It was probably the best song ever. I say this as someone who worked their ass off in conservatory, studying both jazz and classical, both improvisation and Schenkerian analysis, both tone rows and carnatic shruties. I lack the folk music cred though. I'd prefer a stronger instrumental part and more distinct guitars. But alas, this is Eurovision, the most unhealthy type of musical fast food. No surprise to me this song did horrible with both the jury and the televoting.

This was probably the last time you hear Norwegian in Eurovision. When an acclaimed band like Gåte gets ridiculed like this, we wont send quality anymore, and known artists will stay away from the competition also unfortunately. Its clear the juries doesnt follow the criteria they should vote for. The juries hates everything we send and Norway is one of the most diverse countries in Eurovision. We have sent every genre the last 10-15 years. Its a joke. They reward other countries sending songs in their own language, like Ukraine, France, Italy, Armenia, Slovenia, Portugal, Spain.….but Norwegian isnt exotic enough. I remember we sent a beautiful song in Norwegian in 2006 «Alvedansen» which only came 14th. That was the last time we sent a Norwegian song…

​@@theomika​ ​By the vague sound I can hear, it either sounds like "underlige" /"underlig", which means "strange" or "weird", which is kind of fitting as the words sung just before that are "Then she turned me into a sword and a needle". Another possibility is "under lia" which means "under the grassy hillside", which could also somewhat make sense if the stepmother (whom is turning her) is a witch and wants to hide it. The next line he sings is "og sola den skinner så mye", which directly means "and the sun shines so much", essentially saying there's a lot of sunshine. This comes just after Gundhilde's "Og sendte meg av til Kongens går" which means "and sent me away to the king's yard". As for bands similar to this one, try Wardruga and Kalandra. I'd also recommend listening to more of Gåte, especially their new album. Thanks for liking them :)

This comes off way noisier and muffled than it should, and for first time listeners I can imagine it makes it harder to appreciate what's actually going on. I completely agree with you as this is my favourite song in the contest, but I think what happened was a combination of two things: - Norway had to compete with Ireland, because a lot of people seemed to think those two were similar in some way. I don't understand why, but that's what they thought. Ireland's song was also very good imo, so this already is a big obstacle. - The voting system doesn't really accomodate acts that a lot of people "like" but don't "love". If it's not in the top, it gets no points and I think for a lot of people Norway was just outside of that voting range. I still don't get why. The layered vocals near the end are incredible.

I feel like this was easily the best song in the whole of Eurovision. It was composed really well and it sounded so epic and had a real theme going on unlike other songs in the eurovision.

To be fair the top two songs were Operatic Pop (kinda pop, but very rare subgenre Switzerland) and a mix of Techno and Metal (Croatia). France got so high because of how well known the singer is. Ireland was basically death metal.

The programme lasts one hour and is titled "Gåte i herresalen". You find the concert in NRK's net-archive (not on YT, though) and you should also be able to watch it in Ireland. I had no problems to watch it here in Germany.
