Good explanation of the geography of Belgium! The only fact I want to share is about the region Brussels. Brussels is actually a 2-language region. A lot of People speak French, but you also can find Dutch people in Brussels ;) for example the streetnames in Brussels are always written in French and Dutch. Also there are a lot of flemish and wallon People who commute everyday to Brussels (as am I) to work or study, so it's easier for Brussels to be bilingual. PS. Love your channel and this Belgium vlog! Hope to see you soon in the lovely region of Limburg!

12:10 Ooooh, that's tricky! In Dutch we often say "Bier na wijn, geeft venijn", which could be translated as "Beer after wine means headache, not fine". It's better to start with beer, 'cause "Wijn na bier, geeft plezier" (Wine after beer, will make you cheer)

My brother and I were staying overnight with a friend of his after driving back from a trip to Poland, Slovakia, Hungry and Romania. I only had four beers! Belgian beer is lethal! I hope you both moderated your intake as it is SO easy to get drunk on that stuff!

A beginner's guide to Dutch/Flemish pronunciation - the initial "g" is pronounced like the "ch" in Scottish "loch" - so Groote Markt ["Great Market/Grand Market"] is like "Chroote Markt". The hard initial "g" is sometimes softer in Belgian pronunciation, so it sounds more like "Hroote Markt" than Chroote Markt". Tourist guides in Amsterdam sometimes wind up their guests by suggesting that they try pronouncing: "Amsterdam heeft acht en tachtig prachtige grachten" - "Amsterdam has 88 beautiful canals".....erm...if you don't want to spit after saying that, you're either (a) Dutch/Belgian or (b) not normal. Keep up the good work, you folks! Cheers, Keith (Brit in Berlin)

By sheer coincidence I picked up a lovely sour Flanders red ale from the beer shop earlier so I am enjoying that while watching. And then you guys start talking about a beer market! I'm from the UK but I sure do love my Belgian beer. Way back in the 2000's before the craft beer boom I was introduced to Belgian beers by a local bar that was a favourite hangout spot with my friends. They had a really great Belgian beer menu and it was such a world away from the crappy generic lager that was so popular at the time that it blew my mind.

Brussels is actually officially bilingual French-Dutch, although the majority of inhabitants does speak French. We also have a third official language- German! And as you’ve probably noticed we all speak English as well. We do know our languages haha! If you’re still in Belgium, definitely head over to Leuven (really close to Diest). It’s a university city and the home of the oldest catholic university in the world. There’s also a UNESCO world heritage town hall that will blow your mind and plenty of interesting historical facts. Also lots of good food places. Another good place to visit is Dinant, located in the southern French speaking region. A beautiful town alongside a river with cute and colourful buildings and a citadel on hill. I hope you enjoy your time in my country 🇧🇪

Fun fact, I'm British but most of my relatives either hold dual British and Belgian nationality/citizenship, or are Belgian. The language spoken (other than French) whilst very similar in most respects to Dutch, is Flemish though, even if Dutch and Flemish speakers can communicate 100%. Difficult to think of another such example where the languages are so similar. Having been the site of World War I and II, it's no surprise that many of the towns and villages in Flanders and the surrounding area, were massively damaged during the wars, especially during WWI. So much so, that in some cases the entire square and surrounding buildings were completely levelled. Once the war was over, using photographs and records, some were rebuilt as they had been before the war, so they look much older than they actually are.

SO CLOSE - Belgium has 2 official languages French and FLEMISH ( to be fair it is a Dutch dialect but much more than an accent like we'd have in different regions in the states.) The north is Flanders (Flemish speaking) and the south Wallonia (French speaking) and Brussels being the capital and somewhat central, officially uses both (like most of the country.)
