For Ireland, people really need to be mentioning Sergio Jaen more, the 22 year-old staging director. The strength of the performance isn't the song itself - it's how they told the story onstage. I anticipate Sergio will be booked and busy for the next several decades.

Shout out to Marina Satti as well as a winner, who charted a BUNCH with her new album, even though she faced and still faces a ton of backlash from certain people here in Greece. That didn't stop her from putting out an album that charted globally on Spotify and in Greece 4/6 songs are on places 1-4 in the TOP 5 and her future lives and concerts in the country sold out in minutes. She is an icon and we love her!

Well not from nowhere. Our national presenter mentioned her famous musician parents every time they did an introduction of her. I'm not saying that she's there just because of her parents and not of her own talent, not at all - I liked the song and she is really good, but having two successful musician parents must have at least made a reasonable amount goodwill for her. when looking at the UK vs Ireland, obviously there's a lot to say about the songs themselves and how well the performances were executed but I think there's also a big difference in how the staging was conceptualised in both. Both performances focused heavily on bringing music video-level cinematography but they achieved this in very different ways. The UK created a whole set for Olly to perform in, which, while allowing for some fantastic moments, detached the performance from the arena and the audience. We've seen that approach alienate voters before with Dance You Off, which also received a poultry number of votes. Of course, that performance was executed well enough to get a high jury score, a grace that Olly sadly wasn't gifted. Meanwhile, Ireland's performance was expertly shot and choreographed but it was done so in a way that felt both intimate and like a theatrical stage spectacular. I think those wanting to stage future ESC songs could deffo use these two songs as excellent case studies of what the best approach is. And since I know someone's gonna say it: yes, Sweden's performance this year was also very Dance You Off but they had clearly learned from that song and brought the audience in far earlier so it still felt like a live performance.

For your iceberg you need to talk about the last performer curse. This curse existed last year when the last performer for last year's Eurovision, Mae Muller who represents United Kingdom finished second to last with 24 points. The same story happened with Austria and Kaleen who performed last in this year's Eurovision and finished (you guessed it) second to last with 24 points.

RAJC talks about this on his channel but generally the performer on last tends not to do well. The way he puts it - people have generally made up their mind by the closer and I think fatigue sets in. You tend to get strong acts in the 20s too. The Common Linnets on in slot 24 effectively nerfed the last two countries after them in Copenhagen and I think Italy in the same slot would do the same to San Marino in 21. The exceptions to the rule are both the times Italy closed in 15 and 18 and Armenia with Lovewave in 16. Lauteur to some extent for Moldova to some extent in Baku too but that was a completely randomly drawn running order and it didn't really work.

Kaleen had an interestic nostalgic song, and a powerful staging but she was just not very strong singer live. Her vocal performance was not stellar. I am not surprised audience didnt reward her. Let's have a look at the last performers from the past five contests before 2024 to see if there is a pattern: The last performer in 2018 was Italy, who finished 5th. In 2019 it was Spain, who came 22nd. San Marino also finished 22nd in 2021. Estonia was 13th in 2022. And finally, the UK got second to last place (25th) last year. So, including Austria, four out of six countries got a bad result, one country finished mid table and only one was very successful. So maybe it is not exactly a curse, but definitely a tough spot to perform in. Kind of similar as going first actually.

As for Martin Osterdahl, if his head does roll, it won't be now. It'll be closer to the fall and in a quiet fashion with some likely asinine excuse. The EBU we've seen under his leadership in particular is certainly not willing to just budge and say "we're in the wrong." I assume someone in the graphics team was told to mock up a bunch of possible outcomes and this was one of them. Because realistically, you'd want every option on standby so you aren't scrabbling at the last minute. Much easier to have them and not need them. I think avrotros would be even more furious if they'd been excluded from voting too tbh.

It's not like we Germans don't want to send cool stuff. Even in 2022 we fans signed a petition for Electric Callboy to get a wildcard and we failed. This year there was a huge buzz about Großstadtgeflüster and it turns out they didn't even apply. And now Electric Callboy don't want to come back (which is understandable) and a lot of cool bands will never apply, because our national final is a joke and if you don't win it all, you're losing something, mostly credibility. So in order to take some risks, we should be select internally for a while again, so the artists don't feel like they're set up to failure in the national final.

I think most of the songs were of a higher standard overall this year compared to last (the top five were all absolutely excellent, especially Nemo!), but the whole show was better last year, especially the interval and opening acts. Nemo’s win has sparked a huge conversation about the rights of nonbinary people in Switzerland and I am so happy about that because IT IS ABOUT DAMN TIME. In German there are only three pronouns: sie (she) , er (he) and es (it) which results in nonbinary people constantly being misgendered. Nemo’s win is getting everybody to talk about accepting nonbinary people and introducing a pronoun for them and I hope that they will have better rights in Switzerland very soon.

That's what you do when things aren't going well and you need changes. Thörnfeldt wrote Medina’s two songs in Mello & also the rock band Smash Into Pieces' two entry’s in Mello. If you look at their average of all the songs they've ever created in Eurovision, it's below the top 10. There aren't many producers/songwriters you can find with that stats. Sweden has understood the competition and therefore we do it well. Even though it may be perceived as "boring & same". Similarly, we have understood pop music, which has made us a global power house & most successful when it comes to the category of most streamed genre. Even if it is "boring & same". Personally, I’d never teach Germans how to win championships in football. Considering our own national team is crap (men's) and Germany has won many championships. I’d probably ask what they do so well that we don’t. But maybe it's just us 😅

Hi Gabe, that's a great analysis you're giving and a lot of it is spot on. Thanks so much for you eloquent explanation of things surrounding this turbulent year! I do disagree with two things: firstly the fan media, and bear with me because I think you're all doing a great job in creating content and helping to build the community! But tbh with all the fan media being so close to the story, we still don't exactly know what happened to Joost, nor have I heard that many stories about what really happened behind the scenes from people who experienced it first hand. Most of the information from fan media imho is based on hearsay and rumours; I can hardly say that great investigative journalism has been done in Malmö. Secondly, I don't agree with Joost Klein being the biggest winner. Agree, he hasn't come out of all of this badly, but he has suffered humiliation, and while he has had the experience to perform on the Eurovision stage, he hasn't had the experience of the final, getting a result and be listed on the historical Eurovision rankings. Plus: I think that his following and viewing figures would have been high as well if his DQ hadn't happened. I don't think that he can be called the biggest winner considering what he has been through.

07:00 About Malmö losing out... recommendations actually went out to people working in Malmö to _not_ come into the office that week, and instead telecommute, something Sweden became very good at during the pandemic. Workplaces also relaxed the typical 3+2 rule for that week (which is typically not strictly enforced anyway) and so many commuters just did not come into town. And considering you pay 10 EUR and up for a lunch in Malmö, they took a hit there.
