At my wife's job they have a parking structure for which they pay a monthly fee. We had to use the superchargers in Jackson Hole, Wyoming and it was obvious that a lot the locals of Jackson are giant a-holes. The first time we charged there, three of the eight chargers were being ICED by the townsfolk. The second time we pulled in, seven of eight were blocked by everything but a Tesla. People were parking in those spots and walking a considerable distance to get to the stores entrance, when there was plenty of closer parking spots available. When one ICE car would leave, another would take their spot. It was the craziest thing at a supercharger I’ve ever seen. And the hateful scowls we got sitting there minding our own business while charging. I know it’s a pretty cool town, but many of the locals either hate the tourists and or hate EV’s too. In my experience the worst offenders are EV drivers. they use the convenient spot to park and also probably because the bays themselves are wider and less likely to result in door dings? On at least two occasions I saw a Taycan parked and not plugged in - in a Tesla Bay that they could not use anyway (not open to other non-Tesla vehicles). Just this weekend I saw an old Audi A7 park in an EV power supercharging bay and there were plenty of other spaces. I also see scrotes parking in Disabled bays and then walk off with no permit on display. Worst I ever saw was a VW Golf GTD stop and park across a Zebra pedestrian crossing and wander off. Car drivers can be selfish, I guess.

In my village in Scotland they put in two 50kw/h chargers about three years ago in the middle of the village car park that had about 15 places which were heavily used. In those three years I have seen one car charging in just one of the charging places the rest of the time they are empty.

Charge $50/hour for the parking spot and make the charging free. People will choose the free spot next to the charging bay if they don’t actually need the charger.
@peteinwisconsin2496
@peteinwisconsin2496 29 күн бұрын
I like your idea though maybe not quite to $50/ hour. Agreed though that whatever charging costs, that is what the parking space should cost and charging should be free. The ICE-ers will then run up quite a bill AND law enforcement will jump at the chance to issue parking tickets for those who have not paid the $$ per hour on these expensive meters.

Does anyone know what the fine is here in Victoria ? I have seen many times, EV's that have been left overnight, finished charging (to 100% I assume), and are blocking use by anyone else. Like 2 days ago, this very thing happened to me. Both chargers were idle, plugged in, and I had to wait an hour before someone came to pick up their car. I spoke to the owner, who had only been an EV owner for 2 months, and she seemed to think this was acceptable behaviour.

This might not happen in the majority of places in the USA. Chargers in private properties are up to the owner to tow the car away. Why would owners of properties tow when the ice vehicle owners are spending money in the stores or staying in the establishment? It is a felony to vandalize cars if the fix is over a certain limit. It is best to install destination chargers in these types of establishments and save the supercharging next to freeways. Santana Row in San Jose, California is what should be done.

The best place for charging stations is away from the business who owns the space. Issues have arisen when a place like a hotel allows chargers very close to the hotel entrance. That is just asking to be ICEd out. In my state, the fine for parking an ICE car in an EV charging space is zero. The business could post signs stating EVs only or towing may occur and then they could enforce this. But why would a business do this since 95% or more of the vehicles in their parking lot are ICE.

Funny you mention this because we were supercharging in a petrol station in Scotland recently and we saw a collection of Porsches (GT3s etc) and other exotic cars like Ferraris turn up, about a dozen of them, they proceeded to park at the gas pumps, wander into the shop and then have a discussion about the gear ratios of their fly zippers or something - while a large queue of hapless drivers built up unable to fuel. They let the air out of the tires, now that ICE vehicle is stuck there till they can get someone there to air up the tires, therfore making the vehicle block the charger longer. Ya that was a great idea. The thoughts of a EV driver never cease to amaze me. I can tell you if that was me I would leave my vehicle there with all for flats for at least 24 hours as I sit in the vehicle, then claim someone is on the way to help every time someone asked me to move. You can't force someone to move a vehicle out of a parking spot that has an emvergency. 4 flats is classified as a vehicle emergency.

I have another problem - plug in Hybrids. Many countries have 2xCCS + Type 2 22kW combo marked EV Only. And usually 7-11kW charger for customers nearby. And a guy with a Hybrid that charges on fast charger at 3.3kW max charging and has 10kWh battery taking 1 charging spot. In time it takes him to fully charge, you could DC fast charge 3 cars. I drive Renault Zoe which does not have DC fast charge, but it can do 43kW AC. And I have to explain every time that 'slow charger' he is using is 'fast charger' for me and ask him to move.
