Anytime that Eurovision intro theme came on, for all of us Europeans growing up in the 60s, 70s and 80s, it was going to be a very special event to celebrate with the family, whether the Eurovision Song Contest, or the UEFA Champions’ Cup (now Champions’ League) final, or the annual New Years concert in Vienna or the royal wedding du jour. Pure nostalgia!

Now that everyone can make a video call to the other side of the planet for free, I wonder if people can still grasp how complex, expensive and... yes, in a way heroic was until not long ago to connect all the broadcasters of Europe so that they could air a single TV event, like a concert or a football match
@brunoxing90603 жыл бұрын
I think in that era, they usually made use of satellite systems, all around the planet. So, you can maybe imagine a big plane space with some satellite dishes. The more "difficult" process it's to mix all the streams, in my opinion. Now, depending on the country you are, to connect to other countries they use a mix of satellite connections and stream through the internet. For example, the Eurovision here at Portugal, you can notice that some interviews made on another countries take more time to respond to the questions than others. Maybe, that happened because from Portugal, they connect to country A using satellite system and to country B using Internet (optical fiber, probably). I'm not an expert, but maybe this is a good explanation.
@G6JPG Жыл бұрын
@@brunoxing9060 I don't think satellite links were much in use in 1957; I think heavy cables - or, in some cases, off-air signals!

It's not only from the Song Contest, but Logo and Hymn from the "Eurovision"- different TV events where different european broadcasting organisations were sharing sound and pictures. e.g. 24h of Le Mans (1955), Urbi et Orbi (frome Rome, the pope) Lots of Stuff for Germany-Swiss-Austria (ARD, SRG ORF) "Jeux Sans Frontières, Games without frontiers, Giochi senza frontiere, Spel zonder grenzen" (RAI, ARD/WDR, ORTF, NCRV, TSI, BBC, RTB, BRT) And many more ...

Yes, I searched for your reaction: I saw a fragment of the skiing in Garmisch-Partenkirchen today (New Year) and remembered this music. Always your own country and national tv-logo first and then the crucial moment of switching to a European country hosting a special event like a championship... and then the logo of that country. There was always a certain minor loss of quality... the signal came from far.

Ah, the tin knight! (Actually a large weight of sterling silver; quite an interesting story to it.) For me, I always expect "Tales of the Unexpected" after it; apparently most people "Sale of the Century". The ITV logos are very nostalgic - most of them just three to ten notes, but instantly recognisable to those of us old enough! (Thames' brass, Southern's guitar, LWT's chimes, …) Some stations had quite long classical pieces - usually over shots of their region - before startup in the morning, too. (All on KZbin, of course!) Other classical pieces probably made an impression on you from TV adverts, though you might not have realised at the time. (Fruit and Nut case, Just one Cornetto …)
