If I had a nickel for every multi-language love song or every imaginary language entry in Eurovision I'd have 3 nickels. It's just weird that each of these happened thrice! Obviously some of the fads that I included in the video extend past the 2000s - both before and after - but I tried to include things that either reached their peak in a way during the 2000s or were last seen properly in that decade. What other trope that I haven't included in this video has defined the 2000s for you?

I think you forgot to mention that since 2004, they will have a slogan for that year's contest. Every year people are exciting to know what the theme art and slogan that year would be, though some of it are pretty lame and boring but there're some that actually creative and fun.

Another trend I noticed : a shift thanks to language rule abolition from typical national language verses and catchy anglophone word repeated in the chorus to english verses and catchy national language or traditional instrument in the chorus, as mastered in the 2000s by Greece

Amazing video! I would've also added the 'Balkan ballad' trope: a native language ballad including traditional instruments (written by Zeljko Joksimovic most of the time) which starts out slow and reaches its climax at the end. It's also present in the 2010s but was really successful in the 2000s. Lane Moje, Zauvijek Moja, Lejla, Molitva, Oro, Bistra Voda, Nije Ljubav Stvar, Verjamem, Moj Svijet, Adio, Ljubav Je, Nova Deca, Kruna... There's so many of them and honestly, they're one of my favourite genres in Eurovision!

Great and interesting video 😊 Another fad I thought of is "the-boy/girl-and-their-guitar-song" those love songs performed by artists with guitar in their hands like: UK 2004 Netherlands 2004 Lithuania 2007 Andorra 2009 Belgium 2010 Finland 2012 Hungary 2013 Nowadays we don't see that many combinations of sweet love song + guitar

Thanks a lot for this video! It was really interesting and, actually, all these statements are true! I have to say, I kinda miss 00s Eurovision. I find it more light-hearted, all these peace songs, love duets. Almost entry every was created with soul. Yes, maybe the quality wasn't as high as now, but still, countries weren't afraid to take risks (even if it often ended badly). I agree that now the overall quality of entries is higher and there's nothing wrong with it, because time passes and events like Eurovision need to keep up with it, but still, I'm really happy when countries come with something innocent and cheesy, like in 00s.

Great video! I guess Denmark's "Love is forever" from 2019 would be the most recent example of love in many languages? As someone who didn't really get into the contest until the 2010s, this was a great recap of the decade I missed!

This is a really interesting trip down memory lane! I would never have admitted to being a fan of Eurovision in the 2000s. I felt it was embarrassing to even admit you were a fan of the contest back then especially being from the UK. I definitely miss the more ethnic songs sung in native languages, eg. Lane Moje/Bistra Voda/Oro which we don't seem to get anymore, maybe they're seen as too cheesy and dated 🙄. I am glad to see a reduction of troll entries that serve no purpose in the contest but we now have more jokey adjacent songs that embrace the contest rather than mocking it, e.g. Konstrakta/Käärijä/Teya and Salena (sp?) and these have enhanced the contest. Bringing the juries back to the contest was the best thing to happen to the contest but maybe it wasn't set up in the best way. A bigger jury of younger music professionals with clear set guidelines to follow would be great. By increasing the quality and giving artists the slim possibility of having a career off the back of the contest has maybe caused artists to take fewer risks. I just want a contest that is diverse in language and sound with well written songs performed and sung well. The 2000s were dark days for the contest but there were some diamonds in the rough that should be reintroduced into the modern contest to keep things interesting as I also think the mid 2010s went a bit too far in the other direction. I hope the contest in the 2020s keeps the generally high levels of quality that have been coming through in the 2010s without it becoming a Eurovision X Factor contest or dare I say it the American Song Contest. I can't wait to see how Eurovision in the 2020s turns out😊

One trend that wasn't in this video is writing a whole song in your native language, and then having one English chorus at the end. If songs mix English or another language, it's usually limited to a few words, or a consistent English chorus.

There's something very similar about the winners from 2002-2005. Energetic female singer who gets involved with the choreography? Not sure but when you watch them back to back you can see a bit of a formula for Eurovision winners taking shape, which Lordi then turned on its head.

It's not just that, the years before and the years after, all the songs were different. A lot of them were pop songs more or less, but they have different qualities about them. Like 2008 - 2013 were all pop songs of some form, but all of them were completely different from each other.

My favourite backing vocalists dances are Sweden 2006 and 2008. Those were both crazy (especially with Carola). Sacha Jean Baptiste really revolutionized the staging game when she hid Loreen backing vocals back in 2012. That honestly is one of the most interesting "trends" I notice with Eurovision nowadays.

Am i the only one thinking that all the singing should be live at the esc? They allowed taped chorus 2021, saying like that, less people would need to come together during covid. Then they just keept it. It was possible before to achieve a good placing even if one could barely sing (looking at you Eric Saade, but also loving that entry and watching it still today). Now, every second entry, once the hook starts, its a whole choire singing(looking at you Greece2022, not watching it just because of this feeling wrong and i cant think of anything other) Was just about ok to hide the backing vocals backstage, but havingvhundred of voices played is wrong. This is coming from someone loving everything about the esc.

Hang on a minute! Flying our Flag isn't a joke song! It had a deep and complex sexual meaning! And Ireland's song was singing about how Ireland has failed and how the contest is about 'block vote, shock vote', which was very much a thing in the 00s with the televoters going for nations that were near or allies with them!
@LeafHuntress
@LeafHuntress Жыл бұрын
The North-West European Archipelago needs to shut up about all that, stop whinging & send good songs. There is no conspiracy! Every time the UK sent in a half decent song they've got a lot of votes. Ireland needs to send Seo Linn. I suspect RTE doesn't want to host & therefore keeps sending generic stuff. And BTW, so what if i vote for my neighbour country; because they sing in the same language or the singer/band is already known to me or the ESC song is played on the radio or i'm familiar with the the culture/type of instrument/music. Those are all legitimate reasons to like an entry. The UK has an advantage in this, because UK performers are known in continental Europe. Remember, you need to be good enough to entice others to pick up a phone & spend money on your entry. Take this year; i will not vote for the UK. Yeah, another "banger". Boooooooring. And if Mae is as bad at performing as she was in Barcelona, it will be another nill points.
@pn2360
@pn2360 Жыл бұрын
@@LeafHuntress You're right that block voting never has an effect on the actual results nearer to the top, but it's still nonetheless annoying. And sure, sending a good song will get you points, fair enough no shit sherlock, but it's also the attitude on stage which changes things, especially for the televote. I'm British, and I'll be the first to admit that 90% of our entries in this millennium have been useless, and when we get it right we get rewarded (2009, last year), but I'll always be incensed over 2017 - brilliant song, brilliant voice, and yet we come 15th and only 20th with the public. All I'm saying is that sometimes just sending a good song doesn't necessarily work - you need to have the credentials on stage to make people pick up the phone and vote, like you said.

I can't say the 2000's were my fav area 😅 a 100% televote system didn't work. It was also the time where my family members stopped watching eurovision and turned their back on it (until i was old enough to watch, of course). It took me a while to get them into eurovision again. I'm happy that in the 2010's the quality came back more, mixed with like you said, some crazyness that belongs to eurovision. Because in the 00's it was too much 😅 but even then, the crazist and wackiest entries didn't make it to the final, not even with televote.

But when I started watching 2009 I made my parents appreciate it again, and now they actually enjoy it, probably also because of my enthusiasm :p It was a special decade, that's for sure, and let's not forget there were some quality entries as well! But now feel like countries show off their culture more, which I like and the 50/50 is perfect to me. Also artists take Eurovision more 'seriously' and they really want to be there and represent their country. I don't think Ukraine should have taken part in the first place, given that them winning was inevitable, but people didn't vote for them because of politics, they voted for them because a) they had a very public-friendly song and b) the sympathy vote, which for me isn't politics given that their country could be on the verge of destruction.
