There's something different about Latvia this year than LPS last year, especially with the leaked last 30 secs on twitter. It looks and feels (and screams) different, quality, and unique and I think it will stand out with the whole performance shown tomorrow. Definitely voting for them tomorrow. We should spend our votes for our borderline favs this semi. We all agree the Nordics and Israel are going in without us anyway.

You should have waited for the Jury show to finish before doing this review, Portugal had one of the best public reactions and has started climbing in the odds. Lots of people that went to the jury show have put it in the top 4 for SF1. The rehearsals are never representative of the actual performance. The press poll put it 6th too.

@@maxkho00 After sleeping on it and returning with a clearer state of mind, Switzerland put on a very good performance. If any of the qualifiers should've missed out, in my view, it's Serbia. Luke Black's vocals were quite subpar, and The Busker should have advanced over him.

I miss when we appreciated a country based on the performer and it’s abilities not about visuals, camera angles and LED’s. Actually I think Moldova will not go through :D It looks too dark and theatrical and the song is sooo repetitive. Instead I would say the Netherlands will be one of the surprise qualifiers :) 1-Finland 2-israel 3-Norway 4-Sweden 5-Serbia 6-Czechia 7-Croatia 8-Portugal 9-Switzerland 10-Netherlands One more information: press poll puts Portugal in 6th place after today's rehearsal while Malta got 12th. So I think this semi will be one of the most competitive we have ever had and there will be some surprises and that's why we love eurovision :D

I get your point, and sadly I think they have it really hard to qualify today, but Latvia's song is quite loved in the fandom (much more than Slovenia ever was last year), so I think even if they don't make it through, they will get more votes than AT LEAST Azerbaijan (and honestly, Ireland too). As always, I'll be waiting for the interval tomorrow night before I make my final decisions. But as it stands, my current qualifiers (in running order) are: 1. Norway (easy) 2. Malta (still on the fence with this) 3. Serbia (easy-ish) 4. Portugal (I may say no this if the sparse staging flops, as I suspect it might) 5. Israel (easy) 6. Moldova (I think it should do it) 7. Sweden (easy) 8. Czechia (like you, I have been worried so much about this whole performance. Pleeeeaaaase be good) 9. Finland (crazy; party!) 10 ... Latvia (at a push), Switzerland (like you, I think this is on the rise), or Croatia in a surprise move. Of the three, I want the crazy old dudes in. And did you SEE them on the turquoise carpet? Amazing outfits. As for Malta having "the edge" over Portugal with the staging - they're absolutely destroying Portugal on the staging. Why they ditched the sofa from the national selection is a mystery. She looks so isolated on the stage with all that red. And people might be thinking, "Oh, it's Portugal sounding Portuguese again. Bit boring ..." I can't commit to my final choices just yet! (Why is somebody always doing DIY when you're recording videos?🙂)

Song and staging won't affect too much, casual viewers vote for friendship and proximity. But I agree that will be the most decent possibility if we want to pick an underdog.

As a Maltese though, I'm not sure i have your optimism about Malta. Unfortunately, it's a "borderline" and when Malta is borderline it doesn't tend to go in its favour. However, I hope you're right as I love The Busker and their infectious optimism. Regarding Portugal, I'd happily trade it with Croatia or Czechia. I might sound outrageous, but since Czechia decided to turn their anti-war/slavic sisterhood song into merely a female empowerment anthem, it's just become a joyless version of Netta's Toy (thematically speaking). I still think Croatia's song has very little musical merits but at least they're bringing in the fun.

Czechia was always predominantly a women empowerment song, though... the entire official music video is about the fight vs the patriarchy. The anti-war messages felt like an afterthought. But I agree with you ─ at least in the music clip, there was a definite pan-Slavic theme, which the live performance was completely devoid of. Not to mention a large part of the appeal of the song were the colourful costumes and props, the captivating choreography, and the church singing-style harmonies. All of that was replaced by extremely bland pink costumes, nonexistent props, a boring and forgettable choreography, and generic singing. All in all, definitely very dissapointing.

The worst part is that not only such entries as Latvia, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Czechia and Portugal are on the edge of qualifying/non-qualifying, but also it seems that various complete shit entries like Ireland, Azerbaijan and Croatia recently have joined the group of potential surprise qualifiers. If it ends up with, for example, Latvia and Switzerland not qualifying and Azerbaijan and Croatia being in the final, it's just awful.

Thanks Rachel. It's interesting to see you put Norway second before Sweden. I think that is more likely to happen on Saturday actually. I would think that the eurofans make up a (much) bigger part of the televoters in the semifinals than in the final. And that should favour Loreen. I also think there will be more booze involved in the televoting on Saturday: and the drinks might favour more instant and up-beat songs. And the party-factor will probably boost Kaarija even further on Saturday! I do think Portugal will qualify though, but that might just be wishful thinking...

I argee on nearly all counts with your analysis, but like others here, I don't see Latvia coming last because at least within the ESC bubble they already have vocal supporters, which LPS didn't have, and their performance has energy (which, respectfully, LPS also didn't have). My only real disagreement here is Croatia. I know Let 3's song is not a "gag entry" but it does look like one, and gag/irony entries aren't the surefire hit many commentators seem to think they are, and neither are "message" songs.

Yes! Thanks Rachel - girl bops are overrated by fandom. That's why I see Switzerland through (I always had it as a qualifier, especially after Madrid), and the girl bops overload could bring solo male vocalists and bands and duets into contention. Latvia, Malta and NL into contention. I entirely agree about Czech Republic - it's dropped down to borderline for me - but I agree about what people are looking for. oooh, Latvia last? Interesting. I dont get one thing, how is switzerland certain qualifier but latvia is not? I know lots of people who adore latvia but i dont see and know any supporters for switzerland. Of course there are people who love that song but i dont see very often. I checked almost every post or video about these two countries, always latvia's supporter much more than Switzerland. So this is televote only part of the esc, i think latvia has a chance at least Switzerland.

Here's my prediction: 1-Sweden (She's had a bad rehearsal but she's always nailing it I trust her, the most impactful staging and catchiest song) 2-Finland (Also very impactful but he's voice is almost covered by the backing vocals so is not that impactful) 3-Israel (That choreo is very powerful she's gonna be remembered at the end) 4-Switzerland (This was the best rehearsal clip from this semi, this is a dark horse, and he's gonna stand out because is one of the only ballads and it is probably the best ballad) 5-Norway (The staging is weak, I need more warm light to enhace the 'empowering' lyrics that the song has, she will Q but not that high) 6-Moldova (Yes it is going to stand out because of the style of folkloric-electro sound that is really liked in Eurovision, they're gonna stand out) 7-Portugal (A bit empty stage but they will Q, traditional elements here are gonna be very voted) 8-Croatia (They're standing out even though the staging is not pretty good) 9-Latvia (That was a very lovely staging, this may connect to the public or not, if it does they're in) 10-Serbia (Very borderline but they're going through because others has flopped) 11-Netherlands (Vocally it is much less impressive, although visually it is beautiful) 12-Czechia (The message of the staging is not understood, they need much faster camera movements, they are very weak vocally, there are too many general shots, I don't think they are going to qualify and it breaks my heart) 13-Azerbaijan (Well they worked really well with the staging, I think they could impress the public and be surprise Q, I can see that) 14-Malta (The problem they have is the running order, and it is not because they are 2nd, it is because the difference in level between Malta, Norway and Serbia is very noticeable, I think they will be eclipsed) 15-Ireland (I feel the same with the outfit, for me it doesn't help the song having a more modern image, they will do a very good performance because his voice is marvellous, but the song is very weak)

I mostly agree with the list and the reasons, but I'm still not quite sure about Moldova. Although I like everything about it, Fulenn last year didn't perform so well and they both gives really similar vibes. Malta is also questionable, since the song is really repetitive and I got really bored the 4th time they sing the chorus again.

You know what, I keep changing my opinion, so I'm going to try to be final this eve, and accept that this semi comes with a certain level of jeopardy. Trying to consider rehearsals, past voting patterns and people's comments, here's my prediction. 1. Finland 2. Sweden 3. Israel (I see where you're coming from, but this is the dancey one that even casual voters like. In any case, I do think she's set to be a dark horse this semi). 4. Norway 5. Serbia 6. Moldova Now... The tough bit. 7. Croatia 8. Switzerland (we're 100% in sync here, it's a good breather after Croatia) 9. Malta (a guy can dream...) 10. Czechia (on the edge) ................................... 11. Portugal 12. Latvia (I'm so sorry 😔) 13. Azerbaijan 14. Netherlands 15. Ireland This whole semi is a gamble, apart from the top 6, anyone between 7-12 can qualify, and even then, 13-15 are potential shockers.
