Amen Brother. I only served my 4 in the 1980s USMC and appreciate everyone who steps forward to defend our nation and way of life. I think many people abroad don't understand the lesson we learned after Vietnam when people treated returning veterans badly because of their mere participation and following orders they cannot refuse. We learned that you can appreciate the service and sacrifice of the soldiers, sailers, and airmen without agreeing with the conflict we may find ourselves.

Some states are very abusive with their taxes on everything they can get away with taxing. I agree, gov takes out its tax before you get the left over pay .. then you are taxed every single time you spend what you did get. It needs to stopit.

Then being taxed annually on the property I bought, with the earnings that are being taxed on the income I already paid the tax on. Tariffs on top only make it worse. We are a country led by mules with the head jackass on top (not a shot at a particular party, both majors are guilty of this). As a citizen, my country is the US (shorter) and I am an American because It's the shortest way to refer to my citizenship. If it's more convenient to refer to my country or citizenship for whatever reason, I'll certainly give you the long form. But remember you asked for it. 4:30 More common as a pre- engagement engagement party, baby shower or wedding shower. Just a way of ensuring the couple has all they need before taking such a huge step. My opinion, pleeze don't roast me. 05:30 Unless you actually want to look thru the gaps, They're not that big a deal. If you do, you should be ashamed of yourself. The partitions serve the purpose. That being said, I prefer the privacy of a private john. 08:15 That would be because ' drugstore" and "Apotheka"have different meanings in US and European cultures. To you, it's where drugs are bought and sold, as a hardware store is for tools, nails and electrical switches, etc. Whereas for Americans a drug store started as places for cheap goods that didn't always perform as advertised. Snake oil salesmen dominated the market and products like Coca-Cola and cough medicine were addictive. We started rough, it took us time to catch up. To be fair, the same has been happening in our gas stations for at least 50 years. I remember my om buying milk at J&L gas stations at least 50 yeas ago. Forget "If you build it, they will come," fact is, "If you sell it, they will come." I love my neighbors, but they'll spend ten dollars to save ten minutes even if they're poor. 15:00 as far as tips go: The system works well from October thru December, badly January thru April and then as it should May thru September. Christmas puts a huge weight on the year and the debt it causes takes time to get used to or pay off. Americans are the most generous people when it comes to charity, but personal finances are a whole other can of worms. 18:00 I don't like the amount we spend on our military. I don't agree with the missions they're assigned a lot of the time. But I was a servicemember. I wasn't allowed to pick and choose my assignments or the orders I had to obey. I can separate the person from their role, respecting the first while disagreeing with the latter. We can differentiate the messenger from the message; this is no different. Only dorks, wannabes or would-be thieves of valor wear camo. Real heroes put that garbage behind them. Not to be remembered for the stack of enemy behind them, but the task they set in front. Just my thought.

André, lets say you have a sick child. You go to the pharmacy to pick up his prescription. Then you start thinking... your child needs more diapers and wipes, pedialite, applesauce, you're nearly out of laundry detergent and you need something to eat, too. You dont want to go to the big grocery store, so while you are at the pharmacy, you will pick up those items all in one stop. Also, for my regular prescriptions, I'll just go through the drive-through, pick up my prescriptions, and go. I don't have to go inside and get exposed to anyone else's germs.

The whole pharmacy-as-general-store concept starts to make more sense when you realize how far apart towns are here. If the next nearest town is a 30 minute trip away, and your town is so small that there's one pharmacist for the whole community, it may not make sense for them to have a store with all the upkeep and facility management expenses just by itself. So, putting a pharmacy area inside of a grocery store makes sense. From there, it's an easy skip backwards to putting a grocery store inside a pharmacy...

Ah, history. The pharmacy as the post office selling stamps, selling toys for use at a pool or the ocean plus towels, baby food, are a leftover from "blue laws". Once upon a time stores could not be open on Sundays. Then pharmacy stores were given a pass especially when it turns out when you go to the ER (emergency room) and get a prescription instead of them handing you the medicine. If you are in serious pain and want the pain killer toady not tomorrow, or want to start treating the issue you went to the ER now not later. For most especially small towns, they were the only place you could go on a Sunday so they also started carrying toothbrushes and toothpaste particularly for the out-of-towners. The stamps? Were also for tourists to be able to send postcards back home before leaving their vacation location. Depending on how small the town was often dictated just how much variety the pharmacy had, the smaller the town the more the pharmacy carried. That is also the reason so many gas stations carry a wild variety of products, they were the other store to be allowed to be open 7 days a week. So travelers would not be stranded when their gas tank was close to empty. You can still buy not just ice cream but toys to keep younger kids entertained while strapped in to seat belts these days. I remember the days when you had to stop and think on a Sunday if a particular restaurant or store was open in this state we were traveling through, or did they observe blue laws. Back then lots of families traveled for vacations. Just to see the amazing country that is the USA, its variety, depth and breadth. You can see both oceans, Atlantic and Pacific. See two or three seasons in a day if you travel from an area below sea level, like deep canyons, to the top of really tall mountains and we sure have some.

While some people do throw huge "gender reveal" parties and spend a fair amount of money, a lot of us Americans either don't announce it in a fancy way or we have a small party with immediate family. For example, my sister had a gender reveal party for 10 people with just pink balloons and pink cupcakes. Simple and cheap! 👌 As for "baby showers", those are parties that are usually thrown for family and close friends to help the new mother with expenses for the new baby. (We give them diapers, baby clothes, bottles etc). Expense varies

Regarding firearms, I live in an open-carry state and do occasionally wear a holstered pistol. Partly I do this to remain comfortable with the concept, and partly because I'm not about to pay my government money for a "concealed carry permit" when the right to bear arms is enshrined in our nation's constitution. As far as firearms carry, there are 29 states where you do not have to have a permit to carry openly or concealed. The rest require a permit, and several don't allow open carry, only concealed. There are limitations and in Texas unless you have a permit there are several areas that you can't carry without a license. I have mine, so I'm unrestricted and always carry concealed because I don't want to be and armed criminal's first target, I want to be the guy he doesn't see coming for him.

Yeah, in MS we have “Constitutional carry.” But if you want to carry in places like government buildings, sports stadiums or schools you need to get the “enhanced carry license”. I was shocked when I went into the court house to sign something for my daughters passport and there was a metal detector and two cops. I said I have a gun. I can go put it in the car. They said. “Do you have the enhanced carry?” I said yeah and they said “go ahead.” So I was like…well we got something right at least.

@@EWischan yeah that was my point. We can as well in 95% of the places, but there are areas “schools courthouses…etc where you have to have the “enhanced” to carry. So you CAN do it, you just have to get the permit. (Which is also helpful as you mentioned, when you go to other (reciprocal) states. If you don’t have to do that in TX. God bless Texas…even more. I’ve only been there a few times. My only complaint is the George Bush Hwy and DFW being a shit show and telling me I had “bomb residue” in my laptop bag…obviously I did not. So after being sexually assaulted…at least once they determined it was in fact “not bomb residue.” I had simply had a candle that had been lit before in my bag. Otherwise I love TX.

@@octoniumvideos Groceries are not taxed in most areas, ditto personal items like deodorant and toothpaste. Snack and junkfood are being singled out in many areas to be shifted into a taxable category (basically, items the average person will 'prepare' are not taxed while something an average person might eat while shopping would be; sandwich ingredients not taxed, a handmade deli sandwich would be). But it's a state and local level decision, and a few states do still have sales tax on all grocery and/or personal hygiene items, not just snacks. Illinois just approved eliminating grocery sales tax, Hawaii has an excise tax (this is a mess related to shipping stuff to the islands, long story), and I think ten or fifteen states have either state-level and/or local-level sales tax on groceries.

To clarify: if you have a supermarket with a pharmacy in it then the pharmacy is a different company (though often owned by the same parent company). A lot of Europeans find it more convenient to simply know how much they'll have to pay, regardless of how much is tax. I think it makes sense for us to know how much of the price we pay is the government stealing from us. It's probably why European politicians get away with raising taxes so high, because the people don't directly see how much it's costing them.

This video talks about lowering the voting age in the 70’s. My mom was in high school at the time, and told me couple of stories from back then. This was during the Vietnam war. During some time in the 70’s, when you turned 18, you would be old enough to go to war. Many young adults were forced to go to war, a lot ended up dying their first day. She told me that there was a common argument that people started to protest and speak up about: And that was the fact that at 18, you would be eligible to go to war, but at the same time, you weren’t eligible to vote. A lot of people found that ridiculous and for a good reason. (Also, my uncle turned 18 just days before they stopped sending people to go to war. You have no idea how lucky he was)

As a US citizen, let me tell you that anti-war does NOT mean anti-military. There's a specific, small, and loud segment of the population that wants to be involved with wars. The majority of the citizens, however, prefer peace while supporting a strong military to make sure we don't get invaded. The USA is a big country, with a relatively small population. Based on population density, we're very, VERY vulnerable. We make up for that with a powerful military, and having more privately owned guns than we do citizens. While many countries like Israel or Korea have a requirement for everyone to spend a minimum amount of time in the military, we don't, but when it's likely that anyone you meet on the street is armed in a country of 300+ million, that makes invasion seem like a bad idea.

About free refills for soft drinks, the cost is very low for the store and much more convenient for them. The soda machine is hooked up to a water line, and a tank of carbon dioxide for the "fizz", the different flavors are bought in small (about 12 to 15 liter) stainless steel bulk tanks containing the sugary goo used as the basis for each brand (Coca-Cola, 7-Up, Fanta, etc.). It's mixed on demand and allows the store to operate without having their employees lug heavy cases of bottled soft drinks around, possibly even resulting in fewer back injuries.

To clarify a point on our Constitution: the 2nd Amendment does not give us the Right to own a firearm. That right is granted to us when we're born, or when a person becomes a US citizen. The 2nd Amendment prevents the government from infringing on that Right. I know it sounds like a subtle difference, but to us, it's a huge difference. An armed populace keeps the government polite. Andre', American also has a strong hunting culture. All the men and many of the women in my family hunt. Guns are only part of this. Keeping the land and God's yummy animals healthy are also part of this culture. Americans aren't gun crazy. There is a largely inner city, criminal sub-culture that acts like the crazy people in the movies. Most gun owners are people like my mom, uncles or best friend. A gun is a tool, for hunting, protecting farm animals from predators.... They may enjoy shooting sports -- my friend spends a couple hours every weekend shooting on a target range. To actually clarify a point in our Constitution, the 2nd Amendment guarantees the right to "keep and bear Arms" so that citizens can serve in a militia, a clause that has been deliberately misinterpreted. "Keep and bear" does not mean "own", it means you can have a weapon in your home. "Arms" means weapons, not necessarily firearms. A "Militia" is clearly defined in Article I as a civilian military branch that Congress can call on (i.e., the "bear Arms" part), and which today is the role of the National Guard. So what the 2nd amendment actually says is that citizens have the right to store weapons in case the militia is called up, but since the Militia role has been filled by the National Guard, this amendment no longer has any real relevance. But no politician will ever say this.

Bro, I am an American and it’s just understood that you don’t try to peak through the bathroom door gaps. The only excuse for this is a quick glance to check if it is occupied, even then you start by looking for the person’s shoes through the bottom gap first. The worst bathroom I was in was while I was on deployment in Afghanistan and the “door” was just a curtain that had a rather large bottom gap and would open slightly every time someone would walk past.

It's kind of nice in other countries that you're not going to have to do active shooter training in school and at work. The gaps are big so children can't lock themselves in the stall or pinch their fingers and do major damage to themselves. I witnessed a child getting injured and not being able to open the door in a mall bathroom and the mall immediately changed the stalls to prevent lawsuits in the future. The parents couldn't get under the door until a maintenance person could remove the door. My Canadian sociology professor in college used to make fun of American healthcare until her son got a benign infection that in America, he would be seen and treated with little consequence, but since healthcare is "free" in Canada, it is sub-par and you wait months to get in. Her son died of a routine simple infection. Now she is all for market-driven healthcare. When you can afford to pay your doctors and nurses more, you get better and more doctors and nurses. They can see more patients, sooner. We actually get a lot of Canadian nurses here because of that pay difference.

In my experience, bathroom stall gaps are usually like 1 cm. The only way you're actually making eye contact with someone doing their business if if you get RIGHT UP next to the door (which would immediately flag you as a creep). Also, because of how shallow the stalls are and how the angles play out, realistically if you see anything it's like a knee or the side of their head. I don't really mind too much, since it's useful for telling the difference between a door that closed itself with no one inside and an actually occupied stall. Ultimately I care more about whether the close mechanism on the door is working (sometimes they don't and then you're holding the door closed) than that tiny gap.

Now, as a 17 year old who hunts with my husband, he knows how to safely handle a firearm. NOWHERE in the USA is the sales tax that high. It ranges from zero in a handful of states, to a maximum of around 10 percent. Where I live in New York City, the sales tax is 8.875%. Twenty percent is what you guys pay in Europe. In most states you also don't pay sales tax in essentials like food. So when you see something in the supermarket that is $10, you pay $10, just like in Portugal.

I recall smaller pharmacies didn't use to sell milk or other groceries. When the big chain pharmacies came in a small city, they had some groceries in a cooler display such as eggs or milk or dry goods on the shelves. The eggs are washed of the natural coating before they are sent to the stores and have to go in refrigerator. Some gas station also sell eggs, milk, and carry a limited amount of fresh produce such as apples and bananas as well as some basic medications such as pain relievers. When I was younger the gas stations were smaller and a few still had service stations for tire repairs and maintenance if you had an issue on the highway. I detest the stall doors in a bathroom. The gaps are annoying! I'm a lady and have seen college bathroom stall doors so short, anyone could look over it while walking past. The maintenance department made them. Hanging shower curtains would have been more practical. The law for raising the legal drinking age was tied federal funding for interstate highways. I think Louisiana was the last to raise the age. Some tipping has been become mandatory. If there's more than 8 people in a dining party, a restaurant includes tipping in the bill. Have known of some companies pay for 40 hours with a fixed salary but require employees to accomplish more part of the year by working 60-80 hours in a week without compensation of time off or money. Employees tend to burn out. Sales tax varies on items and the amount. In one state it's 7% for any groceries. In another state fresh food, which would need to be prepared and stored at home from a grocery store, is not taxed but something that is ready to eat as a meal is taxed. Gasoline and car tag registration pays towards roads. Home owners are taxed for schools. There is some cross over how the taxes are used. We don't have television or radio taxes beyond the initial purchase of the item. Does Europe charge this annually? I remember it was cheaper to purchase an electronic item without a radio than a similar item with the radio. I'm used to writing the date either way if I know my audience. Was taught to write the month first, then the day. Medical debt is a travesty. We don't know how much the bill will be or how many vendors will charge the patient such as the doctor, the hospital, anesthesiologist, medications, etc. Sometimes the billed insurance rate is higher than paying a cash option. For a minor checkup of patients who rarely use insurance, cash/debit payment is often better than filing it to insurance. I have recipes from Europe that use table and tea spoons as a measurement. There is actually a standard for the size which I realized when reading a historical fiction about a silversmith. Beyond that weight vs measuring cups, are something I use interchangeably. For science, we use metric measures. Large bottles of soda are sold in 2 liter containers. Otherwise, we are used to using the imperial system in everyday life. The inch, foot, yard, mile and other measures were standardized a long time ago. A foot isn't my foot length but a set measurement.

In the county in my state of South Carolina, we charge 6% on non food/non prepared items. An additional 1% is on non-food and non-pharmacy items to buy land and save it from construction. So a box of sealed donuts will be $3.99 and stay that at the register. Donuts fresh from the bakery are a "prepared food" and will be $1.19 + $0.06 per donut at the register. It confuses people on the medical cards when they have to suddenly cover taxes. On top of that, we have the SNAP program and the EBT card given out for SNAP benefits doesn't cover hot prepared food or taxes, either. With all this complication, we can't just shove the tax into the item in the store.

Howdy from Texas. Here in America a four day work week would for many Americans mean only four days of pay as well. Which would force most to go get a second or even third job. Not a great idea in reality. In regards to sales taxes. Here in America there is no national sales taxes. Sales taxes are set by each state. And at least here in Texas, sales taxes at least. There are zero sales taxes put on groceries from the supermarkets. Unless food is hot and ready to eat, businesses are not allowed by state law to charge any tax at all on groceries. It's much better if you think of each state as it's own independent country as far as taxes and laws go.

Also I've been a cook for over 30 years. Servers in restaurants make FAR MORE MONEY THAN AN HOURLY PAID EMPLOYEE. EVERY SERVER MAKES MORE THAN THE HIGHEST PAID COOK. The servers do not work a lot of hours in America. Most work 30 hours or less and make double or triple the weekly pay the cook makes for 40-50 hours. I've seen servers make 200 plus a day at a small hometown restaurant, and 350 a shift at a college bar during the weekend.

I absolutely love that you made the point about the transparency in adding tax instead of including it. Our sales tax is far less than Vat, and i think part of it is that transparency. Excise taxes are included in the price of things like cigarettes, gasoline, etc. This are often higher than the sales tax, but few people have any clue of what the tax is on those items. It is easier for the government to keep increasing taxes when it is included in the display price. People don't even think about it.

Our appreciation of our military is intentional to make up for a great sin. During the Viet Nam war, radical anti-war protestors would gather to 'greet' soldiers as they came home. They'd jeer, boo, throw things (like rotten food), insult (calling them things like 'baby killers' and 'murderer'), and SPIT on the soldiers as they made their way out of the airport. Anyone in uniform was a target and they could be attacked anywhere; including in restaurants, in grocery stores, or walking down the streets. Many of these people had just suffered the worst year of their lives, were injured, and/or deeply psychologically scarred. The insult on top of injury was too much and helped to drive up veteran suicides insanely high over the next decade. To make matters worse, the war was badly managed and badly ended and our soldiers were neglected, mistreated, and abandoned by their government when they needed help the most. This is a dark mark on our national psyche and has led to many reforms. As the plight of the veteran came to the public's attention in the 80's and 90's there's been a serious 'never again' feeling that we all took in. The horrors of war, their suffering, and the pain of the protestors were brought to us in movies, television shows, and in televised congressional hearings. NOBODY messes with our vets now and there's a lot of political pressure to make sure our people are well taken care of - both in service and after. This is why so many businesses offer military/veteran discounts and so many public figures continue to shout out veterans and help with veteran charities. Many young people don't fully understand the historical story, but our reverence and gratitude is now passed down as a core part of our culture.

The thing about using the Imperial system is that the UK and Canada also still use Imperial units, only just in specific domains, i.e. lengths/distances (inches, feet, yards, miles), weights (pounds, stones) and volumes (pints), and it depends on the context where they are used. I think it would be inconceivable for people in these countries to use kilometers and km per hour to measure long distances and speeds driven in a car, meters to describe human height, or liters to count glasses of beer. In some contexts, usage might be more mixed, e.g. weight of a person (pounds and kilograms seem to coexist). The domain where Imperial is used that is exclusively US American is temperature: we Americans only use Fahrenheit whereas the rest of the world seems to only use Celsius, whether or not we're talking about the weather, a thermometer reading, or the heat setting of an oven.

So she felt the expense was worth the chance at getting her mom treatment. She wasn’t able to find a hospital in time and also lost her mom to cancer as well. She wasn’t a fan of the free healthcare as the wait time was too long for appointments and treatment. She said it is great for minor things just not major health issues.

The thing that people always leave out when they complain about tipping and the sub-minimum wage pay rate for tipped staff in America is that if a tipped worker's tips for the shift, combined with their base pay, don't _at least _*_meet_* the State minimum wage, the employer *MUST* pay them minimum wage for the shift. Good servers, especially with good sets of regular customers, can make way more with tips than with a fixed "livable wage" while keeping food prices turning away potential customers. There's no point in paying servers if your customers can't afford to eat there regularly.

Re: taxes. VAT actually makes a lot more sense, but also you're absolutely right about NOT including it in the sticker price (or at least not showing it as [base]+[VAT]=[total]) is a good thing, because people SHOULD be aware of how the government is extracting value. Tangentially, one of the reasons we always complain about taxes is that we get far less for those taxes than most European countries, as evidenced by our crumbling infrastructure.

You can get some grocery items at pharmacies, but depending on the store, the selections may not be great, and the price will be higher, as you'll be paying for the added convenience. Our local CVS pharmacy has one food aisle, and it's mostly chips, packages of salted nuts, candy, coffee and breakfast cereal, and a tiny refrigerator/freezer that has mostly soft drinks (Coke, Pepsi, etc.), milk, and another one for cold beer. But the actual food selection is very small. Oh I think they have some cans of soup. Basically just emergency food to get a person through one or two meals, until you can get to a regular grocery store or market the next day.

The problem with Switching to a Metric system is that EVERYTHING HAS BEEN BUILT WITH IMPERIAL UNITS. So good luck trying to reference drawings, or making repairs with metric units when your instructions are "30 from this beam, and 20" inches from the floor, you'll find this gas pipe. @@mel2000 It's necessary in military, automotive, and science for precision and international compatibility. Grocery products often use both for the sake of convenience. Some things will do metric over imperial (2 liter bottles of soda, for example), but most will do imperial over metric (20oz bottles of soda, for example). Canned goods are also imperial over metric. And the few goods I've seen with just one measurement always go with imperial. And none of that changes my point. Imperial is too heavily ingrained in the national infrastructure to make switching feasible. It would cost tens of billions of dollars at this point.
