The EV RE-20 is one of the most underrated professional microphones used in the recording industry for years an produced many hit songs. Stevie Wonder, Bonnie Raitt, Paul McCartney, Peter Cetera, Jackson Browne, Marshal Crenshaw, John Forgerty and Radiohead are just a few professionals utilizing the RE-20 in the studio. There is.an excellent video of Chicago's Peter Cetera singing "Feeling Stronger.Everday" in the studio which was.produced by.Phil Ramone from Nederland, CO which was a Top 40 hit. Elton John also recorded at this studio. It did take me some time to uncover the names mentioned, but well worth it for EV RE20 fans like myself. Great vocal performance. It just goes to show you that.a lot of professionals like dynamic microphones like the RE20, Sennheiser MD421/MD441, and Shure SM7B. These just happen to be the world leaders in Broadcasting in the World. Thanks for posting...

@Melvin77275 жыл бұрын
I'll be completely honest. I have watched a LOT of reviews and demos and lessons featuring various gear. I have never, ever, not even once enjoyed the homemade songs from the unknown artists featured in them (I'm quite unforgiving). This changed with this video. This is a legit good song and a masterpiece that could definitely be a famous hit. Well done sir. Continuing with the honesty though, I thought that the vocal sound of the RE-20 here wasn't as good as the RE-20 typically sounds. Almost as if it had too much mud or boxiness, or like "untreated room" sound or something. Never the less, great work with the song. Chilling writing and vocals.
@sevchyk5 жыл бұрын
Kyle, since you probably have some knowledge about mics, I'd like to ask you one thing. I'd like to make recordings in an untreated room. Condenser mics provide a lot of quality but catch the reverb from the room. Dynamic mics sound somewhat thin compared to condensers but reject the room reverb nicely. I want to find an excellent balance between the sound richness and rejection capabilities. People always mention two mics to achieve this: SM7B and EV RE20. I'm currently inclined towards EV RE20 as it seems that this mic sounds richer. What would you advise me to achieve that nice balance that I mentioned above?
@RealMacoy4 жыл бұрын
@@sevchyk I agree, after hearing the sound quality i changed my mind from SM7b to EV RE20..but i think the cloud lifter is also the reason for the sound quality.

@sevchyk hey, cloudlifter also boosts base level noise, just so ya know! I've thought about it until tonight. I have an re20 and it gets to gainy. :( I need to experiment more and maybe record with it less hot and boost volume by compression the way he does.

The EV RE20 has flown underneath the radar for years as an absolute #1 choice for hit vocal recording. Peter Cetera of Chicago used this microphone on Feeling Stronger Every Day. Others that have used the RE-20 for vocals include Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, Thom Yorke, Producer Don Was, Marshal Crenshaw, Scritti Politti, and countless others. RE-20 is also an excellent choice for recording bass drum, toms, floor tom, horns, and guitar cabinets. I own plenty of microphones, condensers, ribbons, tube, dynamics, fet's and the RE-20 holds it's own against many of these. It has been a real workhorse in my work for many years. Like the Sennheiser 421 and 441 and Shure SM7B, RE-20 is a best-kept secret around the world for vocal production. These radio broadcast mics are excellent on vocals. Their is a reason why Michael Jackson used the Shure SM7B for vocals on Thriller. And the Sennheiser 421 and 441 have been used by countless vocalists like Stevie Nicks, Linda Ronstadt and the Who to name a few. Very good video, Thanks...

John Flynn thanks a lot!
@rubydreams63454 жыл бұрын
You bet! It does sound very warm even in the highs, allows you get a bit haunting which works brilliantly on this song and that’s what I look for. The proximity is awesome and doesn’t get bassy or distort when right up on it, something that also matters a lot to me cuz I do that a lot. The cloud lifter boosts it around 25db, this is a great example showing that’s all you need, but have you found it lacking in any way? I have an SM7B and have been deciding to get a cloud lifter and after hearing this demo, I love the sound you’re getting with this mic so considering getting both! But it’s another $500+. Have you compared the RE 20 to the SM7B and have you tried an Aston Stealth that doesn’t require a cloud lifter? Really appreciate your feed back as I try to make the right decision. Also an fan since hearing this demo!
@jeffpnelson4 жыл бұрын
Hey John Flynn, I have not tried it with the sm7b yet but I just got one and I’m hoping to test it out this year. Thanks for the kind words! You really can go wrong with either mic, they are so widely used and raved about. I keep tinkering with the notion of hosting a podcast as an audio engineer because of these mics in my locker. They are so versatile
@rubydreams63454 жыл бұрын
Jeffrey Philip Nelson oh great, I look forward to your demo of the SM7B. I’ve done a podcast and a tv show on the side from making movies. I’d watch your audio engineer pod cast. I’ve been looking at an Aston Stealth as well. That seems to be a big contender in the last couple of years that doesn’t need a cloud lifter and has several mics in one. I’ve been knee deep in guitar string demos and haven’t found one I want.
@rubydreams63454 жыл бұрын

***** Hey Jeff - not to keep you away from your music creation here, but wondering if you ever tried the SM7B? Seems like a very comparable mic and I love the sound Thom Yorke and Robin Pecknold get from it. I've heard it has less proximity effect than the RE20 and I'm trying to determine if that's an advtantage or disadvantage for my fairly soft voice that benefits from a bit of low end. Did you make your recent record with the RE20?
@jeffpnelson9 жыл бұрын

Thanks, Jeffrey! I had a suspicion this would be a good mic for my voice, but your video convinced me to buy. Just quick A/B tested it yesterday with my LDC (a Joly-modded Oktava MK-219) and really happy with it. Rather than through my channel strip into my DAW, I recorded with a FetHead into a Zoom 5, then dropped the tracks into my DAW. Unmodified, definitely bass-heavy compared to the more airy-LDC, but once EQed, wow. I just happened to download the Code Red Free plugin the other day, and a light treble and mid boost and bass roll-off cleaned it right up. More low mids than the LDC, a nice rich tone for my baritone. It seems to feel solid and up front compared to the LDC. I think that might have to do with the poor acoustic environment in my apartment. The LDC is more "airy" and more sensitive to the background sounds/reflections. The RE20 rejects more of that ambient garbage, giving it that solidity- a huge benefit given the lack of a treated space. I can't wait to try the mic through a proper preamp. I recommend giving Code Red Free (free plugin) a shot, great fit with this mic. I boosted the treble and mid each +1, and cut the bass -1 with the default POP setting and no bass boost.

Nice tone with the re20. I like those too. Definitely a good mic to have for singing and voice over and instrument miking. If you have the budget, I highly recommend an RCA 44bx (restored by Stephen Sank) or else an AEA 44. They are beautiful mics that EXCELL at the warmth and smoothness you are after. Plus you already have a cloudlifter (which is butter for any dynamic or ribbon mic). You will freak out if you get any of these RCA mics. 44bx, Varacoustic, sk-46 (these are a secret weapon) No videos on sk-46 but it was the replacement for the 44, they also have a huge ribbon like the 44. no other ribbon mics have such fat ribbons. Totally look into a rca44bx an AEA44 (faithfil reproduction-handmade) or an RCA sk-46. Your model of the world around you will be shattered. Nice song and vid.
