to the flatbed trailer to buy and haul hay home or haul machinery. Hook up to the stock trailer and haul livestock to the veterinary or to and from the sale barn. Last year, fenced off a section of the horse pasture for a goat pasture. Used the pickup to haul the fencing supplies (posts, rolls of wire, tools).

MOST truck owners don't need as much truck as they have. Pickup sales are 5x what they were in the 70s and it's not because every office worker in Kansas City is moving more yards of gravel. Most pickups are fashion statements occasionally used to move a sofa. Even people with camper trailers typically buy at least one class up from what would comfortably tow it. If it has a company's name on the side or the owner is a farmer, that's different. Bust most people just buy it because big and square is more masculine. An F250 is a BMW for Republicans.

I switched from a Ford F-150 crew-cab (sat 6 adults) to a GMC 2500HD, with upgraded rear suspension. The former could carry about a ton in its 6-foot bed, the latter about 3 to 4 tons in an 8-foot bed. In addition to being able to carry full-length lumber and sheet goods, the biggest difference is that the 2500 can simultaneously pull an 8-ton trailer load (even on long, steep uphill grades). The F150 had serious towing issues, as its transmission and differential weren't capable. The 2500 is also a crew cab, sitting 6, and its total dry weight is around 7200 lbs. - a massive truck indeed. Total load, including the truck itself, can go up to about 16 tons. I have worked in the engineering and construction industry most of my life and this newest truck fits every one of my needs and is, in my opinion, "the last truck I'll ever own" (it has been that dependable and capable). So... her comment that "nobody needs a truck that big" is totally incorrect.

Nice set up. But you have to admit that the VAST majority of folk driving the larger Pickups the last 15 to even 20 years buy them and don't actually use them for much of anything practical....Most of the folks I personally see operating them (I want call what they do "driving") do so poorly overall. Can't stay in their lanes, fit them into parking spaces, back them up (Even WITH the cameras), and couldn't tow anything safely if their lives depended on it. Several of my neighbors regularly run off of their own driveways and their unlined beds are pristine after a few years!?!

Its usually people that do no manual labor or hire people for everything that say things like "no one needs a big truck"... Its the guy with the big truck you call when its time to move, or need help with a trailer etc. Plus I cant count how many guys I know that depend on their trucks to make a living, basically mobile tool sheds and shops in every configuration you can imagine. They are very practical... but like anything else, can also be an over the top excuse to show off.

The only place where you don't see a ton of big trucks are in big cities like Manhattan, where trucks are considered "hillbilly" vehicles 😂 She's wrong that nobody needs a big truck. By the way I grew up in the country and worked in various fields from office, warehousing building etc... The reason we don't begrudge other people's success as much as some places is that we feel the opportunity to succeed exists for everyone that works hard and makes the effort. Just because you win doesn't mean somebody has to lose. If anything, it should provide motivation and inspiration for you to try harder to also achieve that same success. America has made extraordinary efforts over the last 50 to guarantee that the opportunity to succeed exists for everyone. It doesn't mean that everyone will succeed, because many won't do what is necessary. But it means it's possible if you put in the work and it remains a key part of the American Dream

I think one of the biggest mistakes, specifically Europeans and Anglo countries, make about Americans sharing their accomplishments is thinking it’s always bragging. Sometimes there can be some bragging battles, but typically it’s at a party during small talk and doesn’t really mean much. Really whenever someone notes an achievement, whether it’s theirs or someone else, it’s typically because we are a culture that lives to celebrate any good achievements. Most tactful Americans know not to bring it up if the mood doesn’t call for it, like someone’s pet died would be a bad time to bring up anything that further distresses the other person. Generally though, I think this is another aspect our culture had to instill to get recognition when it came to building a new civilization in a hostile world. *ANY* skills or positive outcome was always refreshing to hear and it likely helped small communities have an upbeat attitude. We just have managed to keep it up even after going throw our low moments in recent years. For the most part, we just love to share any good news to those we care about, so it’s mind boggling how this is frowned upon so many of our allies as if we brag. We do brag about our country though, mainly because we sincerely do love our nation, that’s not a secret lol.

When you get out into rural areas where there may not be an improved road where you want to go, a big truck with 4-wheel drive is almost a necessity. Be it in a farm field, or in the desert, you're gonna want a large truck. Just watched a video called "Hollywood in my Backyard: 9 movie locations" from the channel @Ghost Town Living and he was driving his 4x4 Chevy truck on these mountainous and desert roads. Drive through started in USA 1920 and became popular 1940s not in 90s. Also the convenience of a large house is that you can use those extra bedrooms as office, exercise room, diva room, man cave etc. Using debit (checking account ) cards is so convenient. I haven't used cash in years. We need pickup trucks. Almost all families have a truck. We need it for hauling large purchases, landscaping items (furniture, mulch, plants, trees, trash). I have lived in France, Germany and Italy. I have found that many Europeans are critical of each other and their accomplishments. Critizing their clothes, their weight, hairstyle, ethnic background, country of origin.....I remember once seeing this group of people playing tennis. This French woman next to me stated " Look at Ithem showing off". I was confused on why she would say that. FYI I was born in France. Moved to USA when I was 18 years old.

Big trucks are less about need than utility. Most American cities are spread out enough that almost everyone needs a vehicle. For the many American families that have multiple children and/or pets, they need a larger vehicle to fit them all. If you find yourself doing any of the following activities more than a handful of times per year, it makes sense for that larger vehicle to have a truck bed: camping, four wheeling, hunting, buying/freezing a half cow, hauling lumber for woodworking, helping friends (or yourself) move furniture, cutting down and transporting a Christmas tree, hauling dirt/compost for gardening in the Spring/Summer, hauling trash to the dump, or donating large quantities of items for the needy. I work a cushy computer-based job from home - I am the definition of the guy that people make fun of, because my truck bed sits empty about 75% of the year. But I already needed the big car for my family, and I do the things I listed above anywhere from 10-30 times per year, depending on how many home projects I choose to take on. Even if I just rented a truck from Home Depot when I needed to do the hauling within the city, I can't imagine how I'd bring the deer or (if I'm lucky) elk I hunt to the butcher. The vast majority of big truck owners I've ever met are in the same boat. They're not contractors that need the truck bed every single day for their job. They're just people who happen to have a set of hobbies that make the addition of a truck bed to their large vehicle worthwhile. So I guess, in a way, having a truck is about buying what makes you happy - but the majority of the time, it isn't as arbitrary as "wanting a bigger house than you need." It's about not having to coordinate transportation every single time you want to engage in one of your hobbies.

Big trucks are necessary for a lot of people here for work, hauling etc. I personally don't enjoy driving them but I've definitely had to on occasion for necessary reasons.

Modern trucks drive just like a car. So much tech and cameras. Driving my Denali Ultimate is like a space ship compared to trucks even just 10 years ago. Trucks have drove nice for a lot time but nothing like they do now. The cameras are ridiculous can see everything I even have cameras that attach to or inside my trailers. So if I am hauling my enclosed car trailer I can see what is going on inside the trailer or I can put them on the outside and see everything. Hell it even drives itself with Supercruise.

Regarding convenience - I have a physical condition that makes it difficult to shop. Now I can put in an online order for my week's groceries and have them delivered to my car in the parking lot. U.S. should be a model for other countries.

Trucks being big is normally a necessity. Just because you don't see what they have to haul on a regular basis doesn't mean they don't have enormous equipment TO haul.

As an American I've only been to 27 states but I've been to nearly as many countries. It's so true that we have so much geographical diversity that you could explore our own country for our entire lives and never see it all.

I watched a few of your videos. You are quite genuine. Many Europeans hate Americans but I personally believe it’s unjustified. It’s stereotypes and many criticize for doing the same things they do. You kept an open mind. Thank you

While she's right that in the city (where she probably lives), you don't need a big truck, there are PLENTY of professions, especially in rural areas where they are incredibly helpful. All the farmers around where I live use them and they certainly need them. Especially when hauling things.

Yep. I was never a truck guy, but have to have one for my job. I have a tacoma with big tires.. Because I dont have that much to carry. It's enough room to carry the equipment and tires for the weather here. It's just functionality.

It’s the big truck with the lift kits, neon lights in the wheel wells, light racks on the roll bar, and the loud stereos. Those big trucks.

A Ford ranger is a small truck. A 150, 250, and especially a 350 are big trucks with crew cab, 4 door, and 6 foot bed

most people that actually use a truck for work get an 8' bed so u can fit full sheets of plywood and the like in the bed easily

Ranger is a midsize. F-150 is what’s considered full size.

Small education: Trucks are built in America with verious weights in mind which makes the trucks get larger as they need to have more pull capacity. 1) Economy (this is for the individual who wants to haul a small trailer or does small loads during the week). 2) Quarter ton pickup. 3) half-ton pickup. 4) Half-ton Dually, this is an extra set of wheels in the back so that it can increase the towing capacity like for livestock trailers or 5th wheels. 5) Full-Ton pickup, this is used for towing large flatbeds or for hauling a large load in the bed sometimes fitted with a PTO lift so that it can dump easy. 6) Any of the above with lift kits. Lift kitted trucks are for those compensating for the lack of something else.

Customer service is because when this country was young, people may not have had a shared language in the market, so greetings and thank you were learned in English. Even today in my clinic I have learned to say Good morning in spanish, Welcome in Swahilli, and Thank you in Spanish, Somalli, Igbo,Russian& Swahilli. My patients are amazed and really touched that we would even try to learn a word or two. THIS is why our customer service is king. We value 'service' and do not have a long history or population that ever had household servants. So the lack of classism is key. Respect goes both ways.
