Grew up in the Virginia Blue Ridge Mountains. The bus ride to school took 45mins. Only public transportation so families did have cars to get to work, Church and stores. Still do. Grew up on a farm so there were guns. Locked up safely. We went through gun safety drills. They were there to protect the livestock if needed like when a rattlesnake was about to strike our best milk cow who was our favorite pet. We didn’t hunt but neighbors certainly did to feed their families. We had barn cats to keep the mouse and rat populations under control and out of the feed corn trough. We had dogs of course. Grew our own vegetables and fruit, beef cattle and pigs. Having had generations serving in the military beginning with the Revolutionary War you bet we fly the flag. I’m old now and live in a small city that does not have adequate public transportation so people drive their cars. Duh. Have two cats and foster a senior hospice dog. As far as having a Bible and going to Church Amen! Americans have the right to believe as they choose and generally we celebrate that right. The Bill of Rights protects the freedom to have the Bible , Torah, Pentateuch, Koran , Book of Mormon or any other religious source in our homes. I usually enjoy Lawrence but he has covered this ad nauseam. I bet if he compared rural America to rural Britain he’d find similarities for the same reasons. Enough! BTW I am distressed about the gun violence, especially school shootings. Pray that we will come together and look at prevention.

As a female immigrant (Spanish European - Spain) married to an Irish American man (Colorado), I also own two American flags (and a flag of Spain), one small dog and one cat, a Subaru Outback (my car, we own a total of 5 incl kid's cars), a canoe, a Remington hunting rifle (mine, there is one gun for each member of the family, my daughter never uses hers), I don't have a Hot Dog Cart but that sounds nice, rather I have an herb garden and herb kitchen. My little dog is old and mainly eats chicken and rice and my cat actually hunts the mice in the woods but will eat chicken and rice and carrots as well. I am an American Patriot. I love America and I understand that it is a mind set and not an ethnicity. I feel perfectly safe in America and I understand that the 2nd Amendment calls on the citizens to protect themselves from the government as well. My family has personal experience with Franco's Spain and father wept for joy when he found out that my husband taught me how to shoot. I need a car to get to the grocery store which is either a ten minute drive or an hour walk on a mountain road. In our apt in Spain the grocery store is literally down the stairs on the ground floor of the apt complex.
@tmntman308618 күн бұрын
The car issue varies a lot. I live in a fairly moderate sized city and about half of the people in the complex where I live don't own a car. But outside of the downtown area, they are far more common. The number of guns per person shouldn't be that surprising as the people who own guns tend to have multiple guns. Even if you only look at people who own them just for hunting will often have a rifle for large game (deer), a shotgun for bird hunting (ducks/geese) and possibly a smaller gun for small game. And when you get to gun collectors, even modest collectors can have half a dozen or more.

Edit: Adding that if I were to drive to work right now, it would take 23 minutes as per Google Maps. Something most people don't realize about firearms is that the US has had them since the 1600s. I've handled muskets from the 1700s. Unlike people firearms don't disappear - there are examples from the 1400s in museums. When you consider in the 17 and 1800s every male over the age of 18 had to have their own musket or rifle you can see why there would be so many of them - just because of that.

In America we call a bathroom with at least a shower but could have a tub has a toilet and sink is a full bath. A bathroom with just a sink and toilet is a half bath. Most homes about 1,550 square feet in size will have a full bath only accessible by way of the master bedroom then somewhere among the 2nd level or among to bedroom you will usually find a second full bathroom accessible from the hallway usually on the second floor. Most half bathrooms are found on the 1st floor of a house and was originally designed for guests so that they don’t have to go through the entire house to access a bathroom.
@nolongeramused813516 күн бұрын
Depending on where you live that downstairs toilet & sink will be called a "powder room." Newer homes will often have a "master bathroom" with access only from the master bedroom/suite that has a shower, tub, toilet, and one or more sinks, while the "guest bathroom" will be a "3/4 bath" with toilet, sink, and a tub with a shower. Personally, I think bathtubs are a waste of space as most people never use them. There is often a 4th bathroom (or more) located in the basement (particularly if it's been renovated/finished), and maybe another one in a detached garage/workshop. American like to have easy access to a toilet without having to walk very far, and newer homes are designed with that in mind.

Couple reasons for multiple cars, depending on where you live and your families life style. If both adults work, they both usually have a small to medium sized car or ones that give better gas milage, then.. you have the Truck or SUV or passenger van.. depending on family size or needs.. Some really need a handy hauler (Truck) others need a vehicle to haul the kiddos (or pets) in. Even if only one works, the other wants a car to go do the shopping or social events in while partner is at work. lol... In a lot, perhaps approaching half of all states, you don't even need a license to carry a weapon concealed, though those states and others offer licenses or permits to carry. In theory, every state now has some sort of license scheme, though there are a handful of states that make it very difficult to get the permit - though these states are likely to have their laws overturned in time (as a number of other states have already experienced). Open carry, as Lawrence notes, is far less common. If you look for it, you can see it. But it tends to be both more restricted and even where not restricted, generally uncommon. If you get to small enough towns where everyone knows everyone, it is sometimes more common.
@100percentSNAFU18 күн бұрын
A few states require open carry and don't allow concealment. I believe Arizona is like that. Getting a handgun permit in my home state of New York is a big pain in the butt, especially unrestricted carry. I never bothered to get one but I do have a nice little collection of rifles and a shotgun.

I saw she was drying up so I called the humane society and they picked her up. He never paid the 100 dollars to get her back. I went in after the legal time he had and I adopted her. Yes, a normal couple will have one car apiece. I've noticed others, and also myself - we have one smaller car and one larger car/SUV/truck. The small one has better gas mileage, easier to drive in town. The larger is for anything - carrying your large dog somewhere, DYI lumber, more seating for the whole family and/or baby carseat. Since we can drive at 16, many families will have 3 cars - the parents' and the kid's.

Always remember when it comes to us Americans “anything worth doing, is worth OVER doing!” 💜 Unless you don’t live in the city you most likely need a car to go work! Some of us travel up to an hour away from where we work! I live in rural America. When I got married, husband had a car and a truck, and I had my own car. Then we got another and then another. Had five vehicles for two people. Gave one away, sold one in a yard sale. Now, we are down to three vehicles again. Nice to have an extra when one is in the repair shop.

Minnesota/North Dakota. Often one vehicle per driver sometimes kids share a car. If one driver has two, or more vehicles, the extra vehicle has specific use. Like a work truck and a car for travel. Or maybe a sports car and a daily vehicle. And then you have project cars; where someone is restoring a car, or modifying one.

We also have greater distance to cover. Only the cities have public transportation, even fewer commuter trains. I live in Michigans Upper Peninsula, an area about 200×450 miles with only buses between town and NO PASSENGER TRAINS. We need cars. Some travel nearly 200 round trip to go to work each day. Some just rent a room Monday through Friday, and go home for Saturday and Sunday.

Go Yoopers! I live in SW Michigan where it is also quite rural, most people have at LEAST a car AND a truck. Truck access is a must almost everywhere in Michigan. Also where I live there is zero public transportation. No taxis, no busses, even between towns. There are tiny Amtrak stations dotted here and there, but no commuter trains until you get closer to Chicago. A large number of people commute to the various other towns for work, as well. So yeah, private vehicles are a necessity.

Multiple cars is a necessity for a family here. Even if 1 parent is stay at home, if they need to go shopping or run errands, they need a vehicle. Even if its a $1200 used vehicle, it's better than nothing. As far as outdoor exercise, we have plenty of opportunity for that. But when the temperature ranges from -30 to 105 throughout the year, and snow, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc occur throught the year, having a gym membership helps keep consistency.

Most guns in the U.S. are either kept for home defense or hunting which means most people that hunt own 1-5 guns for the different hunting (muzzle loading, high power, buckshot, turkey shot) seasons which drives the number of conceal carry guns way down considering that 20 people could own 100 of the guns in the 100-125 ratio Laurence mentioned.

The town I grew up even had a public splash pad with water slides and whatnot.

I'm wearing sweatpants right now. Much more comfy than jeans, but I typically don't wear them out and about unless making a quick stop at the store or gas station. But then I don't often go anywhere anyway. I haven't stepped foot in a gym in about 10 years, when I was dating a guy who competed in Strong Man competitions. I get lots of exercise from our little farm. And our little 70+ year old house has one toilet. The average though, is indeed 2. And most families have 2 cars, but that also depends on whether or not you have a teenager in the home with their own car as well. And whether or not a member of the family uses a specific work vehicle. Or just, if you like cars in general. But mostly, 2.

There’s a video of a British couple driving in downtown LA complaining about traffic and I stared at it and kept rewatching those few seconds… no traffic just cars on road everyone was driving speed limit no brake lights were seen. I showed my parents and they cracked up, too. Traffic= slow down due to accident or too many cars on road at same time snarling the flow so lots of cars moving slowly and riding the brake more than the gas pedal. It is completely possible to have a lot of cars on the freeway without it being a traffic jam and just a normal flow of movement. If you hate seeing the existence of other cars on the freeway with you, driving in any city doesn’t make any sense. I’ll concede technically traffic means “vehicles moving on a road” but the only time you should complain about other cars are if they aren’t driving safely or there’s a slowdown. Otherwise just enjoy that the signage and number of lanes allows cars to flow at speed where the humans inside want to go. Which is why we need more cars per household- the people in the home likely don’t work or go to school close enough to carpool and same for other coworkers. I have more than 2 bookshelves full of religious books but that’s just normal in most Jewish homes I’ve been to, and even my Christian (secular and otherwise) tend to have at least one bible somewhere. My non Jewish or Christian friends usually have religious books, too.

It's not so much that there are more people in a smaller space in Europe. It's that your cities were built around ancient cart trails that were laid out centuries before automobiles were ever dreamed of. So you have a lot more much narrower streets. In the US most cities were laid out on broad grids that are a lot more accommodating to larger vehicles.

The most cars I've ever owned at one time was 6, but 2 of those were not working and one was about to be sold. In general, we are a family of 5 and we have 3 cars which are definitely necessary for my commute (sedan), my wife and kids (mini-van) to/from school & events, and also our lifestyle on the farm with a pick-up truck (it also doubles as a spare vehicle if one is in need of maintenance/repairs and also has 4x4 so is useful in the winter snow). Every vehicle driven on the road needs insurance and licensing/registration so I don't want to own anymore vehicles than I want to pay for all of that. When my kids start driving we will probably end up with another car. Oh and we have never owed any money on cars, we just buy used and are very careful/selective of our purchases.

@@wdking8833 Why go the south? I can get BBQ lots of places and not have to put up with baptist bigots. And the bibles were ALWAYS in a drawer, which is something that has also been vanishing from hotel nightstands and desks. Trust me on this, Gideon bibles in every hotel nightstand across the nation has not been the norm for decades. The last time I saw one was in a place that aspired to be a Motel 6, and failed. The decision to accept the free bibles from the Gideons is often left up the manager, and for a lot of the larger hotel chains that option is heavily discouraged or against policy. However, you might ALSO find the book of mormon or scientology pamphlets if there is a bible. Honestly, why people feel the need to proselytize their groupthink to people who just want a room for the night is beyond me. Anyone that really wants/needs their religious text with them at all times already has it in their luggage.

Lawrence "in the State of Montana each resident averages nearly two cars." Andre missed that distinction. He was still thinking Lawrence was talking about the "household". There are families where some of the members of the household will own more than one vehicle. I can think of one 4 person household in my area that collectively outright owns (No vehicle payments) 10 personal non-work related vehicles. They'd be considered lower middle class financially but between "Horse trading" and having handy family members everything runs and is well maintained. As for guns...."Owning" one and carrying one is different. Most folks I know who own them don't actually often carry them around.

I find it humorous that he mentioned the Bible “collecting dust next to that unopened copy of Pride and Prejudice”! For a family of six, we have eight Bibles( not including the two graphic novel versions, children’s bibles, or Bibles set aside to share) and only our reference Bible collects dust. The others are for home study or for reading outside of the house. But we also own Pride and Prejudice which my daughter is trying to hurry and finish so that my son can read it next! I find it quite amusing! Thanks so much for the chuckle! As for the guns, we do own a lot of those here in America. We have different rules depending type of weapon and location as well as a background check of the person. Very sadly though, we do have some gun violence. However, it’s mostly committed by criminals. For instance most instances of multiple people shot in the same event occur in places where firearms are not allowed or are illegal to have there. So the people cannot even defend themselves. And if it was not gun violence it would be some other tool used inappropriately, like knives, vehicles, sports equipment, pointed sticks, rocks, bad people will always find a way to hurt others, so we keep the ability to protect ourselves. Also, even during WW2, one of the Japanese admirals commented on there being a gun behind every blade of grass. We do own three cars and have two dogs! 😅We do not have a gym membership though as our local school allows the community to have unpaid access to the school’s weight and fitness training room during scheduled after school hours. As for sweatpants, only my husband and youngest child wear sweatpants. Our household does have three full bathrooms( includes bath/shower, toilet, and handwashing facility). Thanks for the video! Gyms are very popular here, but once you get a membership it can sometimes be a hurdle to cancel such memberships. Sweatpants are comfortable, and can double as sleepwear. They were invented because of US football (I think), so it's fitting that they are popular here. We often have 2 or more bathrooms in the house. We often have more clothes in our closets as well.

The funny thing, living in Alaska, my husband and I owned 5 vehicles (2 cars for our commute to work which was 1+ hours to Anchorage and all too often 2+ hours back every day, we had a minivan for going to the grocery stores once a month and getting the kids to their sport events and such, a truck for getting firewood and hunting, and we had a Jeep for when the snow was too deep to get where we needed to go in the cars or minivan). We also owned 10 guns of different calibers for our other grocery trips (hunting for ptarmigan and grouse, moose, elk, etc). As far as seeing guns around the US. There are a lot of places where there are very few people who own a gun and there are places (Texas and Alaska) that make up for their lack of guns. Alaska is an open carry state. If you have a gun on you, it is to be out in the open (you are not allowed to hide it if it is on you). Other places have concealed carry but you have to have a permit to do so. And then there are other places where you are not allowed to have it on you. You must keep it in your vehicle or leave it at home. And of course, there are places where you are not allowed to have guns at all.

I'm in Chicago. I have had my own car since I was 16 (and living in Southern Illinois), and there have been only...about 2-4 months since 1986 when I haven't had a car. My partner has always had their own car as well, since they were 16. At present, we have three (working) cars: mine, my partner's, and my older kid's (he is 23 now and has a full time job). My younger son is 22 and barely drives (he can manage to drive 1-3 miles from home and back), so he doesn't have a car of his own and occasionally drives one of our cars somewhere if needed. Here in Chicago, there are 50 outdoor pools and 27 indoor pools operated by the Park District...and the indoor pools are available year round. Also, ALL of these pools have lifeguards provided AND they are FREE in the months of June, July, and August...AND offer free learn-to-swim lessons in those months as well. Our home has only one toilet. Sadly.

It all depends on how much money you make. Husbands and wives usually work in separate businesses. We do need 2 cars because of the distances involved. A good American drive to work is 30 minutes. The usual drive is 1 hour. Two cars are indeed necessary.
