My son talked me into trying chicken and waffles, and I thought it was just so-so. It was edible, it wasn't disgusting, but that's as far as I'll go. I haven't had it since then, and I don't feel like I'm missing anything. The thought has never crossed my mind that I want to have it again. I really don't see what all the fuss is about. It must be a southern thing. Since southerners like to eat chitlins, which are the tubes that pig shit passes through on its way out of the body, I can imagine that chicken and waffles is a huge improvement, though. At least it's fairly normal.

The earliest known version of chicken and waffles is attributed to the Pennsylvania Dutch community in the 1600s, where they served waffles topped with pulled chicken and gravy; however, the modern association with fried chicken and waffles, popularized as a soul food dish, is largely linked to the Wells Supper Club in Harlem, New York, which served it in the 1930s as a late-night option for jazz musicians, and is predominately popular among Black Americans.
@samwaldorf8777
@samwaldorf8777 Күн бұрын
there is no such thing as "soul food". its just a euphemism for typical southern comfort food. take for example, fried catfish. "soul food". everywhere in new england you can find the typical english style fish and chips, for obvious reasons. however in the deep south you didnt have access to the same types of fish, so what was available was adapted to a southern version. the cornmeal coating is used also due to availability of the crop; hence, grits, cornbread, et cetera being common southern food. but fried catfish is just a regional take on a traditional english food. it doesnt magically become "soul food" because black people like it.
@samwaldorf8777
@samwaldorf8777 Күн бұрын
the same can be said for cajun food. everybody always tries to say it has some major african influence. the same africans went all over north and central america where the food has no similarity. the ACTUAL difference in the influence of the food is the acadian french. i hate when people try to just make stuff up to prop up black people. give them credit where credit is due, but just falsely attributing things to them always demeans the actual groups responsible. historical accuracy should be important to people.

I'll admit that when I heard of chicken & waffles many years ago, I thought it was weird, but decided to try it since it was so popular. The combination was really good. I think the attraction of having fried chicken & waffles is mixing sweet and savory flavors. You add butter and syrup to the waffles and have a side of gravy to dip your chicken into. You can taste each separately or mix them to decide which way you prefer. So yes, I would recommend you try them. Another dish you might research is scalloped potatoes. Delicious, whichever recipe you use (and there are multiples to choose from). I never liked root beer but I do enjoy a Coke float (ice cream in a tall glass then fill it up w/Coke) but you can have a float with any kind of soda pop. I also don't like sweet potato casserole. I prefer savory sweet potatoes so I cut them bite-size, mix them with some oil and seasonings, then roast them on a baking sheet in the oven. Now, those I really love.

Chicken & Waffles is best with Maple Syrup. (10, Sweet & Salty) Chicken with Orange Marmalade is good, too. Biscuits & Gravy started in the South. Biscuits & Gravy are better known. Corndogs are best with Mustard but you can eat catsup on it. Grits with butter, a dash of garlic and add cheese. Yum! (Using this version as a side) Rattle snakes, Alligators, Squirrels are eaten but are not common. Leftover Meatloaf Sandwiches are awesome. Put mayonaise on both slices of bread. Cold Meatloaf. A slice of Cheese, Prefer American Cheese. Then Lettuce, Onion & Tomato. 😁 PBJ can be toasted. Sweet Potato Casserole is too sweet for many Americans but those that grew up in the South love it at Thanksgiving. Rootbeer, many Europeans think it tastes like medicine. When I grew up, we loved to make the rootbeer super cold and put a scoop of vanilla ice cream floated on top of it. Americans call that a Rootbeer Float, it's a classic!❤️

Just a very thin layer with an egg and cottage cheese in the center of the pie. It’s like a fruit cheesecake in a pie filling It’s good. You only have a small wedge of it. You don’t eat a half a pie. I never had biscuits and gravy like the south has, and I was born and raised in the in the Wisconsin. Then I moved to Florida. It wasn’t until I was in my 20’s that I tried it for the first time. Thank you, Andre.❤

I really enjoyed your passionate defense of corn dogs! I like to put a squirt of mustard right next to a squirt of ketchup and dip each bite in both. So basically mustard is enough on it's own, but I think you're going to want a yellow mustard. I believe you had stone-ground or dijon mustard in one of your cooking videos, but that a whole different flavor. You want smooth and yellow. Looking forward to chicken and waffles👍

Root Beer is delicious. I love it. If you try the chicken and waffles, the hardest part will be getting the chicken right (if you've never fried chicken before). Here's some info (this is the breading & technique I use): Day before: 1. If you're going to do strips, slice up chicken into strips. If you're going to use bone-in chicken, skip this. 2. Marinate overnight in buttermilk or some other tenderizer. (a salt water brine also works) Day of: 1. Mix your dry ingredients: (tsp = teaspoon) 1 tsp garlic powder 1 tsp onion powder 1 tsp sweet paprika 1 tsp salt 1 tsp black pepper 2 cups AP flour 1/4 cup cornstarch 2. Crack eggs (use just the whites for best result, but using yoke is ok) 3. Get out your chicken and drip some of your buttermilk around into your dry ingredients and mix it up to get some little doughy bits (these bits will form all those wonderful craggly bits). 4. Dip your chicken in flour->egg->flour->egg->flour, let them rest a bit. Making sure to let those doughy bits stick to the chicken. I usually leave them resting in the dry ingredients (and continue to re-cover them with it if the egg soaks through). 5. Heat your oil (I recommend Peanut Oil) to at least 350° F, a little higher is better. 6. Slowly lower a piece of chicken into the oil (let the last bit fall away from you to not splash yourself with oil). Do one at a time to not overcrowd the pan. If you crowd it or put too much in, you'll lower the oil temp too much and it'll soak into the breading instead of frying it! Important! (Also let the oil temp come back to proper temp in-between pieces if needed) 7. Cook each for several minutes, flipping at least once to ensure and even cook. You should be good when you see a nice golden brown crust (but you can check with a probe as well - chicken needs to reach at least 165° F for food safety). 8. Take out the pieces of chicken as they finish and drain them on a rack. Use paper towels under and also pat them dry a little to ensure no oil soaks in and softens the breading (watch your fingers with the hot oil). 9. Allow to cool for a couple minutes. If you made extra, be sure to allow them to cool enough that they won't produce steam or condensation in the container (the moisture will soften the nice breading you worked on).

14:53 · YES, PB&J is *always* better when the bread is lightly toasted. Plus, the heat makes the peanut butter melt a bit, so it's easier to spread (especially when using 'Crunchy', which is superior to 'Smooth'). BONUS TIP: Try a Peanut Butter & *Banana* Sandwich - peanut butter on both pieces of bread, with slices of banana in the middle. You will love it, I promise. 😋

In regards to Root Beer and similar flavors, about a hundred years ago when soda syrups and soda shops came into being, those same soda syrups were also used to flavor medicine, so what might be a soda/candy flavor in the US is a medicine flavor elsewhere. In regards to food in general, use Alton Brown as a reference, he's a food expert from the South, and he did a lot of DIY cooking methods on his Good Eats show, like how to build a smoker.

I love the fact you've tried so many traditional meals. These are the foods we loved as children. So yeah, you really are one of us. Thing is, with traditional, and weird foods the reason we started eating them is usually the same. It's what was there at the time. Yes, rattlesnake is tasty, but is not usual anymore, because there are more reliable forms of meat. Meatloaf will always be popular, because there will always be people who can't afford 5 steaks to feed 5 people. My mom fed 5 kids and 2 grown-ups with 2 pounds of hamburger, an onion, a bell pepper and 2 cups of breadcrumbs, an egg and milk. Made enough side dishes for us with 2 lg potato (mashed), some milk and butter, and 1 can of peas (add a little cornstarch milk and butter and you have creamed peas). Everything can be stretched. Yes, make whatever food you like, I will watch it. It's fun to see how other people see the foods we used to eat on a weekly basis look at it as beautiful and new. I still make meatloaf every week, I still bake cornbread, biscuits and gravy, and pies. And peanut butter and jelly sandwiches taste best (I personally believe, it's best on soft white bread, with boysenberry jelly. Served with a cold glass of milk. Milk makes it taste amazing. Also a root beer float (made with softened vanilla ice cream) is a creamy and delicious dessert. Sorry this was so long, but you are appreciated, and it's wonderful seeing someone respect our childhood memories and traditional meals (yes, I'm old)

Grits are a type of porridge made from coarsely ground dried maize or hominy, the latter being maize that has been treated with an alkali in a process called nixtamalization, with the pericarp (ovary wall) removed. Grits are cooked in warm salted water or milk. They are often served with flavorings as a breakfast dish.

Andre, we just lost our dear President Jimmy Carter at age 100. He forged a lasting peace between Egypt and Israel that endures to this day. He and his wife Roslyn spent their retirement building houses for the poor with Habitat for Humanity. He continued to teach Sunday School at his church into his 90s. In his honor, I am giving you his wife's recipe for Peanut Soup. (President George Washington also enjoyed Peanut Soup!) I hope you try it. My kids used to love this for a treat after they got home from school. President Jimmy Carter's Favorite Peanut Soup Melt two tablespoons of butter in a saucepan, then add half a cup of chopped onion. Saute the onion until it is soft and translucent but not brown. Add one cup of creamy peanut butter and heat it through until it thins down. Stir in one can of cream of chicken soup and blend thoroughly. Use the soup can to measure two cans of milk. Stir the milk in gradually, then heat the soup until it is steaming. If you want a little more flavor, you can sprinkle some chili powder or smoked paprika on top. God bless Jimmy and Roslyn Carter!

Nobody in the states thinks biscuits and gravy is weird. When doing chicken and waffles, you could do chicken tenders instead of bone in chicken. It’s easier to eat and dip in the syrup. Root beer is great when it’s cold. Also add some vanilla ice cream to make a root beer float.

I think it’s mostly a thing in the South. -There are many kinds of bread in America- I find the statement about Americans eating bread as strange very funny. It’s not true that Americans find biscuits and gravy weird, that’s just a normal food in almost all of America! lol -Everyone in America has had a corn dog! I prefer mine with ketchup. It’s a real American treasure. -I don’t like grits. They have a weird texture that I don’t like. -I’ve never eaten snake of any kind and never will. Snakes are evil! lol -I love Hershey’s chocolate. It’s smooth and delicious. -Meatloaf is what I had for dinner tonight. Enough said! -Every child in America has eaten peanut butter and jelly. Skippy is the best with grape jelly.Not toasted in my experience, lol -Pop-tarts are okay, but best when warm. I like the brown sugar and cinnamon best. -Rootbeer is my favorite soda, A&W brand is so good! On a hot day in a frosty mug it’s awesome! -Sweet potato casserole is always present at holiday meals. It’s a little too sweet for my tastes. Love your videos from snowy Indiana! Already 10 inches and still snowing. ❤️🇺🇸

I don't know where it originated from but it certainly wasn't North Carolina.

The thing to remember is that chicken is very flexible and can take almost any flavor profile, sweet, spicy, sour, salty, doesn't matter. So the sweetness of the maple syrup actually works quite well, and is balanced by the saltiness of the fried chicken. Since you are worried about salt levels, maybe just for your first bite only, sprinkle a tiny bit of extra salt to get the true experience, then eat the rest as low sodium for your health. Love your channel!

So the most common Peanut Butter sandwiches are PB& Honey/Jam/Banana. A thing to note is that PB&J can be made with preserves (Chopped fruit), jam (Crushed Fruit), or jelly (Fruit Juice) which are all very different texture wise. A good point to bring up is that medication in the US is typically flavored for kids, usually being Bubblegum, Cherry, or Grape because of this difference Root Beer doesn't have the same negative connection that it has abroad. Not to mention Root Beer is also a common flavor of candies so while not everyone likes it, nearly everyone in the US has had it at some point. A HUGE thing to bring up, A&W is the Sweetest root beer, the two most common (and honestly better) brands after A&W are MUG and Barqs. Mug is more of a middle ground between sweetness and flavor with Barqs being the least sweet and most flavorful of the big 3 brands. I usually flavor my mashed sweet potatoes with some Brown Sugar and Butter. (Mashed Sweet Potatoes is the start of Sweet potato casserole but is often its own dish) And Biscuts and Gravy is a much bigger thing in the South and Midwest than anywhere else with a lot of New Englanders and West Coast Americans finding it odd more than fully weird. Speaking of New englanders . . . How did Clam Pizza not end up on the list . . .

I love all your posts! From South Carolina here and LOVE grits for breakfast, the Southern style for breakfast is to serve with eggs, bacon or mild pork sausage, If you are REALLY Southern you mix them altogether. With grits most people don't follow directions well enough, first buy real grits not instant, you rinse them first to get what we called husks out (the outer part of the kernel) then cook until tender, another thing is you can buy smaller more refined grits. Grits are similar to what people in the north call "Cream of Wheat). Grits are actually eaten all around the world and is very popular in Afic, the Caribbean and parts of Asia, and in Europe Polenta is basically refined GRITS but eaten differently. Shrimp and Grits has become common at nicer restaurants across the U.S.A. now. I was born in Greenville and now live North of Greenville two miles away from Table Rock mountain in S.C. only 27 miles or 43 km from Greenville S.C.(believe it or not S.C. does have some beautiful mountains). Back to Shrimp and Grits, that dish began in "The Low Country" of S.C. near Charleston, Beaufort or coastal regions of S.C. after Charleton was settle in 1670. Biscuits and Gravy most often has small pieces of fried sausage bits mixed in. My family is half from Rhode Island U.S.A and the other half The Upcountry (now called Upstate) of S.C. My mother (26 y.o.) passed when I was a child so I moved to R.I. to be with my father there. My dad got to like grits when he was stationed in Charleston and often came to Greenville to spend time with my mother before they finally got married and Southern breakfast was one of two main meals for my southern family for the day which also included fruits as a side of which cantaloupe was the favorite. In R.I then you couldn't find grits anywhere back then (1970s). The Waffles and Chicken thing was popular in Virginia when we moved to Norfolk VA. when my dad got stationed there, also bacon too and we would dip the fried chicken or bacon which was almost always a leg in syrup but sometimes dipped in honey, which was my favorite. I recommend a popular S.C. dish called Low Country boil, and another twist on Boiled green beans that is very Southern but a bit unhealthy as many Southern food are but still Delicious is to boil your G.B.s with about a tablespoon or two (15 or 30mls) of strained bacon grease which is a staple that most VERY Southern families always save a bit in the refrigerator and you boil the greens until most of the liquid is boiled out and the G.B.s start to wrinkle. I have heard of people a long time ago maybe a hundred years ago or so where poor people in the South hunted and ate just about anything (yek) and once heard someone say that their great grandfather had ate it but I have NEVER heard of anyone anywhere in The U.S.A. eating it now. Just one more thing, in your other post on Greenville S.C. you wondered about us having Bears and snakes etc. and we do, from the coasts to the mountains, bears are often in my yard sometimes mamas with cubs, once I threw some stale cheetos across the street in the woods for the birds and went out the next morning and the bears were munching on them, another time my partner left some in one of our vans and a bear tried to get in it and left paw prints all over the door lol. We also have MANY snakes in S.C. including poisonous kinds including Rattlers, and Copperheads which C.H.s. I once saw a Black Ring Snake crossing our private road which was about "12" or 3.6ms long and FAT! We have many different owls and Bobcats, Racoons, Opossums, Fox, and Coyotes! I often have deer and once I counted 27 crossing the street but have never witnessed anything like that again as far as deer, another time a parade of about 30 Turkeys were walking up the street in front of my house which is in a remote area of S.C. mountains. When I was a kid living in Greenville in the 1960s we had a couple of A&W fast food restaurants where you drove your car into a space and ordered from a screen with all the things you could buy like burgers etc. into a mike on the screen (each car sace had a screen) and when your order was done teens would come to your car with your order on ROLLERSKATES. I always hated root beer and my grandmother in R.I. made and bottled her own, and personally even with vanilla ice cream on it, is was still awful to me but my Northern family loved it and is called a "Root Bear Float" YEK!!

Andre, please continue cooking American foods. You’ve done an awesome job in correctly making many of these dishes. I really enjoy watching you (and your wife) tasting the food. Try making everything you suggested, and also try the variations. I’m sure you’ll enjoy this fun culinary adventure. You may even like root beer floats (chilled root beer in a glass with a scoop or two of vanilla ice cream). I happen to like root beer (especially good quality root beer such as Henry Weinhard’s), but love root beer floats. There are also Coke floats (made with Coca Cola instead of root beer) which are also good and you should try. You can make floats with almost any soda, but root beer and Coca Cola floats are the most popular. Toast the bread for your next PB&J sandwich! It’s a revelation! Also try peanut butter on toast (my personal favorite). I’m sure you must have already enjoyed jellies, jams and preserves of all types on toast (which is still delicious). Never had rattlesnake and never want to. It’s very uncommon, but not unheard of. There isn’t a lot of meat on them and a lot of bones. Not worth it in my opinion. The way I’ve heard them used most is in a chili (a type of stew usually with meat, beans and chilies, etc.) To be honest, I can’t stand snakes. Period. So, I have some bias there.

There's rarely more than 1/4 cup left. (Josh usually has three bowls by himself. ) 1. Slice and fry the Spam (about 13 slices) then dice the slices. Set aside. 2. In the same large (12") skillet Make Rice-a-Roni Fried Rice according to package directions, then add the Spam and reduce heat to keep it warm until ready to serve. NOTE: For game night (6 people) I do 2 boxes of rice but 1 can of Spam is still enough. I hope you enjoy it. Greetings from Missouri.

@kyrataylor2035 fried rice is too easy to make instant. I like to make long flat slices of spam because it is easier to pick up with chop sticks. Use cold cooked rice. 1. Melt a stick of butter in a large frying pan or wok 2. Lightly saute 4 cloves of minced garlic, 2 tsp of black pepper. Mix spam and veggie choices in. 3. Add 4 cups rice and fry until the rice is no longer clumpy and evenly coated with butter 4. pour 1/4C of soy sauce on rice, mix until even 5. Make a well in the center of rice. crack 4 eggs into the well and scramble/cook eggs 6. Give it 1 last Mix. Garnish with green onion. Enjoy.

I think you would love it but my grandmother use to take Boneless Chicken & boil it until cooked thru then she drained it & pat them dry & then dip the filets into pancake batter she made & then fry them in a cast iron pan or sometimes she deep fried them until golden brown & it's very similar to chicken and waffles but i like that she lightly salted hers so it was savory, sweet & just a little salt is so good. I always like when my slices of bacon get some maple syrup on them so it's sweet & meaty savory & salty also so i say try whatever you can & it may sound crazy or look crazy but it might taste great but you wouldn't know unless you try it. We also have lots of flavors in pancakes like chocolate chips( i loved as a kid) or my favorite BLUEBERRIES, Blackberries, strawberries, crushed pineapple, diced peaches, or mango, or crumbled bacon or sausage & we have flavored syrups which i like blueberry but whatever your imagination can think of & of course you can make waffles as easy as pancakes if you have a waffle iron or you can buy frozen waffles (Eggo waffles are my favorite brand) which aren't too bad but i haven't really found frozen pancakes that are anywhere near as good as making them yourself. So I find pancake mix that you just add water or milk to. Have u ever tried a blueberry waffle ice cream sandwich it's really good or take 2 chocolate chip cookies & add vanilla ice cream to make a cookie ice cream sandwich & be sure to put back in freezer if the ice cream was too soft. TRY THEM all it might surprise you. 🧈🥞🍗🧇🧂🍦😍💜🙏

Chicken and waffles is a great idea! I have a few in-laws in the south and get chicken and waffles when we visit. It’s so good! Use lots of syrup! You’ll think you’re pouring too much but once you start eating you’ll understand. It you don’t want to b use so much syrup, real syrup can be pricey, you can dip your chicken and waffle to some on the side and you also won’t be putting as much sugar in your body. Meatloaf is also a good recipe to try. It’s easy to make and delicious. Au gratin potatoes are a great side to make with them. And some greens to make it a full meal. And thank you for adding your wife’s reactions! She seems lovely!

Yes, you need to try root beer float. Chill the glass, put a big scoop of ice cream in the glass, then pour the root beer over it to fill up the glass. Soooo good.

You can do peanut butter and jelly on toast. You can make it on white bread or wheat bread. You can make it on a croisant. You can make it on pancakes. You can make it with that Spanish bread you had once. Any bread will do. You can make it on sandwich bread, then use regular Portugese butter on the outside of the sandwich and then fry the sandwich in a skillet like a grilled cheese sandwich. Its good that way but once its hot it gets messy because the jelly will want to run out of the bread. But it tastes so good!

Put two pieces of bread in the toaster. Then put peanut butter and jelly on it. Serve with a cup of hot chocolate on a cold winter day. Very comforting.

Chicken and waffles is a tasty combination! Fried rattlesnake is pretty uncommon, the venom glands aren't included so you don't have worry about that. Root beer is fairly popular here, and root beer floats are pretty tasty.

If your making a float you should make an orange soda float & a root beer float so you can try both. It's so cool to watch it fix up like crazy when you pour the drink in ontop of the vanilla ice cream

I think you should make Chicken and Waffles. Don't forget the butter on the waffles (you can use Portugese butter!) and Maple Syrup over both the chicken and waffles! I love meatloaf! Especially cold leftover meatloaf sandwiches the next day. On white bread with mayo and maybe a slice of cheese. I do like root beer! And Root Beer Floats (Put a couple scoops of Vanilla ice cream in a mug. Pour Root Beer over. Enjoy!) There is also a variation (that I've never tried...) called a Black Cow, where you use Chocolate ice cream. I made Sweet Potato casserole for Christmas dinner (served with Ham). I had never done it before, and I didn't even use a recipe. Drained a can of sweet potatoes (You can also peel, dice, and boil fresh sweet potatoes until tender, then drain.). Put in an oven-safe casserole pan. Sprinkled with brown sugar. Dotted the top with chunks of butter. Sprinkled cinnamon over the top. Sprinkled chopped pecans generously over all. Baked at 350F (180C) until hot. Covered with marshmallows and put under the broiler just long enough to melt the marshmallows and brown them slightly. Be careful! The first time I tried it, the marshmallows burst into flames! I scraped them off, replaced the marshmallows, and was successful the second time!

This clipart video feels like it was made from a very narrow closed off part of the country that thinks everything America eats is bizarre, it feels like an alien made it. It talks like its American but constantly feels confounded by American things. "We've heard people in the south do something called biscuits and gravy, I know it sounds insane, and we agree but we've heard that some people enjoy it" that doesn't feel like an American would say that. I'd guess California but I'm pretty sure they have biscuits and gravy and peanut butter and jelly there.

I can find biscuits and gravy and chicken and waffles easily here in Los Angeles. I went to the South for a few weeks and didn’t see them on any menu in the places I was going. I thought that was funny. I think this video was made by someone British who moved to the US and is confused by everything new.

FWIW, I loathed root beer until I was around 12. For me it took repeated exposure to come to like it. It's still not my soft drink of choice, but I do like it. It absolutely has to be ice cold. Freeze your glass, refridgerate the root beer, then pour. Helps if the day is hot. And if you put a scoop of vanilla ice cream in the glass first, when you pour in the root beer it will be a treat🎉

Corn dogs are available at places where eating while walking is an advantage, such as shopping malls, fairs, and at the beach. A cold meatloaf slice with some mayo (catsup optional) and a couple of bread slices makes a great sandwich. I prefer the brown sugar Poptart right out the package. I think the toaster makes them oily.

If you want to try the root beer with vanilla ice cream, instead of a float, make a root beer Freeze. You mix the two together until it’s like a thick milkshake (you have to eat with a spoon!) 👍 And if you make chicken and waffles, be sure to butter the waffles with soft, room temperature butter before adding syrup

PB&J should have the peanut butter spread on both pieces of bread and the jelly enclosed by the peanut butter. This way, the bread doesn't soak up the moisture from the jelly and get soggy.

Do you have pig roasts? We do in Michigan. Louisiana has alligator roasts. When you made biscuits and gravy did you put sausage in your gravy? Perfection! Please put butter on your PB&J. Yes, toasting is good. We have root beer floats in Michigan. Get a mug, put in some root beer, and plop a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. Yum!

The way I like to make PB&J is to mix the two ingredients into one homogeneous mixture and slather it on bread. Sometimes with cut up banana.

from what ive seen in the midwest chicken and waffles and biscuits and gravy are very common and both very delicious. if youve ever had chicken with a sweet barbecue glaze its similar to the sweetness of the maple syrup. as for biscuits and gravy the gravy softens the biscuits and you get protein from the sausage in the gravy. ive even had it with bacon in the gravy and its something i eat weekly to this day since i was young

There are even chicken & waffle flavored chips here! That’s how popular the pairing is. I was so surprised to see so many commenters saying they never had chicken & waffles before!
