One thing I noticed when operating an EV is that the trip becomes all about the EV and charge management. To me, this shows how we're in the infancy of the whole electric vehicle revolution. We'll know we've "arrived" at our EV future, when you go somewhere and you don't think about charging at all. I think this will happen when energy density doubles (or at least 50% more) - and chargers are a common as gas stations.

Been good but 3 weeks ago main battery failed and waiting for replacement, no one knows when it will come in. You're preaching to the choir, and so important to keep focusing on. It drives me nuts with all these American based ev channels like Out of Spec, TFLEV, state of Charge and others, who do these 70mph range tests and then say the vehicles don't stand up to 'real-world' EPA range. This is something I've been preaching on the channel and have actually said in every province so far. The slower you go, the more range you get. It feels so counter intuitive for so many ICE folk, but it makes tons of sense. In every one of my 'challenging periods' I was averaging 10~20km below posted speed. Sorry to hear about your 4WT! So you turned cabin climate off and you ended up with more range, which you certainly should have. How did having a heat pump option help this? I would love see a comparison of the heat pump to the non-heat pump equipped lightning. Great work and your are having fun in CA. If you are coming to the maritimes, I may make a trip to meet you (from US and Maine).
@truckedupevs3 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment! It's not as simple as that. Let's take a winter day. A resistance-heater Lightning owner turns the heater off, bundles up and puts on extra long johns - and still loses range. The fact is: It's still cold outside; there is no method to input thermal management in a manner that can offset this effect. Then, after a few dozen miles and no longer being able to feel their privates, said Lightning owner turns on the heat. Now they are drawing electricity through a glorified baseboard heater, which further beats the crap out of the range. In comes the Vapour Injected Heat Pump, a marvel in engineering over at Ford (possible Skunkworks project?). It's not creating the heat. It gets it for 'free'. Sure, like a home heat pump, it has to use some energy in the process of distribution & must follow the laws of physics, but it is incredibly more efficient. However, unlike your home heat pump, it is not as dependent on the variance in temperature from indoor-outdoor. Instead, it's using the thermal generation from the truck itself. So, firstly, when turning on the heat in the cabin in a heat pump setting, it's not burning all those electrons for a resistance element. That's Win #1. Win #2 is when you close that heat loss to the cabin - you ADD it to keeping the batteries at optimal temperature in the cold. In the end, unlike the resistance model, you are increasing, not simply offsetting a decrease, in range. I'm just an old fart, ev truck-owning dumb-ass, so please stand by for the real engineers to roast me alive, but I think I have the premise as to why it worked so well for me on the road, and that's my take on the tech and what I've gleaned from it. I hope this helps.

I'm debating on buying some 18" wheels from a different Ford pickup to put some winter tires on. I'm thinking the 18" wheels should also help in the winter for range due to the lower weight in addition to increasing traction due to larger side walls on the tire. My dad and I used to go up to Amisk Lake. It's in Saskatchewan but we'd drive up through Manitoba, La Pas and Flin Flon, to get there. It's beautiful countryside. I'd love to take my family up there, but I'm a bit leery due to both our vehicles being EVs. (Lightning Flash and an EV9.)

I have a friend in the Kootenays who takes his Lightning into some pretty dicey places all the time (the Upper Incomappleux Valley where he does research). He shredded his stock tires twice, and then jumped up to a ten ply Nitto heavy-duty truck tire on 18's and has never looked back. Better wear, excellent winter traction, tough as nails, and not a huge drop in range. I know this sounds crazy, and everyone makes fun of this concept, but give it some thought: Turn your ev into a series hybrid temporarily for deep backwoods/extended range journeys with no infrastructure. Pick up a tri-fuel generator that powers at 4~5k watts, can run on propane, gas or natural gas. Take you bbq tank and a Gerry with $20 and you're golden. It's exactly what Ramcharger is doing and all long range hybrid concepts in the works, but Ford has yet to install an auxiliary input port. That means charging like you're at a Level 2 for a few hours. However, a generator not having to do any load-related work (cam, crank, alternator, drive, tranny, diffs, etc), it all goes into electrons. I haven't run the math fully yet, but I'm thinking you'll be able to extract far more range out of the fuel than an ICE engine could, even with heat loss. I'll be doing some tests once I'm back but I think one could add 1~2 hundred kms by running the genny at the campsite/fishing hole and dramatically extend range in tight spots. If anything, it's piece of mind to do the wild stuff! Thanks for such an excellent question Kory! Expect more content on this in the future!

So if you had run your whole trip still running your heat pump but with the on board external power off, how much do you think your range would have been increased?
@truckedupevs3 ай бұрын
Oh, that's a tough one. That would take some serious math and I'm not that smart. I don't think it's huge. In fact, I'm certain it's very small. But when I'm trying to retain every electron, I could see it made a difference. This is a pure guess, but after doing this multiple times, I would say a 1km or 0.6 miles per charge cycle? It's minuscule, but when push comes to shove that could be the difference between making it to the charger or leaning into the bumper of a dead truck to get it to roll :-). Driving a 3 ton block through the air at speed takes a crap pile of electrons. Running a circuit that at best is drawing a trickle is a drop in the bucket. The biggest change was certainly the heat pump.

In Saskatchewan and Manitoba, until my little heat pump trick, i was barely able to squeeze out 390km from 100% to limping in the the charger. Through most of Ontario & Quebec, I'm hitting around 430-450km from 100%. Kep in mind almost all of this is primary and secondary highway. @@peiguy1982 There's no resistance heater, but extreme temps are fine. The Vapour Injected heat Pump doesn't operate in the same manner as a home heat pump in that the management of heat variance is coming as much from an internal source (batteries) as it is from the outside temps. Thsi is why Teslas still keep good heat even here in Canada in the middle of winter. Ford's new design is a real marvel according to engineers who have looked into it,. I somewhat disagree about hotel charging not being part of the critical infrastructure. If I have to stay overnight anyway, I'd rather top up while I sleep vs heading to a fast charger and waiting 20-40 minutes. We definitely need both highway high power DCFC and 240V AC charging to make this work a lot more seamlessly. But IMO more AC and 25-50KW DC in every parking lot is almost more important at this point and time, at least in the US. If every hotel, restaurant/store/mall, hospital, etc. has cheaper to install AC or sub-50kW charging I would feel so much better road tripping around the country. Even on the tesla network I've run into issues. I mean, it would be cool if nearly every town had 20+ high power DCFC stalls that you could park at overnight and not tick everyone off, but that's expensive.

But to truly go head to head with ICE, this is about having a network for driving from one place to another without sitting for hours. Yes, plugging in when at work, at the gym, at the university are all important, and at the hotel when vacationing, but that isn't the normal use case. Everyone is in a rush, and won't even get out of their car & walk 30 feet to buy a Frappaccino. Level 2s are woefully inadequate in competing with conventional methods. I never said any hotel, mall hospital, etc should have anything other than a Level 2. DCFCs would be stupid, expensive and a waste for that application, but that's not addressing the biggest range challenge at all. Meeting deadlines, delivering goods, or having Trucked Up Coffee Stops that are delayed hours because of inadequate fast chargers en route (or none at all) is unacceptable in moving the needle forward. I stand by my rating, especially when other provinces are doing it brilliantly.

Just keep your charge limit set to 100% on road trips. Theres almost never a reason not to just leave it there. If you come back to vehicle and disconnect at 80-90% for battery health. Fine. If you run late and it continues to charge past 90% great. ABC. Always be charging.
@truckedupevs3 ай бұрын
Actually, there's a lot of reasons to not leave it at 100% in regular use. I am often at different locations overnight when not doing crazy things like this trip, and I never want to charge to 100% for battery health. When at home, of course, that can be separate, but as is often the case, I don't want to be going outside in the middle of winter at 3am to unplug a level 2. That's the whole reason for having it. However, you are right. For trips that are over a period of time and range matters, just leaving it at 100% makes sense and is smart... that obviously didn't stop me :-) Lesson learned.

@@truckedupevs at the end of the day do what makes you happy however for the sake of your mental health do not drive yourself crazy worrying about battery degradation from 100% SOC in cold weather as degradation in the cold is significantly reduced with 100% storage even up to 100 days. It barely increases degradation over the battery being at 80% stored at 20°C Battery degradation from 100% soc becomes a significant problem after the battery is stored at higher temperatures not in your cold canadian winters. Look up in Google the article “Derating Guidelines for Lithium-Ion Batteries” or refer to the youtube video EV Battery Health with Dr Jeff Dahn Dalhousie U time marker 45:28 that battery degradatiom reactions in the cold are virtually nil. At the end battery degradation is a chemical reaction. It needs heat to drive it.

Basically what I’m saying is don’t worry about 100% battery storage degradation in cold temperatures as it is a chemical reaction does not occur in the cold. The next time some @rsehat says "well it wasn't free, the taxpayers paid for it". Ask them when they are going to put up the toll booths on their local roads? You know, so the "tax payers" wouldn't have to pay for all those "free rides on their roads"... LOL That should shut them up. I don't care if it is paid or free, if the infrastructure is there people will come. That good will however does make an impact. And you told more people to come up and see those good folks. Cool trip. Serious pucker factor running on fumes like that! Been wanting to see the testing data on the new heat pump. Ford just announced they are putting the heat pump in the Mach-e for 2025. That potentially is a big deal.

Same with tax subsidies on oil/gas. If they argue that we need subsidies there, the return on investment on electrical infrastructure has a better payback. However I feel like once something is well established, we shouldn't be piling on these huge subsidies anyway. We shove billions to almost a trillion indirectly every year into big oil and its effects, all for a one time use product. We still need some subsidy of course to ensure critical transportation stays healthy, but that's a lot of taxes that could go back in our pockets or just move a fraction of that to smart electrical and charging infrastructure and we'd be set. That benefits everyone and would probably lead to cheaper electrical rates. I mean US taxes are insanely more complicated than that of course, but that's the general idea.
@Longsnowsm3 ай бұрын
@@andrewt9204 This subsidies game is a bad idea. People will freak out if they had to pay the actual price for that oil and gas without those subsidies. Gradually phase out the subsidies so people can adjust to the price shock and I think electricity is going to look a lot more attractive. For independent minded souls who want to produce their own electricity that is an option too. Can't really say that about oil and gas! LOL Maybe cook up some of your own alcohol for running vehicles might be a thing!

@@Longsnowsm because of my close proximity to my neighbor and their trees I can't use any meaningful solar. I have a couple 100 watt panels just for keeping a couple 12v lithium batteries topped up to charge my portable power stations and power a big inverter if I need to. My next house will definitely have provisions for having enough solar to charge my car.

Are you being paid by Ford to drive across the country? What is your real job or sponsor?
@truckedupevs2 ай бұрын
I wish. I have no current sponsor - although I'm working with a couple of parties that might be interested. KZbin requires any sponsored video to be disclosed or it gets demonetized or pulled. I sold my biz last year and currently hope to get this channel to a break-even point. As has been clear in many of my videos, I've been pretty hard on Ford when it screws up something.
