Germany's entry to the 1999 Eurovision Song Contest in Jerusalem, Israel.
Sürpriz - "Reise nach Jerusalem"
Runner-ups in the German national final, Sürpriz got the ticket to Eurovision when the winner was disqualified. Thank goodness for that, for Eurovision 1999 would have been lesser without "Reise nach Jerusalem". It's a fiesta of Eastern ambiance combined with western dance, and the result is beautiful. It's so extraordinarily catchy and loveable that it's a wonder Germany didn't win (though they did come close). If I may be partial, I would rather our Selma had been beaten by this song. In my eyes, it encapsulates the love and togetherness that Eurovision is all about.

At this moment, I was kind of happy and proud for the first time for a German ESC title, because it was such a big step for all, the Germans towards the Turkish people living here, the Middle Eastern conflict and of course, this was a big step to demonstrate that Germany is really no longer a country of hatred, fear and of course, a good friend of all Jewish and Muslim people worldwide. It would have been great if they had won, but it was a great evening anyway and a moment that will be remembered for many, many years! Love from Germany! 🙂

Loved the final line was that in Hebrew? You don't have to have the nationality of the country you represent. Senhit represented San Marino last year, and she's Italian. You don't have to be living in the country you represent. Stefania represented Greece last year, and she lives in the Netherlands. You don't have to sing in the language of the country you represent. A lot of Eurovision songs are in English, and they can be from countries where English isn't the national language. So you absolutely could sing in Portuguese and represent Germany. Boa sorte!
