Unfortunately, all the actresses passed away. The actress who played Rose (Betty White) died the most recently in 2021, a few weeks before her 100th birthday. Another 2 great videos to check out with Sophia's (the "old lady") sarcastic humor is: "Sophia Petrillo: The OG Comeback Queen 👑 Golden Girls" AND "Sophia’s Best Insults Pt. 2 (Compilation) 🤣 The Golden Girls | TV Land"

You mentioned the accents - Sophia (the oldest lady) is a Sicilian immigrant to Brooklyn and has a Brooklyn accent. Dorothy, the tall one, is her daughter, who grew up in Brooklyn and also has a Brooklyn accent. Rose is from Minnesota, and athough the actress doesn't really use a Minnesotan accent she speaks with a more standard American accent. Blanche, the sexy one, is a southern belle from Georgia and speaks with a southern accent. So happy you loved the show! I grew up watching it, these ladies are the best!

I'm telling you I was raised on this show. It's totally worth watching the whole thing. Blanche never apologizes for her love life and the men that come and go in it. Rose is a not so smart country girl with a story from her little hometown for every occasion. Dorothy (the tall witty one) is a divorced retired teacher who oozes sarcasm and her ma is too old to care about hurting anyone's feelings but she loves her daughter and shows it by giving her a hard time. Quite frankly, I can't choose a favorite.

They were the best! The show aired from 1985-1992. You should see if you can see full episodes. You would love them!!! A lot of the jokes wouldn't work today. It was a groundbreaking show at the time. Sadly they all have passed away. Betty White (Rose) most recently in December 2021, just a few weeks shy of her 100th birthday. Bea Arthur (Dorothy) passed away in 2009. Estelle Getty(Sophia/Ma) passed away in 2008. Rue McClanahan(Blanche) passed away in 2010. Estelle Getty who played the older lady was actually a year younger than the woman who played her daughter (the tall one), lol. The concept is that Blanche (widow) is looking to rent out a room in her home as she needs the income to help pay the taxes on her home if I remember correctly. Dorothy (divorced) and Rose (widow) both answer the advertisement but Blanche is only looking for one roommate. Sophia is Dorothy's widowed mother who was living in a retirement home that burned down so at first, Dorothy was going to withdraw her application because now she has to find a place for her mother to also live but Blanche ends up deciding on everyone living with her. She has the room and with everyone on a limited income it would be a less expensive option if they all chipped in together. They all become fast friends and the best family and the show chronicles their lives together, with normal every day situations but also hot topics of the 80s and early 90s. This show and Designing Women were FABULOUS!

The pilot had Dorothy Zbornak (Bea Arthur)- the tallest, Blanche Devereaux (Rue McClanahan)- the Southern "Friendly" Bell and Rose Nylund (Betty White)- the sweet, "clueless" storyteller from the small town- St. Olaf, move in to share expenses. And they had a "house boy". But then Sophia Petrillo (Estelle Getty)- the petite, "take no prisoners", mother of Dorothy, got kicked out of the retirement home, "Shady Pines" and had no where else to go. Bea Arthur had previously had her own hit show "Maude", where Rue had played her next door neighbor. Betty had been on t.v. since the fifties, and worked with Rue on a series. And Estelle finally hit stardom on Broadway in her 50's prior to auditioning for the series.

This show was exceptionally popular in the United States for 2 main reasons. 1) the sitcom era usually focused on family dynamics usually tho it would be here the dad here’s the mom here’s the kids look at the shenanigans of being a family so quirky but at the end of the day they all love each other. (These shows tho expressly didn’t have old people unless it was like ‘oh look at how senile old people are they’re funny to laugh at but not relatable’ Simpsons -> family guy are satires of this trope. But Golden Girls really focuses on older women and how they can be best friends and how women can not only be fantastic comedians but how they can be both loving to each other or be crass and a little hen pickin. This was in an era where older women would be ignored in Hollywood given nearly no roles but this show showed that regardless of age women can still perform and still be fantastic 2) golden girls was show ALOT in gay clubs, because even if it was made in the 80/90s it was extremely positive and there’s scenes where the old women are exceptionally kind and understanding to gay people which was almost never the norm for these sitcom shows. The fact that there were reruns of the show helped gay clubs play them and have they shown. The over the top situations and sometimes the flamboyant nature of the old women and even how sex positive the characters were all helped the show connect with gay audiences which felt ignored and hated during these eras. To be called ‘an old queen’ was often rude as hell but this show showed that even if you were older or if you were witty or if you were a bit flirty and in a non stereotypical hyper sexualized or common way it could still work for entertainment and in day to day life. (Also Ryan Reynolds’s loves the golden girls because of the comedy - it is top notch- and in one of the Deadpool movies wears an iconic shirt promoting the show. In general this show really helped Betty Whites career and continued her career because prior to this she was getting very few roles due to her age but during and after this show she was cemented as a fantastic addition to any media)

The two characters you like best are Dorothy (the tall lady) and her mother Sophia. The lady who likes relationships (Blanche) owns the home they are all living in. Blanche and Rose as well as Sophia are widows and Dorothy is divorced. They are all living together to share expenses.

One of the best shows ever! They tackled some sensitive topics, not usually seen on TV, with humor. All great actresses. The lady who played Sofia was actually the youngest cast member.

I've never actually heard someone who is Portuguese speak English before. It's much further from Spanish than I expected. Hi! From Chicago, IL, USA! Also, yeah. Golden Girls is going to have some things in it that aren't OK today but it was ahead of its time when it came out. The actresses are all icons and it was revolutionary at the time as for a push for LGBT rights. (when this was filmed, that was the end of the acronym). Edit: Congrats on your new child! I wish you and your family the very best.

The Golden Girls is one of those sitcoms that has defied aging and seems to be loved by every generation

This show first aired when I was a teenager. I've always loved it! And all of the cast members had decades-long acting careers. And some of the references that you missed had more to do with the characters themselves than American stuff, I think. This was fun!

You're not crazy... it was a well written show. It was 4 women who were roommates. Trivia: the lady playing the Dorothy's (tall gal and the common sense character) mom, Sophia (shortest women full of quips) was actually younger than her in real life. Rose, played by Betty White, was the more trusting character, and Blanche was highly sexual and always looking for love. This was ground breaking when it came out... showing women of a certain age still being viable in life

I grew up watching this show. It was in its heyday around 1986 when I was 12. I didn't realize how rare and special the writing was on this show. I knew it was great, but didn't know it was so great that I would still be watching 40 years later. This montage heavily stressed Dorothy's acerbic wit, but all the characters were just as strong. You should watch full episodes from the mid to late 80's to truly appreciate that. It not only was incredibly honest and sharp humor, but it dealt with issues other shows wouldn't touch at the time. Aids, condoms, having a gay child, in vitro, chronic fatigue. They covered all the current issues and not in a trite, shallow way. The way they were all there for each other and basically became a chosen family was a wonderful story. All of these aspects made it the truly exceptional show that it was, and why it endures to this day.

I grew up watching the Golden Girls with my grandmother. None of them are still alive, the last one passed a couple years ago at 100. They all had long careers and were in other shows, but I loved them in this the most. All four lived together in Florida. Sophia is Dorothy's mother.

The Golden Girls had an advantage in the world of sitcoms. They could talk about almost anything, even if it was very controversial, because most people wouldn't criticize a group of women of their ages. One fun fact about this show, Estelle Getty who plated Dorothy's mom, the oldest character, was actually the youngest of the four women. Sadly, all four of them have passed away.

It is one of the best written sit-coms ever. Their dialogs are just top notch. You don't see this kind of smart funny writing nowadays anymore in sit-coms. This video focuses mainly on Dorothy (played Bea Arthur, and yes -she was tall). But they were all equal in the show. Dorothy is not more nor less "Main character" as the other ladies. Watch the whole show. You will love it.

You should definitely look up episodes of Rose's St. Olaf stories (the town she grew up in). Also, Sophia's (old lady) stories about Siciliy (Picture it! Sicily!)
@trumpiekeith85318 ай бұрын
I haven't seen anyone mention it yet. Sophia, Dorothy's mom, according to the premise in the show had had a prior stroke that affected the part of her brain that helps filter everything from passing your lips. So her character says whatever she's thinking and has some of the funniest and most outlandish lines.

It was absolute magic. Also the show would reference real places & situations in Miami. The head writer was actually born & raised here in Miami and used her experiences of growing up in the Miami area in a lot of the jokes, which were even funnier if you knew the context as we did living here too.

The characters all lived in the same house in Miami. The mother (short lady) the daughter (tall lady) and then the 2 other ladies are friends. One of the women owns the house. I remember my mother belly laughing at this sitcom!!!

Loved the Golden Girls and all of the characters were great. Blanche was the vain sexy Vamp who was always dating. Rose was the dimwit but with a good heart who came from the town of St. Olef where everyone was a dimwit and who she loved to tell stories about. Dorothy was intelligent and no-nonsense but didn't date much and the other s always cracked jokes about it and Sophia was Dorothy's mother who was this sharp tongued Italian grandmother who made up all these stories about a poor peasant girl from Sicily (according to her she was involved with Picasso and De Gaul). Blanche was from the South, Rose was from the Midwest and Dorothy & Sophia were from Brooklyn, NY.

Unfortunately they all have passed.😢 The one who played Sophia was actually the youngest of the group but died first. They all came from different shows. Blanche and Dorothy came from Maude. And Rose came from the Mary Tyler Moore show. Also Rose and Blanche were on Mama's Family before this. You should watch Mama's Family next. Same time period and its about a family living with their Mama.

This has got to be a top 10 American sitcom still after like 35 years. It is hard to pick a favorite. A perfect foursome. Rose and Blanche you have to get to know a bit to understand their humor. Otherwise Rose doesn't make sense and Blanche feels outdated because they do shame her a lot, but it doesn't feel as cruel when you see the love. Dorothy and her mom, Sophia, have a sharp tongued that can be vicious, but it is just genuinely funny. Yesterday my cat was sleeping on me and ran away because I was watching Golden Girls and laughing too hard. a great sitcom to watch with family! ❤❤❤

I loved this show growing up! I'll fill you in on this show, and nothing I say will spoil anything for you. This is all stuff you learn in the first few episodes. Blanche (I don't remember what job she worked; it's rarely mentioned) is a Southern belle who owns a home in Florida and after her husband passes away, she finds she can't afford to live there alone, so she gets roommates to help her pay the bills - and those are Rose (who does a variety of jobs over the years usually helping people or animals) and Dorothy (a school teacher). Dorothy's mom Sophia lives in an old folk's home called Shady Pines, and she often mentions other residents there or people she's known over the years (so a lot of times when you hear her say someone's name, it isn't anyone famous; it's someone she knows). Sophia, older than the others, visits the "girls" frequently. She's a grumpy old woman who has no filter and says what she thinks. Rose grew up in a small town called St. Olaf, and her comedic genius on this show is telling St. Olaf stories. You need to find a video of her telling her stories!!! :D Blanche loves men and is always on the prowl. Lol. Dorothy was married to Stan, who shows up a lot, and he left her for a younger woman but often says he still loves her. Dorothy is the smart one, Rose is a ditz (not very smart), Sophia is the grumpy one, and Blanche is the sex obsessed one. They are hilarious together! I love them so much and am glad you're getting to know them. It'd be better if you'd just watch an episode all the way through from beginning to end so you can get a feel for how the show worked, and then these clips will make more sense. :)
