We can't ignore the extensive urban planning that created modern Chicago. Unlike every other big city in America, Chicago had a chance to build itself from ground up after the Great Chicago fire. Urban planners put a lot of thought into how an ideal city would be built moving forward. Things like the street grid pattern that extends all the way out to the suburbs, keeping the waterfront a recreational space for the public, and especially the deliberate addition of alleys. The uniformity of the grid pattern not only simplifies travel, it significantly contributes to the aesthetic of the skyline. The lake shore is Chicago's version of a Central Park, except that its entirety spans from the North side to the South side. Even Lake Shore drive (LSD) itself was created for leisurely driving, which is why trucks are technically not allowed on LSD. Garbage is staged and collected in alleys (out of sight, out of mind), which is why the streets and sidewalks are are so much cleaner than NYC, where there are piles of garbage on the sidewalks and it smells like piss, vomit, and rotting food. Lake Michigan is clean because engineers reversed the flow of the Chicago River protecting the city's source of fresh water. Reversing the river flow remains one of the greatest civil engineering feats in US history.

New York is fabulous for the few people who can afford to live well there. Chicago has pretty much everything NY has, just maybe not as much of it. It is a smaller, nicer, cleaner and less expensive version of New York. Conde Nast has named Chicago the best big city in America for 7 years in a row! They aren't wrong. 🙂👏

I'm not from Chicago but I go quite often since I have family there. Chicago has a bad reputation, certainly has some bad areas, but for the most part it is fine. Chicago is the city that gave birth to the skyscraper and in my opinion is the most beautiful skyline anywhere. The variety of styles is incomparable, only new york has the same variety in styles . Chicago is also a city of neighborhoods, each of them with its unique characteristics. The loop is the main area and it is primarily business and office oriented, although there are lots of residential stuff too. Chicago is a city full of parks and shady boulevard. There are miles upon miles of green spaces along the lake with plenty of activities, including beaches. It has some of the best museums and shopping. If you enjoy sports, you have them all. If you like theaters, you have state street, I mean the amount of amenities this city offers is just mind blowing. The Cubs had a historic beginning and were very successful early on but they faltered after 1945 and had many bad years but it was always fun to see them play as they had some great players. In 2016, after 100+years they finally won the World Championship. Something like 3-5 MILLION people showed up for their parade and party!!🎉 Today, they are so-so but continue to live on. I wouldn't call the summer comfortable nor the weather pleasant. The summers are usually humid in July and August. Starting in October it typically gets cold and rainy. Then brutally cold in January and February. Nights are typically still in the 30's or 40's until May. Our weather usually sucks, which is why we really enjoy the good days. Although, the last year or so the weather has been better than average.

I live in Indiana about 3 hours from Chicago and it is one of my favorite big cities, I have been there many times, so many things to do there but if you go in the Winter you better buddle up, it is cold! Deep-dish pizza is great!! I prefer Giordano's and Gino's over Lou Malnati's but all of it is great!! Definitely do the Architecture tour. We did it one evening and they had fireworks over the water -- amazing!

Deep dish pizza is made in reverse. Cheese and toppings on the bottom and sauce on the top. Lou Malnati’s is indeed one of the best. But most Chicagoans don’t eat deep dish unless people are visiting us. Trade Chicago pizza is thin crust, often called Tavern Style, which is always cut into squares and never triangles.

One of those gorgeous views she got on LSD (Lake shore drive) is just behind the Field Museum of Natural History. Earlier this year I was visiting the musuem for member's night and had an hour to kill while they set things up, and one of the things I did was just... lay down on the grass and enjoy life. Definitely would recommend, both visiting the Field (World class musuem) and just... relaxing on the grass near the lake. Edit, I should specify that this was before the Cicadas began their invasion this year, hence why I was actually able to ENJOY the outdoors.

As someone who grew up outside Chicago and still lives here to this day, I definitely recommend it for anyone visiting America for the first time. I am from Chicago. Deep dish pizza is for tourists. The REAL Chicago pizza is called "tavern style", it comes cut into tiny squares. You get it from a "Mom and Pop" pizza place near your house. There will be 5 or 6 in your neighborhood, you just have to find the one you like. There are so many things to do and see in Chicago that a month wouldn't be long enough. Chicago has over 60 museums, and the Chicago region has around 150 museums across multiple counties, Every professional sports team, and more beach than any other city in the world.

Chicago native here: deep dish is excellent, a real meal pizza. Tavern style is fine but this "deep dish is for tourists" nonsense has to stop. Also Lou Malnati's is great, but Pequod is the top of the pizza universe.
@Jude743 ай бұрын
I don’t like calling it to tourist pizza because we all had it even though we’re from here. We called it special occasion or company pizza in short you only have it when you had company or at a party because a single piece is basically a meal. It’s almost like a casserole. The pizza we have regularly is tavern style super thin. Because deep dish was just too heavy for daily consumption. It’s special occasion pizza. Also, the pizza existed for decades before they started talking about it as a tourist thing. So just automatically saying it’s for tourists not really true. Also, Pequods exists so that kind of detonates your argument that we only eat tavern style. It wasn’t till recently that I saw tourists going there and the locals are not happy about it by the way. Go to Lou’s leave this place alone. It takes forever to get a pizza now.

I've lived in the suburbs my entire life. I worked downtown for 13 years. One summer I was put on nights (electrician)...the city sidewalks are pressure washed nightly. The landscaping (mostly plants in middle of some streets medians and around buildings) get maintained every night. I recall Al Michael's who visits only when the Bears are on MNF...said Chicago is the cleanest city he's ever visited and Chicagans should be proud.
@jonrmartin3 ай бұрын
I'd say after the architecture, the cleanliness of our city is the top thing my friends and family have noticed about Chicago when they come to visit from out of town. I work overnights in the Goldcoast and take Lake Shore Drive to and from Rogers Park, at least once per week the entirety of LSD has its medians and shoulders cleaned up. I grew up in Tacoma, Washington and later Nashville, Tennessee and had no idea a city could be so clean. NYC gets the tag of "the city that never sleeps" but Chicago has a bit of that too, every night a huge team of city workers go out and clean up the highest trafficked areas.

I grew up in Gary Indiana but frequented Chicago a lot from childhood till roughly 4 years ago (I now live in Canada), and the city has changed quite a lot over the years but not in a bad way. I remember it having a different feel in the early 90's then in the 2k's is when (in my opinion) seemed to become more modern. As dumb as it sounds there's almost too much to do in Chicago but that is by no means a flaw, simply put if there is something you want to do there is an extremely good chance you are able to do it in Chicago. The architecture is definitely something of amazement, doesn't have a run of the mill city look where most buildings are essentially the same. Furthermore it is quite diverse and one of my favorite places to go there is Chinatown, even just that small section has a lot going on. I implore you to watch more videos of Chicago to get a better look at everything else, definitely worth spending time watching. Great video!

The Great Lakes region is sometimes called the North Coast of the US (and Canada's South Coast), because there is so much international shipping traffic and the lakes are so danged big (over 20%of all the World's fresh water) that they act like fresh water seas.

Public Transportation within Chicago is great... and there is the South Shore train that can get us from South Bend Indiana (100 miles East of Chicago on the other side of Lake Michigan), but outside of the area Public Transportation becomes sparse to non-existent. The US is so big so often times we are driving two or three hours in each direction to go to Chicago, Indianapolis, Detroit, or Grand Rapids. All great destinations, but Chicago is the only one that we can just hop on a train to visit.

One tip if you have more than a few days here--after eating the obligatory deep dish pizza and Chicago-style hot dog, venture out into the neighborhoods and try a cuisine you may not find at home, such as Ethiopian, Ukrainian, Egyptian, Venezuelan, Kurdish, Moroccan, etc., as well as authentic and more conventional Greek, Polish, Indian, Pakistani, Spanish, Japanese, Chinese, and of course Mexican. You can find virtually any sort of restaurant here, many hidden gems.
