Well, I still haven't watched the movie yet. 😁 Politics: Yes, the mentioned political/cultural reasons apply. However, please, also remember why Eurovision was created after WW2, to bring the European countries back together in a peaceful & non-political environment. Of course, as time moves on, politics develops like everything else, so it keeps pushing against the wall of the contest's rule. Songs to get rejected to participate if the song is blatantly political. The border between political and historical is thin, so for some people a historical song about how a country's people suffered can be ok if the focus is not on the Soviets who did the crime or the perpetrator isn't named (even though "everyone" knows). Languages: It used to be languages only allowed if *official* to the country. There are countries with more than 1 official language like Luxembourg, Belgium etc. I don't remember when that rule was changed & I did not look it up. I'm just accessing my ADHD memory. 😅 The change might have happened in the 1990s. 🤷♂ Yes, to appeal to more people, English is a good way, but also for the music industry to market e.g. a winning song globally. IIRC, we even had 2 songs with an imaginary language. Final Structure: Semi-Finals are still a rather new concept. More and more participating countries, a longer and longer final show (especially the voting) needed to be dealt with. That's why the 2 semi-finals were introduced. More to rules: Like the language, it used to different for who may write a song for the contest. Now it doesn't matter, but it used to be a *songwriter contest* for each country, writers from the participating country, of course. I don't remember if all writers had to be from the country or if the % was important. The singer, the show, the overall entertainment pushed itself more and more into the foreground. EBU (European Broadcasting Union): Yes, all members of the EBU are allowed to participate. Members are core members & associated members. Core members, there is no question, they are European countries which includes - geographically - Turkey, Russia etc. In the case of Israel, yes, if I recall correctly, they are assumed to be culturally part of Europe, history... There are many associated members like Australia, South Korea, Japan, South Africa, Brazil, the USA etc. In Australia, the Eurovision is hugely popular. It's their morning TV spectacle with huge viewer numbers. It was nice to see them start with the Korean Dami Im in the Eurovision. IMHO still one of the best songs I remember from the entire contest. Shortly before the pandemic, a few other associated members were in talks to participate. I only remember South Korea. The talks obviously didn't go through. Still before the pandemic but after the talk with South Korea, there was talk of starting an Asian Eurovision with several countries showing interest. The pandemic postponed everything. Talks started again "after" the pandemic. However, it never got to anything. Then the US had their one and only season. Tourism: Eurovision may cost a lot to have in a country, but it's very broadly used to highlight the country for tourism. Before it got so expansive, tourism was THE thing to get going.

Ah yes, I knew I forgot something! I wanted to say something concerning what artists want to participate. It's a huge stepping stone to ignite a career, to re-ignite it, or to go beyond one's country's audience, Europe, global. However, many well-known & successful artists do *not* want to be part of it. Participating can make or break a career. A successful artist with e.g. the last place in the contest, you're a laughingstock & a goner, artistic suicide. I'd say go for a huge performance as a guest performer during the break. 😄 After all, it's the biggest music show/contest on the globe. Who was there so far? Only remember Justin Timberlake right now. Madonna? Idk.
